This study aimed to explore the potential correlation between atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We enrolled 6540 patients with T2DM who were receiving chronic disease management for hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia in Chengyang District of Qingdao. Among them, 730 had ASCVD (ASCVD group), which 5810 did not (N-ASCVD group). The results showed significantly higher levels of age, blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), systolic blood pressure, ASCVD family history, female proportion, and DR incidence in the N-ASCVD group...

Chest radiography (CR) has been used as a screening tool for lung cancer and the use of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is not recommended in Japan. We need to reconsider whether CR really contributes to the early detection of lung cancer. In addition, we have not well discussed about other major thoracic disease detection by CR and LDCT compared with lung cancer despite of its high frequency. We review the usefulness of CR and LDCT as veridical screening tools for lung cancer and other thoracic diseases...

Cardiovascular-related complications (CVCs) are the primary cause of death in patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD), accounting for greater than half of all deaths. Beyond traditional risk factors, chronic inflammation, extreme oxidative stress (OS), and endothelial dysfunction emerge as major contributors to accelerated CVCs in HD patients. Ample evidence shows that HD patients are constantly exposed to excessive OS, due to uremic toxins and pro-oxidant molecules that overwhelm the defense antioxidant mechanisms...

Childbirth is a stressful event for mothers, and labor epidural analgesia (LEA) may reduce mental stress. Mental stressors include labor pain, fear, and anxiety, which induce oxidative stress. In this study, we focused on oxidative stress during delivery and conducted a cross-sectional analysis of maternal and fetal oxidative stress. The participants included 15 women who received LEA (LEA group) and 15 who did not (No LEA group). Participants with a gestational age of < 37 weeks, BMI of ≥ 35 kg/m2 , cerebrovascular or cardiovascular complications, multiple pregnancies, gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes, chronic hypertension, thyroid disease, birth weight of < 2,500 g, emergency cesarean section, or cases in which epidural anesthesia was re-administered during delivery were excluded from the study...

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory vascular disease that occurs in the intima of large and medium-sized arteries with the immune system's involvement. It is a common pathological basis for high morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases. Abnormal proliferation of apoptotic cells and necrotic cells leads to AS plaque expansion, necrotic core formation, and rupture. In the early stage of AS, macrophages exert an efferocytosis effect to engulf and degrade apoptotic, dead, damaged, or senescent cells by efferocytosis, thus enabling the regulation of the organism...

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Acute inflammation is the body's first defense in response to pathogens or injury. Failure to efficiently resolve the inflammatory insult can severely affect tissue homeostasis, leading to chronic inflammation. Neutrophils play a pivotal role in eradicating infectious pathogens, orchestrating the initiation and resolution of acute inflammation, and maintaining physiological functions. The resolution of inflammation is a highly orchestrated biochemical process, partially modulated by a novel class of endogenous lipid mediators known as specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs)...

Ponatinib is a third-generation BCR::ABL1 tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) with high potency against Philadelphia chromosome (Ph)-positive leukemias, including T315I-mutated disease, which is resistant to first- and second-generation TKIs. Ponatinib was approved for T315I-mutated chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), CML resistant/intolerant to ≥2 prior TKIs, advanced phase CML and Ph-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) where no other TKIs are indicated, and T315I-mutated CML and Ph-positive ALL. The response-based dosing of ponatinib in chronic phase CML (CP-CML) improved treatment tolerance and reduced the risk of toxicities, including cardiovascular risks...

BACKGROUND: The EXPLORE (Evaluating Xience and Left Ventricular Function in PCI on Occlusions After STEMI) trial was the first and only randomized trial investigating chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) early after primary PCI for ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction, compared with medical therapy for the CTO. BACKGROUND: Higher cardiovascular health (CVH) score is associated with lower risks of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality in the general population. However, it is unclear whether cumulative CVH is associated with CVD, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), and death in patients with chronic kidney disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: Among individuals from the prospective CRIC (Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort) Study, we used the percentage of the maximum possible CVH score attained from baseline to the year 5 visit to calculate cumulative CVH score...

BACKGROUND: Data on the incidence of type 2 non-ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction (T2MI) in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 has been limited to single-center studies. BACKGROUND: S100a8/9 (S100 calcium binding protein a8/9) belongs to the S100 family and has gained a lot of interest as a critical regulator of inflammatory response. Our previous study found that S100a8/9 homolog promoted aortic valve sclerosis in mice with chronic kidney disease. However, the role of S100a8/9 in pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy remains unclear. The present study was to explore the role of S100a8/9 in cardiac hypertrophy. METHODS AND RESULTS: Cardiomyocyte-specific S100a9 loss or gain of function was achieved using an adeno-associated virus system, and the model of cardiac hypertrophy was established by aortic banding-induced pressure overload...

BACKGROUND: The development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in about 20%-40% of patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) aggravates cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Pathophysiology is of increasing relevance for individual management and prognosis, though it is largely unknown among T2D patients with CKD as histologic work-up is not routinely performed upon typical clinical presentation. However, as clinical parameters do not appropriately reflect underlying kidney pathology, reluctance regarding timely histologic assessment in T2D patients with CKD should be critically questioned...

BACKGROUND: "Healthy aging" is a major public health challenge, as the prevalence and incidence of diseases are much higher in older people. Among them, diabetes mellitus, hypertension (HTN), and cardiovascular illnesses are the most prevalent chronic ailments. A complete blood count test can give an overall picture of a patient's health status because abnormal counts might indicate the presence of many different types of disease. Using advanced hematology analyzers, a typical microscopic examination of a peripheral blood smear can yield vital information about the clinical state of the patient...

Hypertension is a major risk of morbidity and mortality in patients when it is uncontrolled. In spite of improved therapies currently available for blood pressure control, their complications are far away from being accomplished. Therefore, chronic renal failure is frequently observed in hypertensive patients. Thus, insights on mechanisms that may contribute to arterial pressure control should be studied to prevent life-threatening cardiovascular disorders. Purinergic receptors have been recognized in the physiopathology of hypertension; this review summarizes their participation in the renal abnormalities of the kidney in hypertension...
