There are several steps involved when performing high-level disinfection (HLD) of semicritical devices. The recently updated AORN "Guideline for manual high-level disinfection" provides perioperative nurses with evidence-based best practices for performing safe and effective HLD of reusable semicritical items. The guideline also addresses preventing injury to patients and health care workers associated with the handling of high-level disinfectants. This article provides an overview of the guideline and discusses recommendations for selection of a processing method, sterile processing areas, preparation of items for HLD, preparation of high-level disinfectants, manual HLD, drying and storage of items after HLD, and processing records...

Governmental COVID-19 mandates in Ontario, Canada, resulted in a backlog of perioperative procedures. Organization leaders were required to expand services after the pandemic; however, the ongoing nursing shortage and college-based structure of perioperative education programs complicated their response. In 2021, we developed an in-house perioperative education program using a blended-learning theory comprising online modules and videos, skills laboratory sessions, and clinical placement experiences. Nurses were required to apply for the program and remain employed at the facility for two years...

BACKGROUND: Robotically assisted cardiac surgery is performed in a team setting and is well known to be associated with learning curves. Surgeon and operative team learning curves are distinct entities, with total operative time representing the entire operative team (surgery, anesthesia, nursing, and perfusion) and cross-clamp time representing mainly the surgical team. Little is known about how a team learning curve evolves when an experienced surgeon transitions from one surgical center to another...

INTRODUCTION: Surgical services are an essential part of a functional healthcare system, but the Lancet Commission of Global Surgery (LCoGS) indicators of surgical capacity such as perioperative workforce and surgical volume are unknown in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). We aimed to determine the surgical capacity and its associated factors within the DRC. METHODS: Hospitals were assessed in the North Kivu province of the DRC...

BACKGROUND: Moral distress is a multifactorial and complex phenomenon influenced by various individual, cultural, and systemic factors. This study aimed to investigate the frequency and intensity of nurses' moral distress, explore their experiences, and develop the conceptual model of risk factors of moral distress in surgical units and operating rooms. METHOD: This is a sequential mixed-method study conducted at four teaching hospitals affiliated with the Qom University of Medical Sciences...

AIM: This study compared nurses' self-competency assessments and their managers' nurse competence assessments. BACKGROUND: Nurse competence is important for nursing care quality and patient safety. Executive (charge) nurses play a main role in the nurse competency assessment. METHODOLOGY: In this study conducted at a university hospital between January and December 2020, the self-efficacy evaluations of nurses (n = 162) working in services other than the emergency department, operating room, and outpatient clinics of the university hospital were compared with the evaluations of nurse executives (charges) on these nurses (n = 21)...

BACKGROUND: Achieving efficient throughput of patients is a challenge faced by many hospital systems. Factors that can impede efficient throughput include increased ED use, high surgical volumes, lack of available beds, and the complexities of coordinating multiple patient transfers in response to changing care needs. Traditionally, many hospital inpatient units operate via a fixed acuity model, relying on multiple intrahospital transfers to move patients along the care continuum. In contrast, the acuity-adaptable model allows care to occur in the same room despite fluctuations in clinical condition, removing the need for transfer...

BACKGROUND: Coding for gerunds is useful in developing theory in grounded theory. However, it can be confusing for the novice researcher to recognise these words, which consider actions more abstractly. AIM: To explain how to identify, analyse and code gerunds, using the example of a constructivist grounded theory study investigating the design of operating rooms. DISCUSSION: Coding for gerunds helped to illustrate participants' actions and sequences in the example study and added depth to the researcher's understanding of certain topics...

PURPOSE: The difficult airway cart is essential for difficult airway management. Recognition of the importance of human factors in critical scenarios promoted the evolution of the difficult airway cart. Limitation to essential equipment, a structured layout, and proper labelling should be observed. We sought to redesign the difficult airway cart accordingly and analyze how perioperative professionals reacted to it. METHODS: We conducted a two-phase prospective qualitative improvement project involving a multidisciplinary team...

INTRODUCTION: The occupational infectious risk in the health care environment is potentially ubiquitous. Several infectious agents are transmitted to healthcare professionals, especially by blood and body fluids. AIM: To describe the knowledge; attitudes and practices related to blood exposure accidents (BEA) among operating room nurses and to determine their associated factors. METHODS: A descriptive correlational study was conducted from February 24 to April 10, 2022, among nurses of the operating rooms in the two university hospitals of Sousse using an auto administrated questionnaire inspired from the literature...
