BACKGROUND: Virtual simulations (VSs) enhance clinical competencies and skills. However, a previous systematic review of 9 RCT studies highlighted a paucity of literature on the effects of haptic feedback in surgical VSs. An updated systematic and scoping review was conducted to encompass more studies and a broader range of study methodologies. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on July 31, 2023, in MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane. English language studies comparing haptic vs non-haptic conditions and using VSs were included...

Mass participation events include endurance events (e.g., marathon, triathlon) and/or competitive tournaments (e.g., baseball, tennis, football (soccer) tournaments). Event management requires medical administrative and participant care planning. Medical management provides safety advice and care at the event that accounts for large numbers of participants, anticipated injury and illness, variable environment, repeated games or matches, and mixed age groups of varying athletic ability. This document does not pertain to the care of the spectator...

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of infection prevention and control measures for all medical procedures, including ultrasound examinations. As the use of ultrasound increases across more medical modalities, including point-of-care ultrasound, so does the risk of possible transmission from equipment to patients and patients to patients. This is particularly relevant for endocavity transducers, such as trans-vaginal, trans-rectal and trans-oesophageal, which could be contaminated with organisms from blood, mucosal, genital or rectal secretions...

The study of central nervous system (CNS) tumors is a subject of great interest and such knowledge is of great importance in medical practice. The classifications of CNS neoplasms began in the mid-19th century, until the World Health Organization (WHO) published, in 1979, the first edition of a useful systematic review for the purpose of establishing a common language for all medical specialties. To date, 5 updated editions of neoplastic taxonomy have been published. The fifth edition, from 2021, consolidates the paradigm shift brought about by molecular advances, although the transition between morphological and molecular biological characterization is still in progress...

INTRODUCTION: Restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED) is a sleep-related sensory-motor disorder associated with poor sleep quality and impaired daily functioning. In patients affected by chronic RLS/WED, a pharmacological therapy is recommended. International guidelines suggest to start the treatment with a α2δ calcium channel ligand in most cases, unless contraindicated. AREAS COVERED: The present review is based on an extensive Internet and PubMed search from 1986 to 2024...

OBJECTIVES: To update (from a survey conducted in 2013) the description and quantification of clinical pharmacy services in Canadian EDs. METHODS: All Canadian hospitals with an ED and at least 50 acute care beds were contacted to identify the presence of dedicated ED pharmacy services (defined as at least 0...

BACKGROUND: Nurses may make medication errors during the implementation of therapeutic interventions, which initially threaten the patient's health and safety and prolong their hospital stay. These errors have always been a challenge for healthcare systems. Given that factors such as the timing, type, and causes of medication errors can serve as suitable predictors for their occurrence, we have decided to conduct a review study aiming to investigate the prevalence of medication errors and the associated factors among Iranian nurses...

Wandering spiders (genus Phoneutria) hold a prominent position as some of the worlds most medically significant venomous arachnids, especially in Brazil. In this study, we record and illustrate for the first time, the Darwin wasp Camera thoracica (Szpligeti, 1916) as a natural enemy of the ctenid Phoneutria nigriventer (Keyserling, 1891). Furthermore, we provide a description of the previously unknown male wasp, update and standardize the description of the female, and provide biological notes.

Hypertension has become a central risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease, underscoring the importance of its accurate diagnosis. Numerous studies have established a close relationship between elevated systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure and an increased risk of cardiovascular event (CVE). Traditionally, blood pressure (BP) measurements performed in clinical settings have been the main method for diagnosing and assessing hypertension. However, in recent years, it has been recognized that BP measurements obtained outside the clinical setting, using self-monitoring blood pressure (SMBP) and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), offer a more realistic perspective of patients' daily lives and therefore provide more reliable results...

Ultrasound is a promising medical imaging modality benefiting from low-cost and real-time acquisition. Accurate tracking of an anatomical landmark has been of high interest for various clinical workflows such as minimally invasive surgery and ultrasound-guided radiation therapy. However, tracking an anatomical landmark accurately in ultrasound video is very challenging, due to landmark deformation, visual ambiguity and partial observation. In this paper, we propose a long-short diffeomorphism memory network (LSDM), which is a multi-task framework with an auxiliary learnable deformation prior to supporting accurate landmark tracking...

Since the World Health Organization (WHO) 2016 revision, the number of molecular markers required for diffuse gliomas has increased, placing a burden on clinical practice. We have established an in-house, molecular diagnostic platform using Senshin-Iryo, a feature of Japan's unique healthcare system, and partially modified the analysis method in accordance with the WHO 2021 revision. Herein, we review over a total 5 years of achievements using this platform. Analyses of IDH, BRAF, and H3 point mutations, loss of heterozygosity (LOH) on 1p/19q and chromosomes 10 and 17, and MGMT methylation were combined into a set that was submitted to Senshin-Iryo as "Drug resistance gene testing for anticancer chemotherapy" and was approved in August 2018...

BACKGROUND: Medical examinations contain repeatedly measured data from multiple visits, including imaging variables collected from different modalities. However, the utility of such data for the prediction of time-to-event is unknown, and only a fraction of the data is typically used for risk prediction. We hypothesized that multimodal longitudinal imaging data could improve dynamic disease prognosis of cardiovascular and renal disease (CVRD). METHODS: In a multi-centered cohort of 5,114 CARDIA participants, we included 166 longitudinal imaging variables from five imaging modalities: Echocardiography (Echo), Cardiac and Abdominal Computed Tomography (CT), Dual-Energy x-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) collected from young adulthood to mid-life over 30 years (1985-2016) to perform dynamic survival analysis of CVRD events using machine learning dynamic survival analysis (Dynamic-DeepHit, LTRCforest, and Extended Cox for Time-varying Covariates)...
