Developing a cost-effective and robust triclustering algorithm that can identify triclusters of high biological significance in the gene-sample-time (GST) domain is a challenging task. Most existing triclustering algorithms can detect shifting and scaling patterns in isolation, they are not able to handle co-occurring shifting-and-scaling patterns. This paper makes an attempt to address this issue. It introduces a robust triclustering algorithm called THD-Tricluster to identify triclusters over the GST domain...

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Myocardial infarction (MI) is considered as the major inducer to the morbidity and mortality related to coronary occlusion. Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge is widely applied in the clinic for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases. The preparation of traditional herb decoction (THD) is not only time consuming but also difficult to keep uniform for every time. New usage form of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge with characteristics of convenience, uniform and efficiency is needed...

Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy (MNGIE) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by thymidine phosphorylase (TP) deficiency resulting in systemic accumulation of thymidine (d-Thd) and deoxyuridine (d-Urd) and characterized by early-onset neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms. Long-term effective and safe treatment is not available. Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation may improve clinical manifestations but carries disease and transplant-related risks. In this study, lentiviral vector-based hematopoietic stem cell gene therapy (HSCGT) was performed in Tymp -/- Upp1 -/- mice with the human phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) promoter driving TYMP ...

4-(Methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK) and its metabolite 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) are carcinogenic in animal models and are believed to play an important role in human lung carcinogenesis in cigarette smokers. Cytochrome P450-mediated metabolism of these tobacco-specific nitrosamines produces reactive species that alkylate DNA in the form of pyridyloxobutyl (POB)- or pyridylhydroxybutyl (PHB)-DNA adducts. Understanding the formation mechanism and overall levels of these adducts can potentially enhance cancer prevention methods through the identification of particularly susceptible smokers...

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) exhibits a structured phylogeographic distribution worldwide linked with human migrations. We sought to infer how the interactions between distinct human populations shape the global population structure of Mtb on a regional scale. We applied the recently described timescaled haplotypic density (THD) technique on 638 minisatellite-based Mtb genotypes from French tuberculosis patients. THD with a long-term (200 y) timescale indicated that Mtb population in France had been mostly influenced by interactions with Eastern and Southern Europe and, to a lesser extent, Northern and Middle Africa, consistent with historical migrations favored by geographic proximity or commercial exchanges with former French colonies...

We present a rare case of traumatic bilateral asymmetric hip dislocation with pelvic fractures and a traumatic diaphragmatic hernia. A 53-year-old machinist was transferred to our emergency department with the suspicion of a bilateral hip dislocation after he was trapped between an elevator and the roof. Immediate closed reduction of the hips was not performed because of the expected risk of increasing hemodynamic instability with muscular relaxation. An emergent full-body computed tomography (CT) scan was made to assess injuries with need for further operative treatment...

BACKGROUND: Traumatic hip dislocations (THD) are a medical emergency. There is debate whether the painful reduction of a dislocated hip should be first attempted using primary conscious sedation (PCS) or primary general anesthesia (PGA) METHODS: All cases of native THD from 2006 to 2015 in the trauma registry of a level 1 trauma center were reviewed. The primary outcome was successful reduction of the THD. RESULTS: 67 patients had a native, meaning not a hip prosthesis, THD...

AIM: This study aims to compare the early and late outcomes of transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) versus stapled hemorrhoidopexy (SH) for the treatment of hemorrhoidal disease. METHODS: From January 2013 to December 2014, 100 patients-50 patients on each arm-were randomly allocated to THD or SH groups. The inclusion criteria were grade III and IV hemorrhoids diagnosed by clinical examination and proctoscopy. The primary outcome was to compare the recurrence rate with a minimum follow-up of 2 years, and the secondary outcome was to compare complications rate, time to return to work postsurgery, procedure length, and patient's satisfaction between the 2 techniques...

Lymphatic and hematogenous spread are the most common ways for tumors to metastasize. Angiogenesis is essential for tumor growth and metastasis. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) particularly VEGF-A is important in the process of angiogenesis. The current research has indicated that thalidomide (THD) may be able to inhibit angiogenesis, stimulate the activity of the immune system and inhibit the adherence of cancer cells to stromal cells. These changes may lead to suppression of tumor occurrence and development...

The first example of ionic β-diketonates in which both the cation and anion are octahedral coordinatively saturated metal diketonate moieties are reported. Heterometallic tin-transition-metal heteroleptic diketonates were obtained through solid-state redox reactions and are formulated as {[SnIV (thd)3 ]+ [MII (hfac)3 ]- } (MII = Mn (1), Fe (2), Co (3); thd = 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionate, hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate). X-ray single-crystal structural investigations along with DART mass spectrometry, multinuclear NMR, and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been used to confirm an assignment of metal oxidation states in compounds 1-3...

In this study, we demonstrate that remarkably reduced open-circuit voltage in highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) from a blend of phenyl-C61 -butyric acid methyl ester and a recently developed conjugated small molecule (DPPEZnP-THD) upon solvent vapor annealing (SVA) is due to two independent sources: increased radiative recombination and increased nonradiative recombination. Through the measurements of electroluminescence due to the emission of the charge-transfer state and photovoltaic external quantum efficiency measurement, we can quantify that the open-circuit voltage losses in a device with SVA due to the radiative recombination and nonradiative recombination are 0...

Heteroleptic titanium alkoxides with three different ligands, i.e., [Ti(Oi Pr)(X)(Y)] (X = tridentate, Y = bidentate ligands), were synthesized to find efficient metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) precursors for TiO2 thin films. Acetylacetone (acacH) or 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedione (thdH) was employed as a bidentate ligand, while N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) was employed as a tridentate ligand. It was expected that the oxygen and moisture susceptibility of titanium alkoxides, as well as their tendency to form oligomers, would be greatly reduced by placing multidentate and bulky ligands around the center Ti atom...

The Fas/FasL signaling pathway is one of the major pathways that regulate apoptosis. Increasing studies have shown that the activation of the Fas/FasL signaling pathway is closely associated with testicular cell apoptosis. However, the mechanism involved is still unclear. We discuss recent findings regarding the molecular mechanisms by which environmental toxicants induce testicular pathology via Fas/FasL signaling. These findings suggest that Fas/FasL signaling is employed to impact the sensitivity (a response to external factors) of germ cells, disrupt steroidogenic hormone and cytokine metabolism mediated by Sertoli cells, and elicit the activation of NFAT (nuclear factor of activated T-cells) in Leydig cell apoptosis...

4-1BB (CD137) is a TNF receptor superfamily (TNFRSF) member that is thought to undergo receptor trimerization upon binding to its trimeric TNF superfamily ligand (4-1BBL) to stimulate immune responses. 4-1BB also can bind to the tandem repeat-type lectin galectin-9 (Gal-9), and signaling through mouse (m)4-1BB is reduced in galectin-9 (Gal-9)-deficient mice, suggesting a pivotal role of Gal-9 in m4-1BB activation. Here, using sulfur-SAD phasing, we determined the crystal structure of m4-1BB to 2.2-Å resolution...

INTRODUCTION: With high incidence of haemorrhoidal disease and significant complication rates of traditional haemorrhoidectomy procedures, transanal haemorrhoidal artery ligation and mucopexy (THD) emerges as a minimally invasive procedure with superior results. However, it is crucial that effectiveness of results and patient satisfaction be gauged based on post-operative experience, symptomology and recurrence. AIM: Our aim is to provide a long-term analysis of efficacy and patient's satisfaction for the procedure, for the largest patient population, in correlation to presenting symptoms and degree of haemorrhoids...

Introduction: Most implantable hearing aids currently available were developed to compensate the sensorineural hearing loss by driving middle ear structures (e.g., the ossicles). These devices are successfully used in round window (RW) stimulation clinically, although this was initially not the intended use. Here, a novel microactuator, specifically designed for RW stimulation, was tested in human temporal bones to determine actuator performance and applicability. Methods: Stapes footplate response to RW stimulation was determined experimentally in human temporal bones and the obtained sound pressure output level was estimated...
