OBJECTIVE: Additional cleaning techniques and devices are required to remove maximum amount of residual filling material, which might limit disinfection of root canal system during retreatment. This study aimed to compare fracture resistance of roots when self-adjusting file (SAF), photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS), passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), erbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Er:YAG), or neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) lasers are applied following the use of retreatment files in endodontics...

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of four final irrigation protocols on the reduction of hard-tissue debris accumulated within the mesial root canal system of mandibular first molars using micro-CT analysis. METHODOLOGY: Forty mesial roots of mandibular molars with a single and continuous isthmus connecting the mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals (Vertucci's Type I configuration) were selected and scanned at a resolution of 8.6 μm. Canals were enlarged sequentially using WaveOne Small and Primary instruments activated in reciprocating motion without intracanal irrigation to allow debris to accumulate within the mesial root canal system...

This study evaluated the efficacy of the Self-Adjusting File (SAF) in removing the root filling remnants and smear layer left in oval shaped root canals after using R-Endo retreatment files, by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Forty eight maxillary premolars were prepared and the SAF was used in all of the teeth to remove debris and smear layer. Sixteen teeth were used as control and the other 32 teeth were obturated and randomly assigned to two groups according to the retreatment procedures: R-Endo retreatment files and R-Endo retreatment files+SAF...

In order to study the effects of body sizes and masses of organs and tissues on internal dose assessment, the values corresponding to effective dose coefficients for intakes of radionuclides were calculated using the specific absorbed fractions (SAFs) of two phantoms: the average adult Japanese male phantom (JM-103) and the reference computational phantom-adult male (RCP-AM) of the International Commission on Radiological Protection. SAFs were evaluated using the phantoms and Monte Carlo radiation transport code MCNPX or were taken from published data...

In order to clarify the effects of posture on absorbed doses in organs due to internal exposures, specific absorbed fractions (SAFs) for monoenergetic photons from 0.01 to 4 MeV were calculated using two Japanese adult male phantoms, JM2 (upright) and JM (supine), whose designs were based on CT images of two postures obtained from the same person. Differences in the SAFs of JM2 and JM are within a factor of 2 in most cases although significant differences in SAFs exist in several combinations of source and target organs for low energy photons...

A Japanese voxel phantom in upright posture, JM2, has been developed on the basis of CT images of a healthy Japanese adult male. Body characteristics of JM2 were compared with those of the supine voxel phantom, JM, previously developed using CT images of the same person. Differences were found in the shapes of the spine and lower abdomen and the locations of several organs such as kidneys, liver and stomach between the two phantoms. Specific absorbed fractions (SAFs) for 24 target and 11 sources organs were calculated for monoenergetic photon ranging from 0...
