OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the presence of Apolipoprotein E epsilon4 genotype (ApoE epsilon4) is associated with outcomes of traumatic brain injury in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The ApoE genotype was examined in the group of 70 pediatric patients who suffered from traumatic brain injury. The group consists of 48 boys and 22 girls, and the most frequent was the E3 isoform of ApoE. Polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used for the ApoE genotype assessment...

The authors valueted the distribution of Hepatic Hydatidosis in the Region Puglia (Italy) by hospital dimission cards (schede di dimissione ospedaliera). At present, the SDO represent the most important information tool to monitor hospital activity. The authors examined 468 cases of hepatic Hydatidosis admitted in regional hospital during 1996-2000. 54% were men and 46% women, 75% of whom aged between 40-60 anni. The median hospitalization time was of 12 days and 80% were surgical departments. All the cases examined were uniformedly distributed in surgical hospitals...

This study examined the psychosocial responses of school-age children to hospitalization. The subjects were 50 children, between 8 and 12 years of age, who were unscheduled admissions. The children's usual pre-hospital behavior was compared to their behavior during the first week following hospitalization and one month after dismissal. Repeated measure analysis of variance was used to demonstrate that there was no change in the school-age children's behavior following hospitalization. A moderate relationship was found between the children's usual prehospital behavior and the number of previous hospitalizations...

Three hundred and twenty-seven patients with intracranial aneurysm were managed at the Neurosurgical Division of Emergency Department of the Cardarelli Hospital of Naples. Of the 327 patient, 231 (70.6%), (I group), were operated on after 72 hours and 96 patients (29.4%), (II group), were operated on within 72 hours of subaracnoid hemorrhage. The patients operated on within 72 hours of hemorrhage (II group) were divided in two subgroups: 29 patients operated on within 72 hours formed the IIa group ("ultraearly" surgery) and 67 patients operated on between 24-72 hours formed the IIb group...

Among the several methods employed for the detection of hepatitis B antigen (HBAg) and hepatitis B antibody (HBAb), radioimmunoassay is considered to be the most sensitive and specific. This paper describes a radioimmunoprecipitation test (RIP) for HBAg and HBAb standardized in our laboratory; it consists of a double-antibody precipitation test in a micro-titer system employing 125I-labeled HBAg. The test is compared with double immunodiffusion (ID) and with counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CEP) in the detection of HBAg and HBAb in healthy persons and in patients with acute and chronic liver disease...

100 patients with endocardial cushion defect of the partial type underwent surgical correction between the years 1957-1975. The age of patients ranged from 3 to 57 years with a mean of 18 years. In 89 patients there was a mitral insufficiency. The repair of the mitral valve was performed in 78 patients; in 21 was repaired also the tricuspidal valve. The hospital mortality was of 8 patients. The mortality was correlated with the age of the patients, the pulmonary pressure and with the presence of malformations of the tricuspid valve...
