BACKGROUND: Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan parasite that is particularly responsible for abortions in cattle and neuromuscular disease in dogs. Due to the limited effectiveness of currently available drugs, there is an urgent need for new therapeutic approaches to control neosporosis. Luciferase-based assays are potentially powerful tools in the search for antiprotozoal compounds, permitting the development of faster and more automated assays. The aim of this study was to construct a luciferase-expressing N...

Cysticercus fasciolaris is a parasitic helminth that usually infects feline and canine mammal hosts. The intermediate hosts (rodents, occasionally lagomorphs, and humans) get infected by the consumption of feed or water contaminated with eggs. Rodents are vectors of disease and reservoirs of various zoonotic parasites. The current survey was aimed at determining endoparasitic helminth infections in rodents in central Morocco. Sampled rodents after specific identification were sacrificed and examined to identify parasitic helminths following ethical guidelines...

BACKGROUND/AIM: 5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) is a natural amino acid and a precursor of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Following light irradiation, the PpIX generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the presence of oxygen. Increased ROS levels can cause apoptotic cell death and necrosis of targeted cancer cells. This study examined whether photodynamic therapy using 5ALA (5-ALA PDT) could be used as a potential adjuvant therapy for bone and soft tissue sarcomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The human osteosarcoma (143B), mouse osteosarcoma (LM8), human fibrosarcoma cell (HT1080) cell lines were used...

Background Congenital/infantile fibrosarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumor presented in early age of life. It should be considered in the differential diagnosis of the large soft tissue masses especially in the extremities at the age of infancy. These tumors frequently are misdiagnosed at birth as hemangioma. Histologically, they can resemble their adult counterparts and they are characterized by the chromosomal translocation t(12;15) (p13;q25) resulting in the ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. Objective A retrospective review of the MRI features of histopathology-proven congenital/infantile fibrosarcoma provides our own institutional experience and supports the limited radiology literature written about this disease...

Sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma is a rare fibrosarcoma variant in which more than half of patients experience local recurrence or metastatic spread. In the current literature, there is limited and nonspecific imaging data, contributing to frequent misdiagnosis and delays in treatment intervention. Given the poor prognosis associated with this malignancy and the high probability of metastases, accurate and prompt diagnoses are critical. In this article, we report the case of a 27-year-old female diagnosed with metastatic sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma following the discovery of a growing palpable mass on her right gluteus maximus muscle...

Solid tumors are characterized by hypoxic areas, which are prone for macrophage infiltration. Once infiltrated, macrophages polarize to tumor associated macrophages (TAM) to support tumor progression. Therefore, the crosstalk between TAMs and tumor cells is of current interest for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. These may comprise induction of an iron- and lipid peroxidation-dependent form of cell death, known as ferroptosis. To study the macrophage - tumor cell crosstalk we polarized primary human macrophages towards a TAM-like phenotype, co-cultured them with HT1080 fibrosarcoma cells, and analyzed the tumor cell response to ferroptosis induction...

In-frame fusions in NTRK genes, with intact kinase domain, have been reported to occur at higher frequencies in rare tumors like infantile fibrosarcoma, congenital mesoblastic nephroma, and secretory carcinoma, whereas they occur at very low frequencies in common malignancies like NSCLC and colon cancers (0.1%-1%). Despite the rare occurrence, these alterations have gained importance owing to approval of drugs like entrectinib and larotrectinib targeting the kinase domain of the gene. More than 50 fusion partners have been described, and only in-frame fusions result in constitutive ligand-independent kinase activity leading to oncogenesis...

INTRODUCTION: Zoledronic acid (ZOL) is a third-generation bisphosphonate with a higher affinity for bone resorption areas than earlier bisphosphonates (i.e., pamidronate, PAM). In human medicine, ZOL provides improved bone pain relief and prolonged time to skeletal-related events compared to its older generational counterparts. Preclinical studies have investigated its role as an anti-neoplastic agent, both independently and synergistically, with radiation therapy (RT). ZOL and RT act synergistically in several neoplastic human cell lines: prostate, breast, osteosarcoma, and fibrosarcoma...
