INTRODUCTION: the high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in the modern society brings a high prescription of platelet antiaggregation and anticoagulant medications. These treatments have been related to an increased incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleedings (UGB). Our aim was to estimate the fraction of UGB´s presented to our hospital that was related to this kind of treatments and describe their clinical features in our environment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: a retrospective search was performed in the archives of our hospital of all the patients with diagnosis of UGB admitted during the period 2004-2007 both years inclusive...

UNLABELLED: Weak hyperhomocysteinemia is a risk factor for the development of atherothrombotic vascular complication. Their plasma levels are affected by nutritional and pharmacologic factors, tobacco, certain metabolic state and gender. In HIV+ patients, the wasting syndrome or chronic diarrheas could affect the levels of homocysteine (Hcy), as well as some adverse effects of the new antiretroviral therapies (lipodystrophy syndrome: insulin resistance and/or dislypemia). The levels of Hcy were evaluated in 53 HIV+ patients without any treatment and in 75 HIV+ under treatment with and without metabolic disturbances (n = 43; n = 32, respectively)...

Lopinavir (LPV)/ritonavir (RTV) used in combination, is a potent antiretroviral drug. However, its benefit is limited by its inherent effect on lipid metabolism, causing dislypemia in a large proportion of treated patients. Fasting triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol levels were assessed in 126 HIV-infected patients who initiated salvage therapy based on LPV/RTV. Both TG and cholesterol significantly increased from baseline to month 3. A positive correlation was found between the percentage increase in TG and LPV trough levels (r = 0...

A minor stroke does not cause sufficient alarm in patients to change their lifestyles. 46 patients who suffered strokes in the previous 2 years were contacted by telephone, recording rehabilitation programs, medical therapy and modification of dietary habits. It was discovered that only 50% of those requiring motor rehabilitation actually received such treatment; and only one of twenty carried on speech exercises. Subsequent ischemic events were reported by 22 patients: 12 of whom had strokes, 8 ischemic myocardial attacks and two patients suffered both conditions...
