Vascular complications are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in diabetes mellitus (DM). The RAGE (receptor for advanced glycation end products)-NADPH oxidase-NF-κB signal transduction pathway plays an important role in the development of oxidative stress-related vascular complications in DM. Ursolic acid (UA), a pentacyclic triterpenoid derived from plants, has been reported to have multiple pharmacological effects, including a potent antioxidant activity. This study aimed to investigate both the effect of UA on aortic injury in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and the drug's mechanism of action...

AIM: To determine whether ATP-sensitive potassium channels are altered in VSMC from arotas and mesenteric arteries of obese rat, and their association with obesity-triggered increase in blood pressure. METHODS: Obesity was induced by 24 weeks of high-fat diet feeding in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Control rats were fed with standard laboratory rat chow. Blood pressure and body weight of these rats were measured every 4 weeks. At the end of 24 weeks, K(ATP) channelmediated relaxation responses in the aortas and mesenteric arteries, K(ATP) channel current, and gene expression were examined, respectively...

PURPOSE: Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) has been implicated in graft protection because its induction is associated with long-surviving allografts. The aim of this study was to analyze the efficacy of adenovirus-mediated HO-1 overexpression to inhibit graft arteriosclerosis and estimate whether the protective role correlated with nuclear factor kappaB (NF=kappaB) expression and grafts apoptosis. METHODS: Aortic transplantation was performed using inbred Brown-Norway (BN) rats (RT1n male) as donors and Lewis rats (RT1l male) as recipients...

The goal of our research is try to explain the electrophysiological mechanisms of alternation in T-wave of ECG in ultrahigh static magnetic field (SMF). The magneto-hydrodynamics model study shows that ultrahigh SMF can induce reduction in the volume flow rate of the blood in human arota more than 10%, thus may lead to anoxia condition of acute ischemia. Using an ionic-based theoretical model of the cardiac ventricular cell, we simulate transmural heterogeneous suppression of the action potential plateau and action potential duration shortening in case of different anoxia degree...

BACKGROUND: Resistance testing is useful in the management of virological failure patients, although the best method to be used in clinical practice has not been determined. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, multicentre, controlled clinical trial was performed to compare the usefulness of drug resistance testing with a recombinant viral phenotype method or with a virtual phenotype, a genotyping interpretation system. Planned 300 HIV-infected adults failing their current antiretroviral therapy (HIV RNA > 1000 copies/ml) were centrally randomized 1:1 to resistance testing with a recombinant viral phenotype method or with a virtual phenotype, after stratifying according to previous drug exposure (one or two versus three drug classes)...

Among 1011 patients undergoing infrarenal aortic and infrainguinal vascular surgery in a 90-month period (1986-1993), 29 patients (2.9%) with clinical, angiographic and pathologic evidence of atheroembolism were identified. Over one-third (44.8%) of atheroemboli were iatrogenic and the rest spontaneous. All iatrogenic atheroemboli were precipitated by angiographic (n = 11; 84.6%) or operative manipulation (n = 2; 15.4%). The sources of emboli were in the abdominal arota (16), iliac (seven) and femoropopliteal (six) arteries...

The cDNA encoding prostacyclin synthase (PGIS) was isolated from a bovine arota cDNA library. The cDNA contained an open reading frame of 1500 nucleotides encoding a polypeptide of 500 amino acids with a Mr of 56,675. The predicted amino acid sequence contains four polypeptide sequences determined from purified bovine PGIS. Comparison of the PGIS sequence with other protein sequences in protein data banks indicates that PGIS has considerable sequence similarity with cytochrome P450s; the closest related sequence is that of human cholesterol 7-alpha-monooxygenase (CYP 7)...

The aortas of 9 months aged Show Racer and White Carneau pigeons were examined for their PGE2, PGF2 alpha and 6-keto-PGF1 alpha synthesis from labelled arachidonic acid by radiothinlayer chromatography. The prostacyclin formation was estimated by means of Moncada's bioassay. PGE2 and PGF 2 alpha synthesis in the aorta of pigeons is higher than in rats, whereas less 6-keto-PGF1 alpha is formed in pigeon aortas. The susceptible White Carneau pigeons synthesitize more prostaglandins than the resistant Show Racer pigeons...

A survey of the literature on coren. Operative mortality was reduced from 39% (1960 through 1970) to 26% (1971 through 1978). It was higher in patients operated on during the first three months of life and in those with associated cardiac lesions. The incidence rate of restenosis has diminished from 27% to 4% by using the aortoplasty with a subclavian flap. Since the natural and the "innatural" history emphasize the importance of early diagnosis and treatment for patients with coarctation of the aorta, these recent results suggest that the optimal time for elective surgical correction is around the age of one year, and that the subclavian flap procedure is the technique of choice at this age...

Human plasma contains a factor capable of stimulating vascular prostacyclin generation even in atherosclerotic vessels with minimal in-vitro capacity for PGI2-synthesis. The activity of this prostacyclin stimulating plasma factor (PSPF) has been reported to be elevated in renal failure and hepatic coma. We are not aware of any data as to whether this PSPF plays a role in maintaining hemostatic balance in patients with peripheral vascular lesions. Therefore, we examined 62 patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD)...

Dissecting aneurysm of the descending thoraic aorta (type iii) is a specific disease process whose pathogenesis, pathologic description, surgical treatment, and prognosis is different from dissections of the ascending arota (types l and ll). From 1964 through 1974, 91 patients underwent surgical correction of type iii dissection. The operative mortality was 21% and late mortality, up to ten years follow-up, was 13%. During the past four years, operative mortality has dropped to 6.5%. Mortality was determined by extent of the aneurysm and underlying cardiac disease...
