An 84-year-old gentleman underwent uneventful femtolaser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS) with an arcuate keratotomy (AK) in the left eye. On the 18th post-operative day, a corneal infiltrate developed involving the AK. Staphylococcus epidermidis was the organism isolated on culture. The infiltrate resolved with topical fortified vancomycin and amikacin eyedrops, and the patient regained a visual acuity of 6/6 after 12 weeks. This is the first case from south-east Asia reported in the literature of an infective infiltrate along a femtosecond laser AK...

Intumescent cataract surgery is one of the topical problems of ophthalmology. The article reviews methods of intumescent cataract diagnostics and structural features of swelling lens. Manual or femtolaser-assisted anterior continuous circular capsulorhexis and intumescent cataract phacoemulsification techniques require further research.

BACKGROUND: Capsulorhexis is one of the most important steps in cataract surgery. Good centration, circular overlap in sufficient size and a circular edge without tears result in good centration of the intraocular lens (IOL). In this study, the capsulorhexis results of an experienced surgeon are compared with reported data in femtolaser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS). PATIENTS AND METHODS: 105 consecutive operations were photographically documented; in 81 cases size and overlap were analysed retrospectively...

Hydrogen bonding dynamics has received extensive research attention in recent years due to the significant advances in femtolaser spectroscopy experiments and quantum chemistry calculations. Usually, photoexcitation would cause changes in the hydrogen bonding formed through the interaction between hydrogen donor and acceptor molecules on their ground electronic states, and such transient strengthening or weakening of hydrogen bonding could be crucial for the photophysical transformations and the subsequent photochemical reactions that occurred on a time scale from tens of femtosecond to a few nanoseconds...

Femtosecond lasers represent a new frontier in cataract surgery. Since their introduction and first human treatment in 2008, a lot of new developments have been achieved. In this review article, the physical principle of femtolasers is discussed, together with the indications and side effects of the method in cataract surgery. The most important clinical results are also presented regarding capsulotomy, fragmentation of the crystalline lens, corneal wound creation, and refractive results. Safety issues such as endothelial and macular changes are also discussed...

Introduced in 2008, femtolaser is playing a more and more significant role in cataract surgery. This laser allows to perform three steps of the cataract surgery: the corneal incisions, the capsulotomy, and the lens fragmentation. The prooved advantages of the technique are a better quality of the incisions with a reduced induced astigmatism, a better reliability and reproducibility of the capsulotomy with a better stability of the implanted lens and a reduction of the use of ultrasounds which can negatively affect the cornea...

Having been very successful in corneal surgery, femtolasers were recently introduced into the surgery of crystalline lens. The most important indications and advantages include: perfectly centered and sized capsulotomy, liquefaction of softer lenses and fragmentation of harder lenses which allows for chopping the nucleus without the use of phaco energy. Femtolaser can also be used for creating corneal wounds (tunnels) of any size at any location, and in order to manage the preoperative astigmatism using arcuate incisions at the desired depth within the cornea...
