Carbon/Phenolic Composites (CPCs) are essential to manufacture many portions of the nozzle assembly of Solid Rocket Motors (SRMs) which are essential both to preserve the independent access to space as well as for the homeland security. In our research, a feasible approach aimed at preliminary retrieving the in-plane and out-plane thermal diffusivity of CPCs through the Oxy-Acetylene Torch (OAT) tests was validated. The proposed approach showed to be effective and able to bypass some limitations of common protocols, especially in terms of capability to determine the thermal diffusivity of CPCs at high heating rates...

In this study, the GMAW welding torch was controlled by a stepping motor to achieve a periodic swing. By controlling the swing speed, a micro-variable deposition path was obtained, which was called the micro-control deposition trajectory. The influence of the micro-control deposition trajectory on the arc characteristics, microstructure, and mechanical properties of 304 steel wire arc additive manufacturing was studied. The results showed that the micro-control deposition process was affected by the swing arc and the deposition trajectory and that the arc force was dispersed over the whole deposition layer, which effectively reduced the welding heat input...

PURPOSE: To introduce a tool (TensorFit) for ultrafast and robust metabolite fitting of MRSI data based on Torch's auto-differentiation and optimization framework. METHODS: TensorFit was implemented in Python based on Torch's auto-differentiation to fit individual metabolites in MRS spectra. The underlying time domain and/or frequency domain fitting model is based on a linear combination of metabolite spectroscopic response. The computational time efficiency and accuracy of TensorFit were tested on simulated and in vivo MRS data and compared against TDFDFit and QUEST...

INTRODUCTION: Assessment of the pupillary light reflex (PLR) is key in intensive care monitoring of neurosurgical patients, particularly for monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP). Quantitative pupillometry using a handheld pupillometer is a reliable method for PLR assessment. However, many variables are derived from such devices. We therefore aimed to assess the performance of these variables at monitoring ICP. METHODS: Sedated patients admitted to neurocritical care in a tertiary neurosurgical centre with invasive ICP monitoring were included...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical, angiographic features, and endovascular approach of ruptured and unruptured distal intracranial aneurysms (DIAs). METHODS: From January 2013 to February 2022, details of all consecutive intracranial aneurysms (IAs) treated endovascularly in our center were collected and retrospectively reviewed. IAs involving the anterior cerebral artery, middle cerebral artery, and posterior cerebral artery (distal to anterior communicating artery, limen insula, and P1 segment, respectively), and those distal to superior cerebellar artery, anterior-inferior cerebellar artery, and posterior inferior cerebellar artery's first segment were classified based on their etiology, location, size, and shape...

The balance between a protective and a destructive immune response can be precarious, as exemplified by inborn errors in nucleotide metabolism. This class of inherited disorders, which mimics infection, can result in systemic injury and severe neurologic outcomes. The most common of these disorders is Aicardi Goutières syndrome (AGS). AGS results in a phenotype similar to "TORCH" infections (Toxoplasma gondii, Other [Zika virus (ZIKV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)], Rubella virus, human Cytomegalovirus [HCMV], and Herpesviruses), but with sustained inflammation and ongoing potential for complications...

PURPOSE: Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is a dose-limiting side effect of capecitabine. Celecoxib prevents HFS by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) that is upregulated because of the underlying associated inflammation. However, systemic side effects of celecoxib have limited routine prescription. Topical diclofenac inhibits COX-2 locally with minimal risk of systemic adverse events. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the efficacy of topical diclofenac in the prevention of capecitabine-induced HFS...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV), in addition to other agents, is part of the TORCH complex (Toxoplasma gondii, Rubella virus, Cytomegalovirus, Herpes simplex viruses, and other agents). CMV infection is the most frequent cause of congenital malformations. This study aimed to establish the variation of prevalence of anti-CMV antibodies in pregnant women from the South-West region of Romania, according to demographic factors, such as age and area of residence, in two separate time periods (2013-2016 and 2019-2022). We collected from the hospital records the age, place of residence, and anti-CMV antibody test results using immune electrochemiluminescence and chemiluminescence...

MOTIVATION: Cell-type annotation of single-cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-seq) data is a hallmark of biomedical research and clinical application. Current annotation tools usually assume the simultaneous acquisition of well-annotated data, but without the ability to expand knowledge from new data. Yet, such tools are inconsistent with the continuous emergence of scRNA-seq data, calling for a continuous cell-type annotation model. In addition, by their powerful ability of information integration and model interpretability, transformer-based pre-trained language models have led to breakthroughs in single-cell biology research...

In an effort to reduce the flammability of synthetic polymeric materials such as cotton fabrics and polyurethane foam (PUF), hybrid nanocoatings are prepared by layer-by-layer assembly. Multilayered nanocomposites of a cationic polyelectrolyte, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), are paired with two kinds of clay nanoplatelets, montmorillonite (MMT) and vermiculite (VMT). The physical properties such as thickness and mass and thermal behaviors in clay-based nanocoatings with and without incorporation of tris buffer are compared to assess the effectiveness of amine salts on flame retardant (FR) performances...

BACKGROUND: Risk-based monitoring (RBM) and risk-based quality management (RBQM) offer a compelling approach to increase efficiency, speed and quality in clinical trials by prioritizing and mitigating risks related to essential safety and efficacy data. Since 2013, the FDA and EMA have encouraged the use of RBM/RBQM, however adoption has been slow with limited understanding of the barriers to adoption. METHODS: The Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development conducted an online survey among pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and contract research organizations and gathered 206 responses on 32 distinct RBQM practices...

BACKGROUND: Gene expression may be regulated by the DNA methylation of regulatory elements in cis, distal, and trans regions. One method to evaluate the relationship between DNA methylation and gene expression is the mapping of expression quantitative trait methylation (eQTM) loci (also called expression associated CpG loci, eCpG). However, no open-source tools are available to provide eQTM mapping. In addition, eQTM mapping can involve a large number of comparisons which may prevent the analyses due to limitations of computational resources...

Contemporary gas turbine engines rely on thermal barrier coatings (TBCs), which protect the structural components of the engine against degradation at extremely high operating temperatures (1300-1500 °C). The operational efficiencies of aircraft engines have seen significant improvement in recent years, primarily through the increase in operating temperatures; however, the longevity of TBCs can be potentially impacted by several types of degradation mechanisms. In this comprehensive study, a wide range of novel columnar suspension plasma sprayed (SPS) coatings were developed for their erosion, calcium-magnesium-aluminum-silicate (CMAS), and furnace cycling test (FCT) performance...
