Clinical use of camptothecin (CPT) is hindered due to its poor water and oil solubility, active lactone ring instability and non-targeted toxicity. Recently we reported formulation of camptothecin microemulsions with increased solubility for the improved treatment of breast cancer. In this research chitosan stabilized camptothecin nanoemulsions (CHI-CPT-NEs) were formulated improve the cancer targeting efficiency of CPT. The developed NEs were characterized for their droplet size distribution, stability in plasma and evaluated for in-vitro drug release, in-vivo targeting potential, in-vitro hemolytic potential, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity and in-vivo biodistribution...

DNA methylation is a major epigenetic mark with important roles in genetic regulation. Methylated cytosines are found primarily at CpG dinucleotides, but are also found at non-CpG sites (CpA, CpT, and CpC). The general functions of CpG and non-CpG methylation include gene silencing or activation depending on the methylated regions. CpG and non-CpG methylation are found throughout the whole genome, including repetitive sequences, enhancers, promoters, and gene bodies. Interestingly, however, non-CpG methylation is restricted to specific cell types, such as pluripotent stem cells, oocytes, neurons, and glial cells...

Hepatic steatosis is frequently observed in obese and aged individuals. Because hepatic steatosis is closely associated with metabolic syndromes, including insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and inflammation, numerous efforts have been made to develop compounds that ameliorate it. Here, a novel peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) α agonist, 4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)benzene-1,3-diol (MHY553) was developed, and investigated its beneficial effects on hepatic steatosis using young and old Sprague-Dawley rats and HepG2 cells...

BACKGROUND: Access to health care services is a critical component of health care reform and may differ among patients with different types of insurance. Hypothesis/Purpose: The purpose was to compare adolescents with private and public insurance undergoing surgery for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and/or meniscal tears. We hypothesized that patients with public insurance would have a delayed presentation from the time of injury and therefore would have a higher incidence of chondral injuries and irreparable meniscal tears and lower preoperative International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores than patients with private insurance...

The early-onset form of carnitine palmitoyltransferase (CPT) II deficiency has severe outcomes; patients typically die during the newborn period. We report a case of neonatal-onset CPT II deficiency with prolonged survival, exceeding 24 months. The patient was successfully treated by continuous hemodialysis (CHD), which enabled her to overcome repeated crises. We suggest that early intensive treatment, including CHD, is a key for prolonged survival in patients with neonatal-onset CPT II deficiency.

This study introduces activated carbon (AC) as an effective anode for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) using real industrial wastewater without treatment or addition of external microorganism mediators. Inexpensive activated carbon is introduced as a proper electrode alternative to carbon cloth and carbon paper materials, which are considered too expensive for the large-scale application of MFCs. AC has a porous interconnected structure with a high bio-available surface area. The large surface area, in addition to the high macro porosity, facilitates the high performance by reducing electron transfer resistance...

Magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate as a hepatoprotective agent possesses immune modulation and anti-inflammation, and treats liver diseases. But its effects on immunological-inflammatory and metabolic profiles for metabolic syndrome with liver injury and underlying potential mechanisms are not fully understood. In this study, magnesium isoglycyrrhizinate alleviated liver inflammation and lipid accumulation in fructose-fed rats with metabolic syndrome. It also suppressed hepatic inflammatory signaling activation by reducing protein levels of phosphorylation of nuclear factor-kappa B p65 (p-NF-κB p65), inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase α/β (p-IKKα/β) and inhibitor of NF-κB α (p-IκBα) as well as nucleotide-binding domain (NOD)-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein (ASC) and Caspase-1 in rats, being consistent with its reduction of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and IL-6 levels...

Inspiratory muscle metaboreflex activation increases mean arterial pressure (MAP) and limb vascular resistance (LVR) and decreases limb blood flow (Q̇L). Cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibition has been found to attenuate limb skeletal muscle metaboreflex-induced increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity. We hypothesized that compared to placebo (PLA), COX inhibition would attenuate inspiratory muscle metaboreflex-induced 1) increases in MAP and LVR and 2) decreases in Q̇L Seven men (22±1 years) were recruited and orally consumed ibuprofen (IB, 10mg/kg) or PLA 90 min prior to performing the cold pressor test (CPT) for 2 min and inspiratory resistive breathing task (IRBT) for 14...

Carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (CPT-2) deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder of fatty acid oxidation, can be detected by newborn screening using tandem mass spectrometry (TMS). Our case was a boy born at 38 weeks and 6 days of gestation via normal vaginal delivery; his elder sister was affected with CPT-2 deficiency. Acylcarnitine (AC) was analyzed in both dried blood spots (DBS) and serum 2 h after birth to determine whether the boy was also affected. His C16 and C18:1 AC levels in DBS were in the normal range, while his serum long-chain AC levels were marginally increased but lower than those of his sister...
