BACKGROUND: Toe grip strength is the force of a toe on a surface. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between falls in middle-aged individuals and physical strength factors such as toe grip strength and knee extension strength. METHODS: The subjects were 194 middle-aged individuals (388 feet) who were independent in daily life, received no nursing care, and participated in a health sports event organized by a sports club. We evaluated the body composition, blood pressure, vascular age, systemic response, bone density, knee extension strength, and toe grip strength, and examined their relationship using a self-administered questionnaire survey...

This paper shows the ability of simple modified screen-printed devices for the electrochemical detection of ascorbic acid in different samples, including serum samples. Even if the presence of uric acid does not greatly affect the analysis of ascorbic acid using screen-printed carbon electrodes modified by gold nanoparticles, dopamine must be considered an interferent. Thus, the joint determination of the three compounds has been set out using methods of multivariate calibration. The validated models, built by partial least squares regressions, have been used to determine the concentration of ascorbic acid, dopamine and uric acid of spiked serum samples, with successful results...

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have demonstrated a great potential as fluorescent probes for heavy metals monitoring. However, their great reactivity, whose tunability could be difficult to attain, could impair selectivity yielding analytical results with poor accuracy. In this work, the combination in the same analysis of multiple QDs, each with a particular ability to interact with the analyte, assured a multi-point detection that was not only exploited for a more precise analyte discrimination but also for the simultaneous discrimination of multiple mutually interfering species, in the same sample...

BACKGROUND: Postoperative respiratory complications (PRCs) are common after liver transplantation (LT) and contribute significantly to the related morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper was to determine the incidence of PRCs after LT and the value of simple exercise capacity measures as independent predictors of PRCs. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of consecutive adults submitted to LT at a University Hospital in Fortaleza Brazil from March 2013 to March 2015...

OBJECTIVE: Predictors of subclinical inflammatory obesity (SIO) can be important tools for early therapeutic interventions in obesity-related comorbidities. Waist circumference (WC) and BMI have different SIO sensitivity. We aimed to i) identify SIO predictors and ii) investigate whether CD16+ monocytes are associated with BMI- (generally) or WC-defined (centrally) obesity. METHODS: Anthropometric and metabolic/endocrine (namely catecholamines, adrenaline and noradrenaline) parameters were evaluated, and CD16+ monocytes were studied by flow cytometry in the peripheral blood from 63 blood donors, and compared and correlated to each other...

PURPOSE: To determine whether volumes based on the contours of the mucosal surface instead of the oral cavity can be used to predict grade ≥3 acute oral mucosa toxicity in patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANPC) treated with concurrent intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and chemotherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A standardized method for the oral cavity (oral cavity contours, OCC) and a novel method for the mucosal surface (mucosal surface contours, MSC) were developed for the oral mucosa and prospectively applied to the radiation treatment plans of 92 patients treated with concurrent IMRT and chemotherapy for LANPC...

BACKGROUND: Although a number of studies have examined the relationship between depression and obesity, it is still insufficient to establish the specific pattern of relationship between depression and body mass index (BMI) categories. Thus, this study was aimed to investigate the relationship between depression and BMI categories. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted for a cohort of 159,390 Korean based on Kangbuk Samsung Health Study (KSHS). Study participants were classified into 5 groups by Asian-specific cut-off of BMI (18...
