Investigating individual differences in cognition requires addressing questions not often thought about in standard experimental designs, especially regarding the psychometric properties of the task. Using the AX-CPT cognitive control task as a case study example, we address four concerns that one may encounter when researching the topic of individual differences in cognition. First, we demonstrate the importance of variability in task scores, which in turn directly impacts reliability, particularly when comparing correlations in different populations...

Fluorination is a well-known strategy for improving the bioavailability of bioactive molecules in the lead optimization phase of drug discovery projects. In an attempt to improve the antitumor activity of camptothecins (CPTs), novel 10-fluoro-CPT derivatives were designed, synthesized and evaluated for cytotoxicity against five human cancer cell lines (A-549, MDA-MB-231, KB, KB-VIN and MCF-7). All of the derivatives showed more potent in vitro cytotoxic activity than the clinical CPT-derived drug irinotecan against the tumor cell lines tested, and most of them showed comparable or superior potency to topotecan...

BACKGROUND: Given the potential of Cotrimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT) to prevent bacterial and malarial infections in HIV exposed, uninfected (HEU) infants, it is important to evaluate the effects of its concurrent use with ARV agents that have overlapping toxicity profiles. METHODS: We used data from the Breastfeeding, Antiretrovirals and Nutrition-BAN study (2004-2010) to evaluate the association of CPT and ARV with hematologic measures (hemoglobin, neutrophil, and alanine aminotransferase levels) from 6 to 48 weeks of age in 2,006 HEU infants in Lilongwe, Malawi...

In addition to increasing sympathetic nervous activity, blood pressure, and cerebral blood flow (CBF), the cold pressor test (CPT) stimulates pain receptors, which may increase ventilation above metabolic demand; this response likely reduces the partial pressure of end-tidal carbon dioxide (PET CO2 ), and will attenuate elevations in CBF. We hypothesized: (1) CPT would elicit hyperventilation, effectively lowering PET CO2 ; (2) the CBF response will be elevated during an isocapnic (controlled PET CO2 ), compared to a poikilocapnic CPT (uncontrolled PET CO2 ); (3) In response to CPT, the common carotid artery (CCA) will vasodilatate, while the internal carotid artery (ICA) will remain unchanged to help regulate CBF...

BACKGROUND: Esmolol may attenuate the sympathetic response to pain and reduce postoperative opioid consumption. It is not clear whether esmolol has an analgesic effect per se. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic effect of esmolol in the absence of anaesthetics and opioids. We tested the hypothesis that esmolol would reduce the maximum pain intensity perceived during the cold pressor test (CPT) by 2 points on a 0 to 10 numeric pain rating scale (NRS) compared to placebo...

"All-in-one" carrier-free-based nano-multi-drug self-delivery system could combine triple advantages of small molecules, nanoscale characteristics, and synergistic combination therapy together. Researches have showed that dual-acting small molecular methotrexate (MTX) could target and kill the folate receptors-overexpressing cancer cells. Inspired by this mechanism, a novel collaborative "early-phase tumor-selective targeting and late-phase synergistic anticancer" approach was developed for the self-assembly of chemotherapeutic drug-drug conjugate, which showed various advantages of more simplicity, efficiency, and flexibility over the conventional approach that was only based on single or combination cancer chemotherapy...

We have developed aqueous clay suspensions stabilized by alginate fluid gels (AFG) for coal spontaneous combustion prevention and control. Specially, this study aimed to characterize the effect of AFG on the microstructure, static and dynamic stability, and coal fire inhibition performances of the prepared AFG-stabilized clay suspensions. Compared with aqueous clay suspensions, the AFG-stabilized clay suspensions manifest high static and dynamic stability, which can be ascribed to the formation of a robust three-dimensional gel network by AFG...

The major structural aberrations of DNA induced by a cis-diammineplatinum (II) 1,2-d(GG) intrastrand cross-link (CPT) have been known for decades. To gain deeper insights into the structural dynamics of the sequence-dependent DNA distortions adjacent to the CPT adduct, we employed molecular modeling and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The structural dynamics of native (N-DNA) and cisPt 1,2-d(GG) crosslinked (CPT-DNA) in the form of symmetric 36 nt d(G2T15G*G*T15G2)●C2A15CCA15C2) oligonucleotide duplexes is compared...

Exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) during fetal development may be associated with deficits in attention and impulse control. However, studies examining postnatal PBDE exposures and inattention and impulsivity have been inconsistent. Using data from 214 children in the Health Outcomes and Measures of the Environment (HOME) Study, a prospective pregnancy and birth cohort with enrollment from 2003 to 2006 in the Greater Cincinnati Area, we investigated the relationship of both prenatal and postnatal PBDE exposures with attention and impulse control...

Fluorinated graphene (FG) possess distinctively novel properties different from graphene and is suitable for many biomedical applications. However, the hydrophobic nature and inert property of FG are limiting its further application as biological materials. Here we show the preparation of nanosized FG (60 nm) that exhibits high NIR absorbance for photothermal therapy. In order to make it stable in physiological solutions, FG is enriched with oxygen and followed by covalent binding with chitosan as a novel pH-responsive nanocarrier...

The combination of camptothecin (CPT) and fluoropyrimidine derivatives acts synergistically at a 1:1 molar ratio. Practically, the greatest challenge is the development of a single liposomal formulation that can both encapsulate and maintain this drug combination at an exact 1:1 ratio to achieve coordinated pharmacokinetics. Consequently, a new type of liposome-like nanocapsule (NC) is developed from a highly symmetric Janus camptothecin-floxuridine conjugate (JCFC) amphiphile, which is synthesized by coupling two hydrophobic CPT molecules and two hydrophilic floxuridine (FUDR) molecules to multivalent pentaerythritol via a hydrolyzable ester linkage...

Camptothecin (CPT) is an anti-cancer drug that effectively treats various cancers, including colon cancer. However, poor solubility and other drawbacks have restricted its chemotherapeutic potential. To overcome these restrictions, CPT was encapsulated in CEF (cyclodextrin-EDTA-FE3O4), a composite nanoparticle of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4), and β-cyclodextrin was cross-linked with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). This formulation improved CPT's solubility and bioavailability for cancer cells. The use of magnetically responsive anti-cancer formulation is highly advantageous in cancer chemotherapy...

ObjectivesAs high health care costs are increasing scrutinized, a movement toward reducing patient hospital admissions and lengths of stay has emerged, particularly for operations that may be performed safely in the outpatient setting. Our aim is to describe recent temporal trends in the proportion of dialysis access procedures performed on an inpatient vs. outpatient basis, and to determine the effects of these changes on perioperative morbidity and mortality. MethodsThe 2005-2008 ACS NSQIP database was queried for all primary arteriovenous fistula (AVF) procedures using CPT codes...

BACKGROUND: We retrospectively investigated serum lactate concentration (sLac) during liver resection with the intermittent hepatic hilum clamping (i.e. Pringle maneuver, PM). METHODS: We enrolled 133 patients who underwent liver resection. We analyzed the sLac peri-operatively. We searched for any correlation between the PM and lactatemia and its variations (i.e. lactate clearance, cLac) and other factors which it might be related to. We recorded lactatemia in triplicate intraoperatively, just after the awakening, and 1h and 2hs later...

Purpureocillium lilacinum is a filamentous, hyaline fungus considered an emerging pathogen in humans. The aim of our study was to evaluate the outcome of hyalohyphomycosis in C57BL/6 murine models inoculated with two clinical P. lilacinum isolates (S1 and S2). Each isolate was inoculated in mice randomly distributed in immunocompetent (CPT) and immunosuppressed (SPS) groups. Mice were evaluated at day 7, 21, and 45 after inoculation for histopathological analysis, recovery of fungal cells, and immunological studies...

The American Psychological Association (APA) Practice Guidelines for the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) concluded that there was strong evidence for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), cognitive therapy (CT), and exposure therapy yet weak evidence for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). This is despite the findings from an associated systematic review which concluded that EMDR leads to loss of PTSD diagnosis and symptom reduction. Depression symptoms were also found to improve more with EMDR than control conditions...

The tumor accumulation of micelles is essential to enhance the cellular uptake and extend the release of chemotherapeutic agents. In the previous study camptothecin (CPT)-conjugated micelles (MCPT) were constructed with disulfide linkages and folate moieties for reduction-sensitive release and cell-selective uptake. This study proposes a strategy to integrate the promicelle polymers (PMCPT) into fiber fragments for intratumoral injection, realizing acid-liable release of PMCPT in response to acidic tumor microenvironment and spontaneous self-assembly into MCPT...
