Correlations between inborn (constituional) disgust propensity, dynamics of personality disorders and development of contamination fear in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) were studied in 54 patients with milder forms of mysophobia. Three types of contamination fear characterized by different combinations of disgust propensity and personality traits were singled out. Clinical features of OCD were shown to correspond to premorbid personality while denotative characteristics of OCD were correlated with constituional phenomenon of disgust propensity...

Mysophobia - fear of contamination is one of the most prevalent types of the obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). "Moral mysophobia" is a ritual of cleanliness and avoidant behavior due to unpleasant obsessive thoughts. The presence of "moral" component in this subtype of contamination fear is supposed to cause high level of treatment resistance. The study included 16 patients with "moral mysophobia". The psychopathological structure of the phenomenon was described. Delusional symptoms and mental automatisms were found to contribute to its development...

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is rare psychiatric disorder during pregnancy, and is often therapy-resistant. We report a 36-year-old pregnant woman with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder successfully treated by modified-electroconvulsive therapy. During the pregnancy, severe mysophobia and compulsive washing appeared, so severely that she was unable to lie down, endangering the life of the fetus. Since the pharmacotherapy was ineffective, modified electroconvulsive therapy (m-ECT) was performed in cooperation with the obstetrician and the anesthesiologist, along with monitored cardiotocography throughout the procedure...

We describe the first reported case of symptomatic psychosis with the 'hallucination of soliloquy.' A 48[correction of 40]-year-old woman with Hashimoto disease exhibited of compulsive checking, mysophobia, and excessive hand washing. When these obsessive-compulsive symptoms diminished, she began to suffer from the 'hallucination of soliloquy', the automatic flow of meaningless words inside her mind. As the 'soliloquy' increased, her mood became unstable and she attempted suicide by analgesic ingestion. After this, she was admitted to the psychiatric ward of a general hospital...

54 patients, 24 men and 30 women, (mean age 27 years) were examined. Two types of obsessive-phobic disorders with the phenomena of mysophobia were distinguished: obsession of the external (extracorporal) threat and obsession of contamination. Disorders of the first type (25 cases) were observed in psychopathic-like schizophrenia. They were characterized by a fear of possible contacts with different pathogenic agents--toxic substances, sharp small subjects, bacteria. Obsessions presented with a system of actions preventing phobic situations (rituals)...

Compulsive hand-washing has been well known to the psychiatrists, since Legrand du Saulle described this disorder by the name of "délire du toucher" (1866), which refers to mysophobia or contact-phobia. But its clinical significance seems to have been not fully examined, except from the psychoanalytical point of view, that has observed the repression of sexuality in its pathology. This report presents four cases of compulsive hand-washing, and explores why they exclusively wash their hands. In order to elucidate the reason for their hand-washing and its significance, this report aims to study the relation of following three elements; "Sexuality", "hand" and "touching"...

There is a group of patients who insist as follows: "Someone comes into my room during my absence and removes, conceals or steals my belongings. In addition the intruder sometimes scatters about dirty things." "A young man living just across from my room is always observing me and criticizing my behavior." The others-intruding symptoms like those above are frequently harbored by the female patients of paranoia and schizophrenia. However, these symptoms are rarely seen in male patients. My study shows that fourteen out of fifty-six female employees patients having the paranoic or schizophrenic symptoms had the so-called others-intruding symptoms...

The troublesome symptoms of the seriously defective schizophrenics depend sometimes upon their unexpected sensitive experiences, which are not reported verbally and are guessed merely through the precise observations of the behaviour. By the treatment of the disturbances so found, the troublesome symptoms disappear. As an example of this "behaviour-analytical treatment" an old, defective schizophrenic with incontinence and negativism was introduced in this report, whose background suggested an intensive mysophobia, and was treated successfully...
