Parkinson's disease (PD) patients are at a higher risk of malnutrition. The prevalence has been estimated to 0-24%, while 3%-60% of PD patients are reported to be at risk of malnutrition. To date, there is no clear explanation for malnutrition in these patients. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and to analyze factors that influence its appearance. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to determine normal nutritional status; at risk of malnutrition; and already malnourished status...

Large-scale QM/MM calculations were performed to elucidate an optimized geometrical structure of a CaMn4O5 cluster with and without water insertion in the S3 state of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II (PSII). The left (L)-opened structure was found to be stable under the assumption of no hydroxide anion insertion in the S3 state, whereas the right (R)-opened structure became more stable if one water molecule is inserted to the Mn4Ca cluster. The optimized Mna(4)-Mnd(1) distance determined by QM/MM was about 5...

BACKGROUND: Demographic transition in Nepal, like in many developing countries, has resulted in a burgeoning elderly population whose health status is not currently monitored. One pillar of health is adequate nutrition. Yet, little is known about the nutritional health status of the elderly in Nepal. The financial, material, and personnel limitations in Nepal's health delivery services necessitate health screening instruments that require minimal clinical staff and resources. To our knowledge, no such nutritional assessment tool has been validated in Nepal...

Treatment with 1-methylnicotinamide (MNA), a major metabolite of nicotinamide, exerts anti-thrombotic, anti-inflammatory, and vasoprotective effects. Yet, pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of MNA has not been fully characterised. In the present work we analyse the PK profile of the MNA given as a nitrate (MNANO3) in comparison to nitrite (MNANO2) or chloride (MNACl) in rats. The bioavailability of MNA administered as MNANO3 equaled 22.4% as compared to MNANO2 or MNACl (9.2% and 9.1%, respectively). Moreover, in single pass intestinal perfusion experiments effective permeability of MNA given as MNANO3 was higher as compared with MNA administered as MNANO2 or MNACl...

MOTIVATION: Protein complexes are one of the keys to studying the behavior of a cell system. Many biological functions are carried out by protein complexes. During the past decade, the main strategy used to identify protein complexes from high-throughput network data has been to extract near-cliques or highly dense subgraphs from a single protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Although experimental PPI data has increased significantly over recent years, most PPI networks still have many false positive interactions and false negative edge loss due to the limitations of high-throughput experiments...

Motion and noise artifacts (MNAs) impose limits on the usability of the photoplethysmogram (PPG), particularly in the context of ambulatory monitoring. MNAs can distort PPG, causing erroneous estimation of physiological parameters such as heart rate (HR) and arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2). In this study we present a novel approach, "TifMA," based on using the Time-frequency spectrum of PPG to first detect the MNA-corrupted data and next discard the non-usable part of the corrupted data. The term "non-usable" refers to segments of PPG data from which the HR signal cannot be recovered accurately...

Malnutrition in institutionalised elderly increases morbidity and care costs. Meat and dairy foods are high-quality protein sources so adequate intakes may reduce malnutrition risk. We aimed to determine whether inadequate intakes of meat and dairy foods contribute to malnutrition in institutionalised elderly. This cross-sectional study involved 215 elderly residents (70·2 % females, mean age 85·8 years) from twenty-one aged-care facilities in Melbourne, Australia. Dietary intake was assessed using observed plate waste...
