BACKGROUND: Distal Doppler-guided transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization with mucopexy (Doppler-guided THD) seems to be associated with better short-term outcomes than conventional hemorrhoidectomy, but there are little data about long-term recurrence. The aim of this study was to compare Doppler-guided THD for grade III-IV hemorrhoids with conventional hemorrhoidectomy with regard to long-term postoperative morbidity and recurrence. METHODS: This was a single-center longitudinal and comparative study of a cohort of patients who underwent either distal Doppler-guided THD with low ligation of the hemorrhoidal artery and mucopexy or conventional excisional hemorrhoidectomy (Milligan and Morgan or Ferguson) for grade III and IV hemorrhoids...

The Tousled Like kinases (TLKs) are involved in numerous cellular functions, including the DNA Damage Response (DDR), but only a handful of substrates have been identified thus far. Through a novel proteomic screen, we have now identified 165 human proteins interacting with TLK1, and we have focused this work on NEK1 because of its known role in the DDR, upstream of ATR and Chk1. TLK1 and NEK1 were found to interact by coIP, and their binding is strengthened following exposure of cells to H2O2. Following incubation with doxorubicin, TLK1 and NEK1 relocalize with nuclear repair foci along with γH2AX...

This study was designed to determine whether scores on selected Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) scales could be used to differentiate between individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia (SCZ) and major depressive disorder (MDD). The sample was drawn from 2 psychiatric inpatient hospitals and included data from 199 individuals with SCZ and 808 individuals with MDD. A series of multivariate analyses of variance, analyses of variance, and odds ratios were calculated to determine which MMPI-2-RF scales provide the best differentiation between individuals presenting with these 2 disorders...

For the first time, ultrafast deactivations of photoexcited water-solvated pyrimidine nucleosides are mapped employing hybrid QM(CASPT2)/MM(AMBER) optimizations that account for explicit solvation, sugar effects, and dynamically correlated potential energy surfaces. Low-energy S1/S0 ring-puckering and ring-opening conical intersections (CIs) are suggested to drive the ballistic coherent subpicosecond (<200 fs) decays observed in each pyrimidine, the energetics controlling this processes correlating with the lifetimes observed...

BACKGROUND: The Nutrition Education for Management of Osteodystrophy trial showed that stage-based nutrition education by dedicated dietitians surpasses existing practices in Lebanon with respect to lowering serum phosphorus among general haemodialysis patients. The present study explores the effect of nutrition education specifically on hyperphosphataemic patients from this trial. METHODS: Hyperphosphataemic haemodialysis patients were allocated to a dedicated dietitian (DD), a trained hospital dietitian (THD) and existing practice (EP) protocols...

This paper presents a new approach to identify the respiratory phases of heart cycles from acceleration signals (i.e., seismocardiogram) recorded from the sternum, in back to front direction. The acceleration signals were recorded simultaneously with a single lead electrocardiogram (ECG), and the respiratory signal (using a chest band strain gauge) from 20 healthy subjects. Two accelerometer-derived respiration (ADR) signals were computed by computing the lower and upper envelope of the accelerometer signal...

UV to visible and near-infrared converting thin films of YbVO4 have been deposited by atomic layer deposition, using the precursor combinations Yb(thd)3 (thd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione) and O3, and VO(thd)2 and O3 at a deposition temperature of 240 °C, followed by post deposition annealing at 400-1000 °C. The UV absorption and the visible and near-infrared emission have been investigated in detail. The structure, thickness and composition of the deposited films have been studied by X-ray diffraction, ellipsometry, and X-ray fluorescence, respectively...

In recent years, renewable energy sources have been considered the most encouraging resources for grid and off-grid power generation. This paper presents an improved current control strategy for a three-phase photovoltaic grid-connected inverter (GCI) under unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions. It is challenging to suppress the harmonic content in the output current below a pre-set value in the GCI. It is also difficult to compensate for unbalanced loads even when the grid is under disruption due to total harmonic distortion (THD) and unbalanced loads...

Renal involvement in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is common and has been associated with an increased risk of mortality [1]. Early diagnosis is imperative to control proteinuria and prevent the progression to end-stage renal disease. Standard induction therapies include cyclophosphamide (CYC) and mycophenolate mofetil (MMF); however, it has been estimated that approximately 30% of patients are refractory to these standard treatments after 1 year [2]. We present two cases of patients diagnosed with lupus nephritis (LN) who demonstrated persistent proteinuria while on standard treatments that markedly improved after addition of thalidomide (THD)...

[Er2(thd)4Pc]·2C6H6 (1) (Hthd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptanedione), obtained as green crystals from the reaction of [Er(thd)3]·2H2O with lithium phthalocyanine, Li2Pc, is a stable dinuclear complex with two Er(III) centers. Its lattice benzene solvent can be exchanged by soaking the crystals in dichloromethane to give [Er2(thd)4Pc]·2CH2Cl2 (2). The magnetic susceptibility data suggest different coupling interactions for the two complexes. While 1 exhibits fast relaxation and an estimated energy barrier of Ea = 2...

Thalidomide (THD) is a BCS class II drug with renewed and growing therapeutic applicability. Along with the low aqueous solubility, additional poor biopharmaceutical properties of the drug, i.e. chemical instability, high crystallinity, and polymorphism, lead to a slow and variable oral absorption. In this view, we developed solid dispersions (SDs) containing THD dispersed in different self-emulsifying carriers aiming at an enhanced absorption profile for the drug. THD was dispersed in lauroyl macrogol-32 glycerides (Gelucire(®) 44/14) and α-tocopherol polyethylene glycol succinate (Kolliphor(®) TPGS), in the presence or absence of the precipitation inhibitor polyvinylpyrrolidone K30 (PVP K30), by means of the solvent method...

There exist many tools and methods for construction of co-expression network from gene expression data and for extraction of densely connected gene modules. In this paper, a method is introduced to construct co-expression network and to extract co-expressed modules having high biological significance. The proposed method has been validated on several well known microarray datasets extracted from a diverse set of species, using statistical measures, such as p and q values. The modules obtained in these studies are found to be biologically significant based on Gene Ontology enrichment analysis, pathway analysis, and KEGG enrichment analysis...

Lamiaceae plants mostly accumulate active ingredients in their leaves. The subfamily Nepetoideae, including the genus Mentha L., is characterized by the presence of essential oil and antioxidant phenolics, chiefly hydroxycinnamic acids with predominance of rosmarinic acid, and flavonoids. Mentha × piperita and M. spicata are the most broadly used mints in both medicine and industry, while M. x villosa is less known in our country. Herbal drugs in the form of leaves are usually analysed unpartitioned, while single leaves insertions have only been studied occasionally...

Integrins function as bi-directional signaling transducers that regulate cell-cell and cell-matrix signals across the membrane. A key modulator of integrin activation is talin, a large cytoskeletal protein that exists in an autoinhibited state in quiescent cells. Talin is a large 235-kDa protein composed of an N-terminal 45-kDa FERM (4.1, ezrin-, radixin-, and moesin-related protein) domain, also known as the talin head domain, and a series of helical bundles known as the rod domain. The talin head domain consists of four distinct lobes designated as F0-F3...

PURPOSE: Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is a widely used technique for bacterial and viral infection diagnosis. Herein, we report our preliminary experience in retrieving H. pylori genetic sequences in stools and analyzing genotypic clarithromycin resistance by RT-PCR (noninvasive), with the aim of comparing this procedure with that performed on biopsy samples (invasive). MATERIALS AND METHODS: After 'in vitro' demonstration of H. pylori DNA detection from pure and stool-mixed bacteria, 52 consecutive patients at the first diagnosis of infection were investigated...

Contemporary models of psychopathology-encompassing internalizing, externalizing, and thought dysfunction factors-have gained significant support. Although research indicates the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008 /2011) measures these domains of psychopathology, this study addresses extant limitations in MMPI-2-RF diagnostic validity research by examining associations between all MMPI-2-RF substantive scales and broad dichotomous indicators of internalizing, externalizing, and thought dysfunction diagnoses in a sample of 1,110 forensic inpatients...
