Jawbone reconstruction after tumor resection is one of the most challenging clinical tasks for maxillofacial surgeons. Osteogenic, osteoinductive, osteoconductive and non-antigenic properties of autogenous bone place this bone as the gold standard for solving problems of bone availability. However, the need for a second surgical site to harvest the bone graft increases significantly both the cost and the morbidity associated with the reconstructive procedures. Bone grafting gained an important tool with the discovery of bone morphogenetic proteins in 1960...

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar bone grafting is a vital part of the rehabilitation of cleft patients. The factors that have been most frequently associated with the success of the graft are the age at grafting and the pre-grafting orthodontic treatment. OBJECTIVES: 1) Describe the cases of alveolar bone grafts performed at the Maxilofacial Unit of Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, Barcelona (HSJD); and 2) Analyze the success/failure of alveolar grafts and related variables. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive retrospective study using a sample of 104 patients who underwent a secondary alveolar graft at the Craniofacial Unit of HSJD between 1998 and 2012...

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most common cause of acquired disability and death in children. Retrospective analysis showed 350 children, 128 (36.6%) girls and 222 (63.4%) boys who were hospitalized for injury of neurocranium in a 5 year-period in Dr. Josip Bencević General Hospital in Slavonski Brod. Most of them had both contusion and commotion (46.8%), followed by just contusion of the head (12.5%) and fractures of the skull (10.5%). The haemorrhages and hemathomas were less common (epidural, subdural, SAH) (3...

OBJECTIVE: to describe the dental characteristics of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHODS: a survey in 130 out patients from a Clinic of Maxilofacial Surgery Service, who fulfilled the selection criteria. The social and demographic data were reported in other paper. It was used a questionnaire to identify factors of risk for TMD according to the Research Diagnostic Criteries/Temporomandibular Disorders proposed by Dworkin. It was registered the Angle to molar bilaterally and canine, the presence of canine guides and incisal margin, the dental lost organs and previous surgical removal of third molars...

OBJECTIVE: Platelet-rich concentrate (PRC) is in routine use for orthopaedic and maxilofacial surgery and is frequently combined with bone graft materials to fill bony defects and enhance healing. Numerous studies have been performed investigating the efficacy of PRC to enhance bone healing in which a variety of graft materials have been combined with varying degrees of success. Here, we sought to determine the effect of combining PRC with different graft materials on human bone marrow stromal cell (hBMSC) proliferation, osteoblastic differentiation, and bone formation...

The radicular cysts are result of inflammatory process in the periapical tissues associated with necrotic and infected pulps. Humoral and cellular immune responses play a central role in the pathogenesis of these lesions. The most important role in the growth of these lesion have proinflammatore cytokine TNF-alpha, IL-1 and IL-6. Cytokine can be secreted by macrophages, monocytes and other cells of the immune system and can participate in skeletal homeostasis including osteoclastic formation, and bone resorption in maxillofacial region...

INTRODUCTION: The use of Platelet-rich plasma (platelet gel--PRP--) was introduced in the oral and maxilofacial surgery 10 years ago. Its good results are due to the quickly generation of new bone and the acceleration of the period of surgical scar formation. Its employment in the alveolar reconstruction of the cleft patient is not still consistent and the works published in the literature are infrequent. The objective of this preliminary study is presenting our experience with the use of PRP in the reconstruction of the alveolar congenital defects of cleft patients...

We report a clinical case of a 26 years old female who had a 2 years evolution chin tumour with hypercalcemia (11.8 mg/dl) and PTH (paratohormone) of 761 pg/ml. She underwent a CT scan and MRI of the mandible, as well as a biopsy followed by excision of the tumour by the maxilofacial surgeons. Our ENT Department asked for a Scintigraphy (Tc99s-mibi) and thoracic-cervical CT, which showed a lesion that turned out to be an adenoma of the lower right parathyroid gland after surgery and pathological examination...

Thyroid carcinoma mandibular metastasis are not very frequent and the cases described in literature are few. Due to its bloodstream dissemination, most of them are a consequence of the follicular variant of thyroid carcinomas. A case is presented and a review of the clinicopathologic characteristics of the lesion is made, so the oral and maxilofacial surgeon can recognize it, make a correct differential diagnosis with other mandibular radioluciencies and in consequence, carry out an adequate treatment.

The first ENT Department in Bosnia and Herzegovina was established in Sarajevo by Dr. Zarko Prastalo in 1923, as a part of the Surgery Clinic, with 10 beds. The next year (1924) ENT got its own operation theatre, 30 beds more and a new localization. In that period there was only one ENT specialist, Dr. Zarko Prastalo. Three years after some new doctors started the specialization in ENT. By the year 1946 the ENT Department became a University clinic with 7 doctors on duty, the Clinic became an educational centre...

Surgery for maxilofacial cancer is often radical and disfiguring, and therefore can have an influence on patient's interpersonal relationship and social activities. However, little is known about self-presentation of disfigured patients during rehabilitation. This is an inductive and qualitative study based on 26 extensive interviews. The results demonstrate that patients with disfigurement cope actively with problems in their interpersonal relationship and even go through the empowerment process. Self-presentation of the disfigured patients consisted of four dimensions: (1)self-evaluation: (2)judgment of others' reactions; (3)intention of personal relations and style of self-presentation; and (4) concrete self-presentation using six "strategies"...
