COMPARATIVE STUDY

INTRODUCTION: Hartmann's operation has occasionally been criticised for its high morbidity-mortality and permanent stomas. To compare risk factors is difficult due to different severity scores for diverticulitis with no standardisation. We attempted to define the morbidity-mortality of Hartmann's operation for sigmoid diverticulitis with peritonitis Hinchey III-IV and to identify some factors associated with morbidity-mortality and non-restoration of intestinal continuity. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 72 patients: age, gender, ASA score, length of time between symptoms and surgery, Hinchey's score, Mannheim index, preoperative creatinine and co-morbidities...

Despite advances in diagnosis, surgical treatment, antimicrobial therapy and intensive care support, severe secondary peritonitis remains a potentially fatal affliction. The purpose of this study is to present our experience of postoperative mortality in 255 patients with secondary acute peritonitis between 1998 to 2002. The Mannhein Peritonitis Index score (MPI) was calculated for each patient to predict the peritonitis related in-hospital death. Both literature reviews and our results show a strong correlation between some etiopathogenetic elements (age, origin of sepsis, organ failure, ...

BACKGROUND: Early prognostic evaluation of patients affected by acute peritonitis is really desirable to program a correct therapeutic plan, selecting high-risk patients for more aggressive therapeutic procedures. The Mannheim peritonitis index is reliable and easy to apply, so its use is possible without the need of intensive care units. METHODS: Between 1991 and 1995 a total of 235 patients were operated on for acute peritonitis. A retrospective study on this group of patients was performed in order to estimate prognostic reliability of Mannheim peritonitis index...
