BACKGROUND: Researchers have long been interested in identifying risk factors for binge drinking behavior (4+/5+ drinks/occasion for females/males), but many studies have demonstrated that a substantial proportion of young adults are drinking at levels far beyond (often 2-3 times) the standard binge threshold (Patrick et al., 2017). The consumption of such large quantities of alcohol, typically referred to as high-intensity drinking (HID), can cause severe alcohol-related problems, such as blackouts, unintended sexual experiences, and even death (Hingson et al...

Objective: Prior studies demonstrate a link between socio-cognitive deficits and alcohol problems in adolescents and young adults. Researchers have proposed that young people with such deficits may misperceive and over-value peers' attitudes about drinking and consider drinking a way to be accepted by their peer group. We test this hypothesis by investigating whether theory of mind (ToM) deficits in underage (18-20-year-old) drinkers are associated with binge drinking and alcohol problems, and whether these ToM deficits have an indirect effect on alcohol outcomes through perceived peer pressure to drink (i...

PURPOSE: Previous research has indicated the beneficial effects of musical training on speech perception in children. However, little has been known about whether musical training exerts transfer effects on fine-grained perception of linguistic pitch and time information. This study aimed to investigate the effects of different musical training programs and training duration on preschoolers' categorical perception (CP) of lexical tones and voice onset time (VOT) in Mandarin Chinese, which utilize pitch and time changes, respectively, to convey phonemic contrasts...

The concept of empowerment in sexual health is widely used in health promotion. This scoping review aims to identify how it is defined and measured. PubMed, Sage Journals, PsycInfo and the Web of Science are data sources. The inclusion criteria for studies were as follows: (1) an analysis of empowerment in sexual health, (2) quantitative evaluation and (3) publication in a peer-reviewed journal in French or English since January 1996. Data were extracted using a summary table of the definitions and indicators of empowerment in sexual health...

BACKGROUND: Deficits in theory of mind (ToM) found in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD) are often thought to result from prolonged heavy alcohol use. However, links between deficits in ToM and greater alcohol problems are often also present in non-clinical samples (e.g., adolescents and young adults) who may not have a similar long-lasting history of alcohol consumption as individuals with AUD. The current study is the first to systematically review and meta-analyze results from studies examining associations between lower ToM and greater alcohol problems in non-clinical samples...

Significant mitral regurgitation (MR) is the most common valvular disease in the United States in patients older than 75. However, many patients with severe MR are at a high risk for surgical repair due to other significant comorbidities. Over the past decade, many transcatheter mitral valve devices have been studied that address the different mechanisms of MR, but only a few have received a Conformité Européene (CE) mark or United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. The Carillon, Cardioband, and Mitralign all received CE marking for percutaneous mitral annuloplasty, while the Tendyne and SAPIEN 3 received a CE mark and FDA approval, respectively, for transcatheter mitral valve replacement...

METHOD: The analysis is based on the reflexive approach applied by the authors during their participation in two public health intervention research (PHIR) projects, in France and in Burkina Faso. RESULTS: In Paris, PHIR aimed to enable sub-Saharan immigrants to appropriate the existing means of prevention and sexual health care and to strengthen their empowerment in view of preserving their health...

Background: The prognostic importance of nutritional indexes has been shown in some diseases. We aimed to examine the prognostic value of these indexes in patients implanted with the Carillon Mitral Contour System (CMCS). Methods: Fifty-four patients who underwent successful CMCS implantation were evaluated. Prognostic nutritional index (PNI), geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) and controlling nutritional status (CONUT) scores were calculated. The relationships between these indexes and 1-year clinical outcomes including all-cause mortality and re-hospitalization due to heart failure were investigated...

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to compare indirect mitral annuloplasty using the Carillon Mitral Contour System and edge-to-edge repair via MitraClip in atrial functional mitral regurgitation (aFMR). BACKGROUND: In patients with left ventricular dilation, both edge-to-edge repair and indirect mitral annuloplasty are effective in reducing mitral regurgitation, while no clinical trial has compared both interventional methods in aFMR. METHODS: In a retrospective single-center analysis, 41 patients with aFMR underwent either edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (MitraClip group, n = 20) or indirect annuloplasty (Carillon group, n = 21)...

Background : Exploring biological variables that may serve as indicators of the development and progression of cognitive decline is currently a high-priority research area. Recent studies have demonstrated that during normal aging, individuals experience increased inflammation throughout the brain and body, which may be linked to cognitive impairment and reduced gray matter volume in the brain. Neurofilament light polypeptide (NfL), which is released into the circulation following neuronal damage, has been proposed as a biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases, and may also have utility in the context of normal aging...

BACKGROUND: Chronic alcohol consumption is associated with structural brain changes and increased inflammatory signaling throughout the brain and body. Increased inflammation in the brain has been associated with structural damage. Recent studies have also shown that neurofilament light polypeptide (NfL) is released into the systemic circulation following neuronal damage. Although NfL has thus been proposed as a biomarker for neurodegenerative diseases, its connection to alcohol use disorder has not been explored...

AIMS: Functional mitral regurgitation (MR) (FMR) is common in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and worsens morbidity and mortality, even when mild. The CARILLON® mitral contour system (Cardiac Dimensions, Kirkland, WA, USA), a mitral annuloplasty device delivered percutaneously to the coronary sinus, is designed to reduce the mitral annular dimension by virtue of the close anatomic relationship between the coronary sinus and the posterior mitral annulus. We performed a comprehensive individual patient data meta-analysis of all studies that used CARILLON® device vs...

BACKGROUND: Sedation/analgesia is a daily challenge faced by intensivists managing patients with brain injury (BI) in intensive care units (ICUs). The optimization of sedation in patients with BI presents particular challenges. A choice must be made between the potential benefit of a rapid clinical evaluation and the potential exacerbation of intracranial hypertension in patients with impaired cerebral compliance. In the ICU, a pragmatic approach to the use of sedation/analgesia, including the optimal titration, management of multiple drugs, and use of any type of brain monitor, is needed...

Objective: The relationship between marijuana and alcohol use among late adolescents was examined as whether marijuana use was related to quantity of alcohol consumed that day, and whether changes in marijuana and alcohol use frequency over 3 years were related. Method: College students ( n = 375) reported marijuana and alcohol use for 28 days over 3 years. Results: Within-day analyses showed that more alcohol was consumed on days on which marijuana was used. Co-use varied by alcohol use problems, day of week, and year in study; the relation between marijuana and alcohol use was stronger among those who reported less problematic alcohol use, on weekdays, and as time increased...

OBJECTIVE: The management of severe functional mitral regurgitation (FMR) in patients with heart failure (HF) and low ejection fraction is controversial, but percutaneous transcatheter procedures are promising.
