A methodological approach based on rare earth elements analysis was developed to observe human activities in the stratigraphic sequence of Alagankulam. The site was one of the main ancient ports in south-eastern India and one of the transoceanic connecting points between East and West during the Classical Period. The sampled sediments where collected from vertical profiles, areas with traces of firing activities and filled deposits. Major, minor and trace element concentrations were measured by the means of spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques...

Dipsadidae is one of the largest clades of extant reptiles, showing an impressive morphological and ecological diversity. Despite this fact, the developmental processes behind its diversity are still largely unknown. In this study, we used 3D reconstructions based on micro-CT data and geometric morphometrics to evaluate the skull morphology of Philodryas agassizii, a small, surface-dwelling dipsadid that consume spiders. Adult individuals of P. agassizii exhibit a cranial morphology frequently observed in juveniles of other surface-dwelling colubroideans, represented in our analysis by its close relative Philodryas patagoniensis...

Two of every three persons living with dementia reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The projected increase in global dementia rates is expected to affect LMICs disproportionately. However, the majority of global dementia care costs occur in high-income countries (HICs), with dementia research predominantly focusing on HICs. This imbalance necessitates LMIC-focused research to ensure that characterization of dementia accurately reflects the involvement and specificities of diverse populations...

HPV vaccination with concomitant HPV-based screening of young women has been proposed for faster cervical cancer elimination. We describe the baseline results of a population-based trial of this strategy to reduce the incidence of HPV. All 89,547 women born 1994-1999 and resident in the capital region of Sweden were personally invited to concomitant HPV vaccination and HPV screening with 26,125 women (29.2%) enrolled between 2021-05-03 and 2022-12-31. Baseline HPV genotyping of cervical samples from the study participants finds, compared to pre-vaccination prevalences, a strong decline of HPV16 and 18 in birth cohorts previously offered vaccination, some decline for cross-protected HPV types but no decline for HPV types not targeted by vaccines...

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension is a serious condition that carries a poor prognosis. While exertional dyspnea is the most common symptom, angina like chest pain, most often due to right ventricle ischemia, may occur at advanced stages. We present a patient with pulmonary hypertension symptomatic for dyspnea and angina in whom computed coronary tomography angiography showed compression of the left main coronary artery by a large pulmonary artery aneurysm. Percutaneous coronary intervention and stenting was performed resulting in significant clinical improvement...

Zwitterionic coatings are an efficient strategy for preventing biomolecule adsorption and enhancing nanoparticle stability in solution. The properties of zwitterions and other antifouling materials, including suppression of nonspecific adsorption and improved colloidal stability of nanoparticles, are believed to derive from their electroneutral and highly hydrophilic nature. Among different zwitterions, short sulfobetaines have been demonstrated to be effective in preventing protein adsorption onto several nanoparticles and providing enhanced colloidal stability...

Melanotic schwannoma (MS) is a rare and infrequent subtype of schwannoma characterized by cytoplasmic deposits of melanosomes (melanin). Unlike the other schwannomas, it could have malignant transformation. Due to distinctive characteristics and atypical behavior from classic schwannomas subtypes, MS were renamed and reclassified as "melanocytic malignant neural sheath tumor" in the 5th ed. of the World Health Organization's classification of central nervous system tumors in 2021. We present two cases of MS that underwent complete surgical resection...

An important provision of the Minamata Convention on Mercury is to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the adopted measures and its implementation. Here, we describe for the first time currently available biotic mercury (Hg) data on a global scale to improve the understanding of global efforts to reduce the impact of Hg pollution on people and the environment. Data from the peer-reviewed literature were compiled in the Global Biotic Mercury Synthesis (GBMS) database (>550,000 data points). These data provide a foundation for establishing a biomonitoring framework needed to track Hg concentrations in biota globally...

Intensive Care to facilitate Organ Donation (ICOD) consists of the initiation or continuation of intensive care measures in patients with a devastating brain injury (DBI) in whom curative treatment is deemed futile and death by neurological criteria (DNC) is foreseen, to incorporate organ donation into their end-of-life plans. In this study we evaluate the outcomes of patients subject to ICOD and identify radiological and clinical factors associated with progression to DNC. In this first prospective multicenter study we tested by multivariate regression the association of clinical and radiological severity features with progression to DNC...

BACKGROUND: Patients with acute brain injury (ABI) are a peculiar population because ABI does not only affect the brain but also other organs such as the lungs, as theorized in brain-lung crosstalk models. ABI patients often require mechanical ventilation (MV) to avoid the complications of impaired respiratory function that can follow ABI; MV should be settled with meticulousness owing to its effects on the intracranial compartment, especially regarding positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP)...

Assessing patient decision-making capacity while adhering to the requests of patients with mental illness remains a great ethical challenge. In patients with severe mental illness, the assessment of decision-making capacity can be difficult, particularly when a care team is also trying to navigate cultural, educational, and linguistic barriers. It becomes especially complex in situations where the patient is not only diagnosed with a severe mental illness but also suffers from a comorbid medical illness that the patient refuses to have treated appropriately...

INTRODUCTION: Social adaptation is a multifaceted process that encompasses cognitive, social, and affective factors. Previous research often focused on isolated variables, overlooking their interactions, especially in challenging environments. Our study addresses this by investigating how cognitive (working memory, verbal intelligence, self-regulation), social (affective empathy, family networks, loneliness), and psychological (locus of control, self-esteem, perceived stress) factors interact to influence social adaptation...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: ATP is highly accumulated in secretory vesicles and secreted upon exocytosis from neurons and endocrine cells. In adrenal chromaffin granules, intraluminal ATP reaches concentrations over 100 mM. However, how these large amounts of ATP contribute to exocytosis has not been investigated. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: Exocytotic events in bovine and mouse adrenal chromaffin cells were measured with single cell amperometry. Cytosolic Ca2+ measurements were carried out in Fluo-4 loaded cells...

Osteochondral lesion of the talus (OLT) is a commune cause of chronic ankle pain. Symptomatic lesions require surgical treatment. Currently, lesions with diameter less than 107.4 mm2  are treated with bone marrow stimulating technique with notable success rate. However, more extensive lesions show less predictable surgical results. Autologous matrix-induced chondrogenesis has proven to provide satisfactory medium and long-term results on OLTs. In the current review, we describe an all-arthroscopic technique and the Milan-Tel Aviv lesion assessment protocol...

This study describes the anthelmintic efficacy of an organic fraction (EtOAc- F) from Guazuma ulmifolia leaves and evaluation of its reactive oxidative stress on Haemonchus contortus. The first step was to assess the anthelmintic effect of EtOAc-F at 0.0, 3.5, 7.0 and 14 mg kg of body weight (BW) in gerbil's (Meriones unguiculatus) artificially infected with H. contortus infective larvae (L3). The second step was to evaluate the preliminary toxicity after oral administration of the EtOAc-F in gerbils. Finally, the third step was to determine the relative expression of biomarkers as glutathione (GPx), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) against H...
