Lanthanide-containing molecules have many potential applications in material science and biology, that is, luminescent sensing/labling, MRI, magnetic refrigeration, and catalysis among others. Coordination-directed self-assembly has shown great power in the designed construction of well-defined supramolecular systems. However, application of this strategy to the lanthanide edifices is challenging due to the complicated and greatly labile coordination numbers and geometries for lanthanides. Here we demonstrate a sensitive structural switching phenomenon during the stereocontrolled self-assembly of a group of Ln2nL3n (Ln for lanthanides, L for organic ligands, and n = 1, 2, 4) compounds...

The FDA never issued regulations to clarify the boundaries of promotion of pharmacoeconomic data, something it's been dragging its feet on for nearly 20 years. In turn, pharma companies, fearful of being penalized for off-lable promotion, have erred on the side of caution, hesitating to take advantage of Section 114.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Several recent clinical studies revealed an accumulation of ceramide in bronchial epithelial cells of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Degradation of ceramide concentrations in lungs of CF patients employing the functional acid sphingomyelinase inhibitor amitriptyline revealed a benefit in lung function, weight and exacerbation rates. METHODS: To test for a beneficial effect of amitriptyline in vivo, we performed two phase II randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies...

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: This report describes the use of a novel, fully covered, self-expanding metal stent (FCSEMS) for endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided drainage of walled-off pancreatic necrosis (WON). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with WON, as defined by the revised Atlanta Criteria, were included in this open-lable, two-center, observational study. The WON was punctured using a cystotome, and the FCSEMS was inserted under fluoroscopic guidance. Necrosectomy procedures were performed as necessary...

A novel DNA sensor for the detection of the Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli O157:H7) eaeA gene was constructed using surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF). The spacing distance dependence nature of Au@Ag nanorods surface enhanced fluorescence was investigated when the cy3-labled single strand DNA(ssDNA) and the stem-loop DNA probe modified on the nanorods was co-hybridized. The result revealed that the fluorescence intensity reached the maximum value with the spacing distance of about 10nm between cy3 and the Au@Ag nanorods surface...

We present a MoS2 biosensor to electrically detect prostate specific antigen (PSA) in a highly sensitive and label-free manner. Unlike previous MoS2-FET-based biosensors, the device configuration of our biosensors does not require a dielectric layer such as HfO2 due to the hydrophobicity of MoS2. Such an oxide-free operation improves sensitivity and simplifies sensor design. For a quantitative and selective detection of PSA antigen, anti-PSA antibody was immobilized on the sensor surface. Then, introduction of PSA antigen, into the anti-PSA immobilized sensor surface resulted in a lable-free immunoassary format...

BACKGROUND: Several studies have highlighted that volatile anaesthetics improve myocardial protection in cardiopulmonary bypass coronary surgery. However, the haemodynamic effect of desflurane in off-pump coronary surgery has not been clarified yet. Our study hypothesis was that desflurane-fentanyl anaesthesia could decrease myocardial injury markers and improve haemodynamics compared to propofol-fentanyl in patients undergoing off-pump coronary surgery. METHODS: HASH(0x3a0d108) DESIGN: Prospective, randomised open-lable study...

A facile, economical and straightforward hydrothermal strategy is used to prepare highly luminescent nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) by using folic acid as both carbon and nitrogen sources. The as-prepared N-CQDs have an average size of 4.5 ± 1.0 nm and exhibit excitation wavelength-dependent fluorescence with the maximum emission and excitation at 390 and 470 nm, respectively. Furthermore, due to the effective quenching effect of Hg(2+) ions, such N-CQDs are found to serve as an effective fluorescent sensing platform for lable-free sensitive detection of Hg(2+) ions with a detection limit of 0...

BACKGROUND: There is increasing concern about the safety of various psychotropic medications within the scientific community, as evidenced by the number of black-box warnings issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and "Dear Doctor" letters sent by pharmaceutical companies. Health-care providers need to be mindful of the increasing ethical, legal, and financial risks associated with prescribing these medications. METHODS: The English language literature was searched using Medline and the Internet using relevant terms such as "black-box warning," "malpractice," "off-label prescribing," "informed consent," "medications and pregnancy," and with specific medication names, and appropriate articles and information were selected...
