BACKGROUND: Being at risk for malnutrition can be observed among hospitalized patients of all medical specialties. There are only few studies in arthroplasty dealing with defining and assessing malnutrition as such a potentially risk. This study aims to identify the risk for malnutrition following primary (pAP) and revision arthroplasty (rAP) (1) using non-invasive interview based assessment tools and to analyze effects on clinical outcome (2) and quality of life (3). METHODS: A consecutive series of hospitalized patients of a Department of Arthroplasty at a Level 1 Trauma Center in Western Europe was observed between June 2014 and June 2016...

Mesonephric adenocarcinoma (MNA) is believed to arise from benign mesonephric remnants or hyperplasia located in the lateral walls of the uterine cervix. They are uncommon in other sites of the gynecologic tract, and exceptionally rare in the uterine corpus. So far, only 30 cases of uterine MNA have been reported in the literature, as a result, the etiology, clinical behavior, choice of treatment, and histogenesis of uterine MNA are still unclear. In this study, we report 2 cases of MNA of uterine corpus. One case involved the inner half of myometrium with endometrial involvement; the second case involved the outer half of myometrium without endometrial involvement...

Cu(0) wire-catalyzed single electron transfer-living radical polymerization (SET-LRP) of (-)-menthyl acrylate, a biobased hydrophobic monomer, was investigated at 25 ºC in ethanol, iso-propanol, ethyl lactate, 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) and 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropanol (TFP). All solvents are known to promote, in the presence of N-ligands, the mechanistically required self-regulated disproportionation of Cu(I)Br into Cu(0) and Cu(II)Br2 . Both fluorinated alcohols brought out their characteristics of universal SET-LRP solvents and showed the proper polarity balance to mediate an efficient polymerization of this bulky and hydrophobic monomer...

The low temperature antiferromagnetic (AF) phase of MnWO4 (the so-called AF1 phase) exhibits different spin-canting configurations at two Mn2+ sublattices of the (3  +  1)-dimensional magnetic structure. The suggested superspace group [Formula: see text] is a significant consequence of the polar space group [Formula: see text]2 true for the nuclear structure of MnWO4 . Density functional theory calculations showed that its ground state prefers this two spin-canting system. The structural difference between two independent atomic sites for Mn (Mna , Mnb ) is too small to allow microscopically detectable electric polarisation...

Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from the co-factor S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) onto the substrate, nicotinamide (NA) to form 1-methyl-nicotinamide (MNA). Higher NNMT expression and MNA concentrations have been associated with obesity and type-2 diabetes. Here we report a small molecule analog of NA, JBSNF-000088, that inhibits NNMT activity, reduces MNA levels and drives insulin sensitization, glucose modulation and body weight reduction in animal models of metabolic disease...

BACKGROUND: Pyruvate improves contractility of normal, hypoxic, and post-ischemic myocardium. However, sodium overload is a major problem with its therapeutic application if sodium pyruvate is used. Development of alternative forms such as N-1-methylnicotinamide (MNA) pyruvate may help to overcome this problem. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of MNA pyruvate in a murine model of cardiac ischemia. METHODS: Seven month old male ApoE-/- LDLr-/- mice that develop myocardial infarction when exposed to hypoxic stress, were used in this study...

Obesity is a major health problem, and although caloric restriction and exercise are successful strategies to lose adipose tissue in obese individuals, a simultaneous decrease in skeletal muscle mass, negatively effects metabolism and muscle function. To deeper understand molecular events occurring in muscle during weight-loss, we measured the expressional change in human skeletal muscle following a combination of severe caloric restriction and exercise over 4 days in 15 Swedish men. Key metabolic genes were regulated after the intervention, indicating a shift from carbohydrate to fat metabolism...
