BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormone deficiency during fetal life could affect the cardiac function in later life. The mechanism underlying this action in fetal hypothyroidism (FH) in rats has not been elucidated thus far. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluation the effect of FH on cardiac function in male rats and to determine the contribution of α-myosin heavy chain (MHC) and β-MHC isoforms. METHODS: Six pregnant female rats were randomly divided into two groups: The hypothyroid group received water containing 6-propyl-2-thiouracil during gestation and the controls consumed tap water...

A study of 17 muscle biopsies from patients with myasthenia gravis was done, using freshfrozen section and histochemistry tecnics. It was found 15 abnormal muscle biopsies. The most common abnormality were small dark angular fibers, excess of lipids droplets outside the muscle membrane, changes in fiber size and type II fiber atrophy. These findings suggested denervation in 11 biopsies, type II fiber atrophy in 7, linfocyte infiltration in 4, fiber necrosis with fagocitosis in 1 and 2 were normal. Was noted a direct correlation between the disease duration and the severity of the histological abnormality...

The highest increase in the mitotic index (MI) reticuloendothelial cells observed in the experiment after antioxidant treatment coincided in time with the maximal MI value of these cells in the untreated animals. However, the maximal increase of MI in hepatocytes took place when the minimal value of MI was registered in cells of the control animals. A significant increase in MI occurred both in hepatocytes and reticuloendothelial cells within the two first hours after antioxidant injection, but at this very time a more evident stimulation was observed for the hepatocytes...
