Sixty minutes of restraint stress, preceded by chlorpromazine administration which stimulates somatotrophic hormone secretion (STH), produced an acute post-stress diabetic response (PDR) in normal-intact rats as well as in adrenalectomized rats. This PDR lasted 3 to 4 hours and was evaluated by glucemia and glucosuria determination and by the appearance of an insulin antagonist, alpha2-glycoprotein STH-dependent, called alpha2-inhibitor, which inhibits glucose uptake by isolated tissues. When tested in the suprahepatic blood of animals after stress it showed increased activity, both in normal and in adrenalectomized rats...

We studied serum zinc, copper, ceruloplasmin, insulin, basal glycemia and cholesterol in 49 diabetics on oral anti-diabetic agent and in 10 normal people. We found there is an elevation of serum zinc, copper and ceruloplasmin in the diabetic group that is statistically significant (p less than 0.001). There is a significant correlation between zinc and insulin (p less than 0.001), and between the quotient zinc/copper and cholesterol (p less than 0.001). The increase of plasma zinc can reflect a deficient storage or a chronic hypersecretion of insulin in hyperglucemic patients...

The delta6 desaturation of unsaturated acyl-CoA is the first reaction involved in the normal biosynthesis of all polyunsaturated fatty acids families in animal microsomes. Due to this key position it can regulate the biosynthesis of the fatty acids of the series. The reaction is modified by competition with substrates and products, ATP, and acyl-CoA acceptors. Dietary glucose and fructose inhibit the enzyme whereas protein diets and essential fatty acid deficient diets enhance the reaction independently of hormonal effects...
