The development of information and communication technologies (ICT) changed many aspects of our lives, including cardiovascular research. This area of research is affected by the availability of open databases that can help conduct basic and applied research. In this study, we summarize the current state of knowledge in publicly available signal databases with seismocardiographic (SCG) signals in January 2023. Based on Google search results for the expression "seismocardiography dataset", we have found and described five databases with seismocardiograms, including three databases that contain SCG signals from healthy subjects, one database with data from porcine subjects, and one signal database with data obtained from human patients with valvular heart disease (VHD)...

Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is an advanced three-dimensional screening modality for the early detection of breast cancer. DBT is able to reduce the problem of tissue overlap in standard two-dimensional mammograms, thus improving the sensitivity and specificity of cancer detection. Although DBT can improve diagnostic accuracy, it leads to higher radiation dose to patients compared to two-dimensional mammography. In this paper, we propose a novel radiation dose reduction technique that introduces multi-scale kernels to our original massive-training artificial neural network (MTANN) to reduce radiation dose substantially, while maintaining high image quality in DBT...

BACKGROUND: mitral regurgitation (mr) is the most common valvular heart disease (vhd) in the elderly and tends to be more prevalent in women. while relevant sex differences in outcomes are evident in surgically treated collectives, there are very limited and conflicting sex-specific data for the growing cohort of patients undergoing transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (teer). OBJECTIVE: to investigate whether sex impacts procedural safety and efficacy, and in-hospital- and long-term outcomes, after teer for mr...

BACKGROUND: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most prevalent type of valvular heart disease (VHD), traditionally diagnosed using echocardiogram or phonocardiogram. Seismocardiogram (SCG), an emerging wearable cardiac monitoring modality, is proved to be feasible in non-invasive and cost-effective AS diagnosis. However, SCG waveforms acquired from patients with heart diseases are typically weak, making them more susceptible to noise contamination. While most related researches focus on motion artifacts, sensor noise and quantization noise have been mostly overlooked...

BACKGROUND: Intro-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is widely used in cardiac surgery patients nowadays. This study aimed to analyze the predictor of short-term survival in cardiac valvular surgery patients with intra-aortic balloon pump implantation. METHODS: This was a retrospective study and a total of 102 cardiac valvular surgery patients who received intra-aortic balloon pump implantation were consecutively included. We retrospectively collected the baseline characteristics and short-term outcomes...

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a common disease affecting up to 1% of the population and at least 50% of patients diagnosed with heart failure (HF) (Hoeper et al. in Lancet Respir Med 4(4):306-322, 2016). It is estimated that PH is present in 15% to 60% of patients with valvular heart disease (VHD) which can result from an increase in pulmonary blood flow and subsequently in pulmonary venous congestion and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). It is important to identify the severity of PH in patients with VHD to appropriately risk stratify and manage these patients (Magne et al...

AIMS: Valvular heart disease (VHD) is one of the leading causes of heart failure. Clinically significant VHD can induce different patterns of cardiac remodelling, and risk stratification is challenging in patients with various degrees of cardiac dysfunction. The study aimed to investigate the prognostic implications of Meta-Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure (MAGGIC) score in patients with VHD. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study used data from the China Valvular Heart Disease (China-VHD) registry, which was a multicentre, prospective, observational cohort study for patients with significant (at least moderate) VHD...

OBJECTIVE: Ruxolitinib was recently approved to treat corticosteroid-resistant acute graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). However, it is unknown as to whether starting ruxolitinib at a lower versus higher acute GvHD grade or earlier versus later affected outcomes. This study identified the impact of starting acute GvHD grade and start time after declaring corticosteroid resistance and the effect on complete and overall response rates to ruxolitinib therapy. METHODS: Retrospective, observational multi-center study...

Pulmonary hypertension secondary to left-sided valvular disease (VHD-PH) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Angiotensin-receptor neprilysin inhibitor (ARNI) is a novel pharmacotherapy, which reduces afterload with natriuresis and peripheral vasodilation. Our cases demonstrate that ARNI may also have a role in the treatment of combined pre- and postcapillary pulmonary hypertension that is independent of its effect on pulmonary capillary wedge pressure and cardiac output. Future prospective trials are needed to evaluate role of ARNIs in treatment of VHD-PH...

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of significant valvular heart disease (VHD) enables appropriate implementation of the best therapeutic strategy and follow-up. Cardiac auscultation remains suboptimal in early detection of VHD. The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) for early detection of VHD and its severity. METHODS: All consecutive patients with VHD who did not have a standard echocardiogram prior to first outpatient cardiology consultation underwent history and physical examination followed by POCUS study by an experienced physician in a general cardiology clinic from June 2017 to August 2022 at our institution...

Valvular heart disease (VHD) is a prevalent cardiac manifestation in antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) patients. However, risk factors and predictors for antiphospholipid antibody-associated VHD (aPL-VHD) remain vague. We aimed to assess the risk of developing aPL-VHD in aPL-positive patients, by establishing a clinical prediction model upon a cross-sectional cohort from APS-Shanghai database, including 383 APS patients and durable aPL carriers with transthoracic echocardiography investigation. The prevalence of aPL-VHD was 11...

Low total cholesterol (TC) levels have been found to significantly increase mortality risk in patients experiencing heart failure. However, it is unclear whether the same relation applies specifically to patients with valvular heart disease (VHD). This study included patients with significant VHD from the China Valvular Heart Disease Study. Patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease were excluded. The primary end point of this study was a combined indicator of either all-cause mortality or rehospitalization because of heart failure (HF)...
