High-elevation arid regions harbor microbial communities reliant on metabolic niches and flexibility to survive under biologically stressful conditions, including nutrient limitation that necessitates the utilization of atmospheric trace gases as electron donors. Geothermal springs present "oases" of microbial activity, diversity, and abundance by delivering water and substrates, including reduced gases. However, it is unknown whether these springs exhibit a gradient of effects, increasing the spatial reach of their impact on trace gas-oxidizing microbes in the surrounding soils...

This study aims to reveal the effects of maltodextrin(MD) on the water adsorption and thermodynamic properties of Codonopsis Radix(DS) spray-dried powder by determining the moisture and energy changes of the powder in the process of moisture absorption. The static weighing method was used to obtain the isothermal water adsorption data of the spray-dried powder in 6 saturated salt solutions(KAc, MgCl_2·6H_2O, K_2CO_3, NaBr, NaCl, and KCl) at 3 temperatures(25, 35, and 45 ℃). Six models were used for fitting of the water adsorption process, and the most suitable model was selected based on the model performance...

The key innovations of DC-CRF are introducing variable importance evaluation via C value to guide wavelength selection and accelerate convergence; a double-loop structure integrating random frog (RF) leaping and contraction attenuation to dynamically balance convergence speed and efficiency...

Membrane distillation (MD) has emerged as a promising technology for desalination and concentration of hypersaline brine. However, the efficient preparation of a structurally stable and salinity-resistant membrane remains a significant challenge. In this study, an amphiphobic polytetrafluoroethylene nanofibrous membrane (PTFE NFM) with exceptional resistance to scaling has been developed, using an energy-efficient method. This innovative approach avoids the high-temperature sintering treatment, only involving electrospinning with PTFE/PVA emulsion and subsequent low-temperature crosslinking and fluorination...

Pre-rigor and post-rigor muscle were mixed with 0.3% or 3% NaCl (w/w) and made into surimi gels, respectively. Results showed that pre-rigor muscle had a higher content of ATP, longer sarcomere, higher pH and greater protein solubility. Metabolic profile suggested that pre-rigor muscle had higher content (a 28-fold increase) of antioxidants such as butyryl-l-carnitine...

Under salinity conditions, growth and productivity of grain crops decrease, leading to inhibition and limited absorption of water and elements necessary for plant growth, osmotic imbalance, ionic stress, and oxidative stress. Microorganisms in bio-fertilizers have several mechanisms to provide benefits to crop plants and reduce the harmful effect of salinity. They can be effective in dissolving phosphate, fixing nitrogen, promoting plant growth, and can have a combination of all these qualities. During two successful agricultural seasons, two field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of bio-fertilizer applications, including phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB), nitrogen fixation bacteria and a mix of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and nitrogen fixation bacteria with three rates, 50, 75 and 100% NPK, of the recommended dose of minimal fertilizer on agronomic traits, yield and nutrient uptake of barley ( Hordeum vulgare ) under saline condition in Village 13, Farafra Oasis, New Valley Governorate, Egypt...

Estuaries are vulnerable to oceanic and atmospheric climate change. Much of the research investigating climate change impacts on estuaries is focused on saltwater intrusion within surface water due to drought and rising sea levels, with implications for ecosystems and humans. Groundwater and soil near estuaries may also be influenced, as estuary salinity and hydraulic head changes can impact soils and aquifers not previously at risk of salinization. This study was conducted to address knowledge gaps related to present and future groundwater salinity distribution in a groundwater system connected to a macro-tidal estuary that experiences a tidal bore due to its hydraulic connection to the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Canada...
