The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the fabrication method of dental prosthesis on the mechanical properties. Casting was produced using the lost wax casting method, and milling was designed using a CAD/CAM program. The 3D printing method used the SLS technique to create a three-dimensional structure by sintering metal powder with a laser. When making the specimen, the specimen was oriented at 0, 30, 60, and 90 degrees. All test specimens complied with the requirements of the international standard ISO 22674 for dental alloys...

BACKGROUND: Neurotraumas or neurodegenerative diseases often result in proprioceptive deficits, which makes it challenging for the nervous system to adapt to the compromised sensorimotor conditions. Also, in human machine interactions, such as prosthesis control and teleoperation, proprioceptive mismatch limits accuracy and intuitiveness of controlling active joints in robotic agents. To address these proprioceptive deficits, several invasive and non-invasive approaches like vibration, electrical nerve stimulation, and skin stretch have been introduced...

BACKGROUND: Hamstring autografts are commonly used for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Different folding techniques exist in tripling the semitendinosus. Few anatomical studies exist in evaluating their viscoelastic properties. The purpose of this study was to characterize and compare the viscoelastic and failure properties of two hamstring graft configurations, the "Z" construct and "2" construct. METHODS: Ten matched pairs of fresh-frozen cadaveric semitendinosus hamstring grafts were used to create the "2" configuration or "Z" configuration...

PURPOSE: To mechanically characterize and assess the biological properties of Ti6Al4V surfaces obtained by Selective Laser Melting in order to determine whether this process is conceivable for production of implant-supported prostheses and particularly trans-gingival components. As-built and polished surfaces were studied in comparison with components obtained by computer numerical control machining technology in order to consider whether the properties are in the same range as the conventional method currently used...

Abnormal connections between the esophagus and low respiratory tract can result from embryological defects in foregut development. Beyond well-known malformations, including tracheo-esophageal fistula and laryngo-tracheo-esophageal cleft, rarer anomalies have also been reported, including communicating bronchopulmonary foregut malformations and tracheal atresia. Herein, we describe a case of what we have called "esophageal trachea," which, to our knowledge, has yet to be reported. A full-term neonate was born in our institution presenting with a foregut malformation involving both the middle esophagus and the distal trachea, which were found to be longitudinally merged into a common segment, 3 cm in length, located just above the carina and consisted of esophageal tissue without cartilaginous rings...

Selective laser sintering (SLS) is being developed for dental applications. This study aimed to investigate the properties of Ti-6Al-4V and pure titanium specimens fabricated using the SLS process and compare them with casting specimens. Besides, the effect of the building direction on the properties of the SLS specimens was also investigated. Specimens were prepared by SLS using Ti-6Al-4V powder or pure titanium powder. Casting specimens were also prepared using Ti-6Al-4V alloys and pure titanium. The mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation), physical properties (surface roughness, contact angle, and Vickers hardness); corrosion resistors (color difference and corrosion), and surface properties (chemical composition and surface observation) were examined...

BACKGROUND: Optimizing stimulation protocol is essential for clinical application of retinal prosthesis. Elongating stimulation pulse width (~25ms /phase) has been proposed as an effective method to improve spatial resolution of epi-retinal implants. However, it is unknown whether longer stimulus pulse width will increase the risk of damaging the retina. In addition, with the advent of next generation retinal prosthesis featuring high-density microelectrode array, it is tempting to optimizing a single set of parameters for all electrodes instead of optimizing parameters of each electrode, but this approach raised biosafety concern...

RATIONALE: Erectile dysfunction (ED) and Peyronie's disease (PD) are conditions commonly observed in andrology. Despite the surgical refinement and the technical improvement in this field, even in expert hands, detrimental consequences have been reported and it can be related to patient's comorbidities or misconduct in the postoperative period. In this article we report anecdotal cases of severe complications following penile surgery for ED and PD in high volume centers, describe the strategies adopted to treat it and discuss the options that would have helped preventing these events...

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of proximal humerus fractures is a therapeutic challenge in the elderly as the functional demands of these patients are high. We postulated that there may be a relationship between functional results and deltoid tension when these fractures are treated with a reverse prosthesis. This study was performed to determine the optimal tension of the deltoid. The primary outcome was the constant score in relation to humeral length at the final follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our retrospective cohort consisted of 45 patients treated with a reverse fracture prosthesis during the period from January 2010 to July 2017...

Compared to rigid actuators, series elastic actuators (SEAs) offer a potential reduction of motor energy consumption and peak power, though these benefits are highly dependent on the design of the torque-elongation profile of the elastic element. In the case of linear springs, natural dynamics is a traditional method for this design, but it has two major limitations-arbitrary load trajectories are difficult or impossible to analyze and it does not consider actuator constraints. Parametric optimization is also a popular design method that addresses these limitations, but solutions are only optimal within the space of the parameters...

Pseudocoarctation of the aorta is an uncommon congenital entity characterized by juxtaductal elongation and tortuosity of the aortic arch. It is known to be associated with aneurysm formation. Our patient is a 7.7-month-female infant followed prenatally by magnetic resonance imaging that detected this anomaly. Subsequently, postnatal preoperative computed tomography angiography was confirmatory. The operation comprised resection of the aneurysmal portion of the aorta and extended end-to-end reconstruction, without prosthesis usage...

INTRODUCTION: Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) is a common condition in elderly resulting from the weakening of the organ suspension elements of multifactorial origin. It compromises significantly the quality of life and can affect more than 50% of multiparous women. Stage IV prolapse or complete uterovaginal eversion corresponds to 10% of the cases and the only form of curative treatment is the surgical correction. The aim of this video is to demonstrate our technique of sacrospinous hysteropexy with a low weight transvaginal polypropylene mesh for treatment of this challenge condition, focusing on technical details in order to prevent mesh related complications...

PURPOSE: Anterior knee pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is often unexplained, spurring ongoing debates on the need for patellar resurfacing. It was hypothesized that a contemporary patella-friendly implant would restore patellofemoral kinematics more physiologically than outdated implants and that there would be no perceived or clinically demonstrable differences due to resurfacing of patella (RP). METHODS: This prospective bilateral randomized study was undertaken in 49 patients scheduled for the same-day bilateral TKAs...

This represents the first systematic study where levan polysaccharide was used to fabricate fibrous matrices by co-axial and single-needle electrospinning techniques. For this, hydrolyzed (hHL) and sulfated hydrolyzed (ShHL) Halomonas levan were chemically synthesized and used together with polycaprolactone (PCL) and polyethyleneoxide (PEO) for the spinning process. In co-axially spun matrices, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) were found to increase with increasing ShHL concentration and elongation at break of PCL + ShHL matrices increased up to ten-fold when compared to PCL matrices...

Many amputees who wear a leg prosthesis develop significant skin wounds on their residual limb. The exact cause of these wounds is unclear as little work has studied the interface between the prosthetic device and user. Using a reflective marker system and a custom clear socket, evaluations were conducted with a clear transparent test socket mounted over a plaster limb model and a deformable limb model...
