Aims: Implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) are an effective primary prevention of sudden cardiac death. We examined whether dual-chamber (DC) ICDs confer a greater benefit than single-chamber (SC) ICDs, and compared the long-term outcomes of recipients of each type of device implanted for primary prevention. Methods and results: Between 2002 and 2012, the DAI-PP registry consecutively enrolled 1258 SC- and 1280 DC-ICD recipients at 12 French medical centres...

Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) is a mitogen that induces proliferation, differentiation, and migration of cells, as well as angiogenesis and carcinogenesis via autocrine or paracrine actions. Fibroblast growth factor 2 expression is abundant in porcine conceptuses and endometrium during the estrous cycle and peri-implantation period of pregnancy. However, its intracellular actions in uterine epithelial cells have not been reported. The results of this study indicated abundant expression of FGFR1 and FGFR2 predominantly in uterine luminal and glandular epithelia during early pregnancy and that their expression decreased with increasing parity of the sows...

An injectable hydrogel system with sustained bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) release ability was developed for vertical bone regeneration at peri-implant sites and enhanced osseointegration of dental implants. In three young male beagle dogs, a pair of defects was created on both sides of the mandibular bone. Next, two implants were transplanted into each defect. In situ gelling polymer solutions with or without BMP-2 were applied to cover the implants and mandibular defects. The effects of the in situ gelling and sustained BMP-2 releasing (IGSR) hydrogel system on peri-implant bone regeneration were evaluated by radiologic examination, micro-computed tomography, and histomorphometric analysis...

PURPOSE: Preclinical and clinical studies have shown that marginal bone loss can be secondary to repeated disconnection and reconnection of abutments that affect the peri-implant mucosal seal. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the impact of abutment disconnections/reconnections on peri-implant marginal bone level changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address this question, two reviewers independently performed an electronic search of three major databases up to October 2015 complemented by manual searches...

PURPOSE: The aim of this noninterventional, retrospective study was to benchmark the outcomes of patients with partial fixed prostheses supported by implants treated at the University of Toronto at least 10 years earlier. A study protocol for assessing outcomes on like patients developed at the University of Bern, Switzerland, was followed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients who had received at least one implant before 2002 were considered eligible to be included in the study (n = 298)...

OBJECTIVES: Implant placement immediately after tooth extraction is often accompanied by resorption of surrounding tissues. A clinical technique was developed where the buccal portion of the root is retained to preserve the periodontal ligament and bundle bone. This technique is based on animal studies showing the potential to preserve the facial tissues utilizing this approach. The purpose of this study was to gain more insight regarding the safety of the technique with regard to biological and implant-related long-term complications and to observe the clinical appearance of the peri-implant tissues...

The freeze-all strategy has emerged as an alternative to fresh embryo transfer (ET) during in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. Although fresh ET is the norm during assisted reproductive therapies (ART), there are many concerns about the possible adverse effects of controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) over the endometrium. The supra-physiologic hormonal levels that occur during a conventional COS are associated with modifications in the peri-implantation endometrium, which may be related to a decrease in pregnancy rates and poorer obstetric and perinatal outcomes when comparing fresh to frozen-thawed embryo transfers...

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether there are some clinical benefits by placing single dental implants either 0.5 or 1.5 mm subcrestally in healed bone crests. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty partially edentulous patients requiring two single implant-supported crowns had both sites randomly allocated either to 0.5 mm or 1.5 mm subcrestal implant placement according to a split-mouth design at six centres. Implants were submerged in aesthetic areas or non-submerged in non-aesthetic areas for 3 months...

Placental transport of vitamin D and other nutrients (e.g. amino acids, fats and glucose) to the fetus is sensitive to maternal and fetal nutritional cues. We studied the effect of maternal calorific restriction on fetal vitamin D status and the placental expression of genes for nutrient transport [aromatic T-type amino acid transporter-1 (TAT-1); triglyceride hydrolase/lipoprotein uptake facilitator lipoprotein lipase (LPL)] and vitamin D homeostasis [CYP27B1; vitamin D receptor (VDR)], and their association with markers of fetal cardiovascular function and skeletal muscle growth...

Fine needle aspirations (FNA) of the breast for primary diagnoses have become less popular in the USA and are usually performed for lesions with low or extremely high clinical suspicion. They are also performed for lesions in close proximity to a breast implant. Liquid-based cytological preparations, such as ThinPrep(®) (TP), provide a practical alternative to clinicians who are performing FNA. Using a selection of cases that represent challenging diagnoses, we describe common diagnostic pitfalls of breast FNA that are specifically associated with this preparation...

The term peri-implantitis is used to describe a destructive inflammatory process affecting the soft and hard tissues around osseo integrated implants, leads to the formation of a peri-implant pocket and loss of supporting bone. Predisposing factors are Poor Plaque Control, inflammation, infection, Smoking, Diabetes and Occlusal Overload. It is diagnosed on the basis of clinical and radiographic interpretation and still no definite criteria have been proposed for the diagnosis and treatment of peri-implantitis...

The ring finger protein PCGF6 (polycomb group ring finger 6) interacts with RING1A/B and E2F6 associated factors to form a non-canonical PRC1 (polycomb repressive complex 1) known as PCGF6-PRC1. Here, we demonstrate that PCGF6-PRC1 plays a role in repressing a subset of PRC1 target genes by recruiting RING1B and mediating downstream mono-ubiquitination of histone H2A. PCGF6-PRC1 bound loci are highly enriched for promoters of germ cell-related genes in mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Conditional ablation of Pcgf6 in ESCs leads to robust de-repression of such germ cell-related genes, in turn affecting cell growth and viability...

BACKGROUND: Laser-microtextured surface (LMS) dental implant collar appears to promote a more tooth-like gingival collagen fiber attachment, which may help to stabilize the peri-implant tissues. The purpose of this systematic review was to assess the clinical effect of LMS on crestal bone level and peri-implant soft tissue response, versus non-LMS collar. METHODS: Electronic and manual literature searches were performed by two independent reviewers for articles written in English up to December 2016...
