BACKGROUND: Vel is a high frequency blood group antigen and its alloantibody is involved in haemolytic transfusion reactions. After elucidation of the molecular basis of the Vel-negative phenotype defined by a 17-base pair deletion in SMIM1, genotyping has been the technique of choice to identify the Vel-negative phenotype, and molecular investigations have contributed to explain Vel expression variability. The present study was aimed at screening for Vel negative blood donors and characterising the genetic changes found in Brazilian donors with altered Vel expression...

A series of ruthenium compounds containing a pyrrole-ketone bidentate ligand, 2-(2'-methoxybenzoyl)pyrrole (1), have been synthesized and characterized. Reacting 1 with [(η⁶-cymene)RuCl₂]₂ and RuHCl(CO)(PPh₃)₃ generated Ru(η⁶-cymene)[C₄H₃N-2-(CO-C₆H₄-2-OMe)]Cl (2) and {RuCl(CO)(PPh₃)₂[C₄H₃N-2-(COC₆H₄-2-OMe)]} (3), respectively, in moderate yields. Successively reacting 2 with sodium cyanate and sodium azide gave {Ru(η⁶-cymene)[C₄H₃N-2-(CO-C₆H₄-2-OMe)]X} (4, X=OCN; 5, X=N₃) with the elimination of sodium chloride...

Reactions of ammonia or ammonium sulfate (AS) with carbonyls in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) produced from limonene are known to form brown carbon (BrC) with a distinctive absorption band at 505 nm. This study examined the browning processes in aqueous solutions of AS and 4-oxopentanal (4-OPA), which has a 1,4-dicarbonyl structural motif present in many limonene SOA compounds. Aqueous reactions of 4-OPA with AS were found to produce 2-methyl pyrrole (2-MP), which was detected by gas chromatography. While 2-MP does not absorb visible radiation, it can further react with 4-OPA eventually forming BrC compounds...

A novel dynamic method for the investigation of the phenols activity in early stage oxidation of edible oils based on the formation of α-tocopheryl radicals initiated by oil-soluble vanadium complexes is developed. Two new vanadium complexes in oxidation states V and IV were synthesized by reacting 2,2'-((2-hydroxyoctadecyl)azanediyl)bis(ethan-1-ol) (C18DEA) with [VO(acac)2] and 1-(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)octadecan-2-ol (C18DPA) with VOCl2. Addition of a solution of either complex in edible oils resulted in the formation of α-tocopheryl radical, which was monitored by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy...

The in situ generated o-alkynylthioureas obtain by reacting 2-(phenylethynyl)anilines and aryl isothiocynates undergo efficient cascade cyclization in the presence of Ag2CO3 to form indoloquinolines under microwave heating. The present tandem process allows the generation of a variety of indolo[2,3-b]quinolines derivatives in good to moderate yields with a wide functional group tolerance.

Sulfonate-containing hydrogels are of particular interest because of their tunable mechanical and swelling properties, as well as their biological effects. Polysulfonate copolymers were synthesized by reacting 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), acrylamide (AM), and acrylic acid (AA). We found that the incorporation rate of sulfonate-containing monomer and the molecular weight of the copolymer were significantly enhanced by increasing the ionic strength of the solution. We introduced thiol groups by modifying the pendant carboxylates or copolymerizing along with a disulfide-containing monomer...

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether there is a difference in frequency and clinical relevance of incidental findings detected by total-body computed tomography scanning (TBCT) compared to those by the standard work-up (STWU) with selective computed tomography (CT) scanning. METHODS: Trauma patients from five trauma centres were randomized between April 2011 and January 2014 to TBCT imaging or STWU consisting of conventional imaging with selective CT scanning. Incidental findings were divided into three categories: 1) major finding, may cause mortality; 2) moderate finding, may cause morbidity; and 3) minor finding, hardly relevant...

Efficient ruthenium-, rhodium-, palladium-, copper- and iridium-catalysed methodologies have been recently developed for the synthesis of quinolines by the reaction of 2-aminobenzyl alcohols with carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) or the related alcohols. The reaction is assumed to proceed via a sequence involving initial metal-catalysed oxidation of 2-aminobenzyl alcohols to the related 2-aminobenzaldehydes, followed by cross aldol reaction with a carbonyl compound under basic conditions to afford α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds...

The secondary amines found in b-PIBSI dispersants prepared by attaching two polyisobutylene chains to a polyamine core via two succinimide moieties were reacted with ethylene carbonate (EC). The reaction generated urethane bonds on the polyamine core to yield the modified b-PIBSI dispersants (Mb-PIBSI). Five dispersants were prepared by reacting 2 molar equivalent (meq) of polyisobutylene terminated at one end with a succinic anhydride moiety (PIBSA) with 1 meq of hexamethylenediamine (HMDA), diethylenetriamine (DETA), triethylenetetramine (TETA), tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), and pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) to yield the corresponding b-PIBSI dispersants...

Olive Pomace was firstly dried, then pomace olive oil was extracted, and the obtained oil was hydrolyzed to produce glycerol and mixture of fatty acids. Fatty acids mixture was separated, this mixture was then cooled, where the all saturated fatty acids were solidified, and then they were filtered off. These saturated fatty acids were identified by GC mass after esterification, and were identified as stearic, palmitic and myristic acids. Stearic acid was extracted using supercritical CO2 extractor. The stearic acid was confirmed by means of GC mass after its esterification, and it was used as starting material for preparation of a variety of heterocyclic compounds, which were then tested for their antimicrobial activities...

The ability to accurately measure and report trace amounts of residual formaldehyde impurity in a vaccine product is not only critical in the product release but also a regulatory requirement. In many bacterial or viral vaccine manufacturing procedures, formaldehyde is used either at a live culture inactivation step or at a protein de-toxification step or at both. Reported here is a validated and improved C18-UPLC method (developed based on previously published C-8 HPLC method) to determine the traces of formaldehyde process impurity in a liquid form Neisseria meningitidis A/C/Y/W-135-DT conjugate vaccine formulated in isotonic aqueous 1× PBS...

In this study, a novel simple method was developed to prepare functional hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels simultaneously containing hydrazone and disulfide bonds in their crossbridges. The HA hydrogels were formed by directly reacting 2,5-hexanedione and 3,3'-dithiodipropionate hydrazide-modified HA, and were characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA and mechanical tests. The results showed that the formation of HA hydrogels was a result of the reaction between ketone and hydrazide groups. The resultant HA hydrogels exhibited a porous morphology with a pore size range of 50 μm to 400 μm, and their compressive modulus and G″/G' ratio were 18...

Dibenzo[b,h][1,6]naphthyridines were synthesized in one pot by reacting 2-acetylaminobenzaldehyde with methyl ketones under basic conditions via four sequential condensation reactions. This method was also applied to the synthesis of 1,2-dihydroquinolines. 6-Methyl-1,6-dibenzonaphthyridinium triflates showed strong fluorescence, and the fluorescence intensities were changed upon intercalation into double-stranded DNA.
