Drowning is the third leading cause of injury death in the pediatric population worldwide, with incidence peaking among those aged 1-4 years and again in adolescence. The purpose of this commentary is to review the basic pathophysiology of drowninginjury and factors that affect the outcome, such as submersion and hypothermia. We also discuss principles of prehospital and in-hospital management, comprising resuscitation and stabilization, administration of oxygen and intravenous liquids, and central reheating...

Unintentional injuries are one of the leading causes of death in Americans. A large proportion of these deaths are attributable to accidental drownings and falls, both of which oftentimes take place in or around swimming pools and swimming pool-related apparatuses such as diving boards. The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has reported drowning incidents as the most common injury-related cause of death in children ages one to four years. Although the AAFP has outlined steps to take to prevent drownings, there has not been a current large-scale study illustrating the effectiveness of these strategies with regard to their effect on the prevalence of swimming pool drowning cases in the last 10 years...

Trauma is the leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality annually in the USA, accounting for 11% of deaths, most commonly due to car crashes, suffocation, drowning, and falls. Prevention is paramount for reducing the incidence of these injuries. As an adult level 1 and pediatric level 2 trauma center, there is a commitment to injury prevention through outreach and education. The Safety Ambassadors Program (SAP) was developed as part of this aim. Safety Ambassadors (SA) are high schoolers who teach elementary school students about safety/injury prevention...

OBJECTIVES: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is recommended in adults with drowning-associated hypothermia and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Our experience of managing a drowned 2-year-old girl with hypothermia (23°C) and cardiac arrest (58 min) prompted this summary using the CAse REport (CARE) guideline to address the question of optimal rewarming procedure in such patients. DESIGN/PATIENTS: Following the CARE guideline, we identified 24 reports in the "PubMed database" describing children less than or equal to 6 years old with a temperature less than or equal to 28°C who had been rewarmed using conventional intensive care ± ECMO...

BACKGROUND: Drowning is a common mechanism of injury in the pediatric population that often requires hospitalization. The primary objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of pediatric drowning patients evaluated in a pediatric emergency department (PED), including the clinical interventions and outcomes of this patient population. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted of pediatric patients evaluated in a mid-Atlantic urban pediatric emergency department from January 2017 to December 2020 after a drowning event...

BACKGROUND: Drowning is the leading cause of death for children under the age of 15 years in Guangdong Province, China. This serious public health issue also exists in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), which have few value-integrated intervention programs. The current study presents an integrated intervention project that aims to explore an effective pattern of prevention for child drowning in rural areas and feasibility to perform in other LMICs. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial by comparing the incidence of non-fatal drowning among children in two groups in rural areas of southern China...

We sought to characterize the incidence and healthcare utilization for mTBI in young children presenting to U.S. emergency departments (ED). METHODS: The Nationwide Emergency Department Sample was queried for children age 0-6 years with mTBI from 2016 to 2019. BACKGROUND: Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for toddlers within the USA. Keeping toddlers within arm's reach while swimming is recommended, yet many caregivers do not. Possibly, caregivers' attitudes are shaped by their expectations about whether they could quickly save a child. The aims of this study are to 1) explore caregivers' views of arm's reach pool supervision in various scenarios and 2) understand whether perceptions of arm's reach pool supervision are impacted by the caregiver's self-reported capability to swim the length of a standard pool...
