Two types of antimicrobial glass fibers containing ZnO and CaO, with diameters ranging from tens of nanometers to 1 µm, were successfully fabricated by a laser spinning technique. The antimicrobial performance was corroborated according to ISO 20743:2013, by using gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and gram-positive (Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria, and yeast (Candida krusei) (more than 3 logs of reduction). The metabolic activity and endosomal system of eukaryotic cells were not altered by using eluents of CaO glass submicrometric fibers and ZnO fibers at 1 : 10 dilution as cellular media (viability rates over 70%)...

The Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) is a widely used pain measurement tool. There are 2 versions, the BPI Long Form (BPI-LF) and Short Form (BPI-SF), which share 2 core scales measuring pain severity and pain interference but which use different recall periods (24 hours vs. 1 week). To date, the BPI-SF has not been validated for use in Spain. This study investigated the psychometric properties of the BPI-SF Spanish version and compared results on the core scales between BPI-LF and BPI-SF. The data came from a 3-month observational study of 3,029 nononcologic patients managed in Spanish pain units...

In this study, osprey (Pandion haliaetus) tissues collected in France were used for contaminants analyses by a non-invasive approach. 53 pesticides (organochlorine, organophosphate, carbamate, pyrethroids, herbicides, anticoagulant rodenticides), 13 PCBs, and 5 metals (mercury, lead, cadmium, copper and arsenic) were quantified in liver of 14 individual samples. PCBs and mercury were frequent (mean 0.5 mg/kg, range < d.l.-2.6 mg/kg and mean 3.4 mg/kg, range < d.l.-16.3 mg/kg wet weight, respectively)...

Massive hemolysis secondary to sepsis caused by Clostridium perfringens is a rare entity but appears fairly often in the literature. In nearly all published reports, the clinical course is rapid and fatal. We describe the case of a 75-year-old woman with diabetes who was admitted with symptoms consistent with acute cholecystitis. Deteriorating hemodynamics and laboratory findings were consistent with intravascular hemolysis, coagulation disorder, and renal failure. Gram-positive bacilli of the Clostridium species were detected in blood along with worsening indicators of hemolysis...

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum associated with subcutaneous emphysema is a rare, though life-threatening, complication of late pregnancy and labor. We report the case of a primipara who, after undergoing normal labor and delivery of a normal-weight baby, developed pneumomediastinum and extensive subcutaneous emphysema with significant symptoms within minutes of delivery. This peripartum complication is usually self-limiting when the aggravating factors are no louguer present. Management includes strict monitoring of the patient and conservative treatment of symptoms...

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy, effectiveness, technical difficulty, and clinical usefulness of the popliteal sciatic peripheral nerve block for unilateral hallus valgux surgery and to compare the posterior and lateral approaches. We also aimed to investigate patient comfort during the procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, randomized trial enrolled 60 patients scheduled for unilateral hallux valgus surgery. The patients were randomly assigned to groups of 30 patients to receive a nerve block by either a posterior or lateral approach...

Primary healthcare checkups are regularly performed by French healthcare centers. We report analysis of sleep disorders complaint registered from 1988 to 1998 in Bordeaux-Cauderan and Cenon CPAM welfare centers. The prevalence of sleep disorders is estimated from a total of 205 347 checkups. The population is segmented by age (18-24: 19 332, 25-34:46 694, 35-44:51 072, 45-54:46 886, 55-64:32 658, 65 +:7 705), gender (male: 101 801; female: 103 546) and population category (general: 147 188, underprivileged: 22 785, prioritized: 35 374)...

A 66-year-old woman developed hemodynamic instability, oliguria, prostration, fever, and coagulopathy 4 hours after surgery to replace the femoral stem component of a hip prosthesis under a combined subarachnoid-epidural block. Dyspnea and tachypnea developed, and a petechial rash appeared 24 hours later. The diagnosis was fat embolism after other possible causes were ruled out. Supplementary oxygen, fluid replacement therapy, and inotropic support were started. The patient's condition improved and she was discharged from the postoperative recovery unit 5 days after admission...

Methodology for the stereoselective preparation of 3-alkylprolines from N-(9-phenylfluoren-9-yl)-4-oxoproline is presented. The enolate of a N-(9-phenylfluoren-9-yl)-4-oxoproline ester was shown to give stereoselective aldol condensations with aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes. The enolate was preferentially approached by the electrophile through the Re face, and high threo selectivity was also observed and provided a route to trans 3-substituted prolines. The reactions are kinetically controlled except for the case of electron-rich or sterically hindered aromatic aldehydes...

Anesthesia for imaging by nuclear magnetic resonance presents special problems due to the effect of the large magnetic field and high frequency radio waves on monitoring and respiratory systems. These systems in turn affect image quality. Special materials should be designed specifically for this context or existing materials should be modified.
