Codonopsis lanceolata (Campanulaceae) is a perennial plant commonly known as the bonnet bellflower. This species is widely used in traditional medicine and is considered to have multiple medicinal properties. In this study, we found that shoots and roots of C. lanceolata contained various types of free triterpenes (taraxerol, β-amyrin, α-amyrin, and friedelin) and triterpene acetates (taraxerol acetate, β-amyrin acetate, and α-amyrin acetate). The content of triterpenes and triterpene acetates by GC analysis was higher in the shoot than in the roots...

INTRODUCTION: As a new generation enters the realm of medical education, so do their preferences for technology integration into didactic curricula. An analysis of 106 LCME-accredited medical schools found that 97 percent of programs utilize supplemental e-learning to enhance traditional, face-to-face education in their physical examination curricula. Of these programs, 71 percent produced their multimedia internally. Existing literature indicates medical students benefit from the utilization of multimedia tools and the standardization of the instruction process in the learning of physical examination techniques...

OBJECTIVES: Objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) provide reliable and standardized means for assessing the performance of specific clinical skills. Our previous experience with entrustable professional activity-based multidisciplinary OSCEs suggests that this exercise offers just-in-time baseline information regarding critical intern skills. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic forced medical education programs to reimagine such educational experiences. For the safety of all of the participants, the Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residency programs pivoted from an in-person OSCE to a hybrid model (combination of in-person and virtual encounters) while maintaining the goals of the OSCEs administered in previous years...

BACKGROUND: The overloading of health care systems is an international problem. In this context, new tools such as symptom checker (SC) are emerging to improve patient orientation and triage. This SC should be rigorously evaluated and we can take a cue from the way we evaluate medical students, using objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE) with simulated patients. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a symptom checker versus emergency physicians using OSCEs as an assessment method...

Background The Covid-19 pandemic has posed a challenge to organizing a safe clinical assessment for postgraduate degree candidates completing the residency programmes in various specialties. Although minimizing the risk of Covid-19 transmission is a priority, fulfilling the objectives of the assessment is equally important. Methods We conducted this study in the Department of Internal Medicine at our institute. Instead of physically examining patients, case scenarios that included history, clinical and investigational data of the cardiovascular system (CVS) were presented to the candidates...

The oxidosqualene cyclase family of Rosa rugosa ( RrOSC ) provides a starting point for the triterpenoid pathway, which contributes to the medicinal value of the extraction of tissues of Rosa rugosa . However, the structure and function of key RrOSCs of active triterpenoids remain ambiguous. In this study, a total of 18 RrOSC members with conservative gene structures and motifs were identified based on the genome of Rosa rugosa . The RrOSCs were located on three chromosomes including two gene clusters that derived from gene replication...

The aim of this study is to understand the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on internal medicine education and evaluate the newly introduced methods for education. Fourth-year medical students of 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 academic terms are evaluated in this study. Exam results and feedback scores of students are obtained. Assessment methods in pre-pandemic group are face-to-face written exam and OSCE exam, whereas in post-pandemic group, online written exam and OSCE exam are used...

INTRODUCTION: During placements, there is an opportunity to learn clinical skills and to assess their application. However, it represents two different goals. The validity of an end-of-placement assessment is questionable, as the medical competency is contextual. We decided to evaluate the contribution and limits of different assessment modalities as an end-of-placement assessment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Internal medicine clerks were assessed using the Mini-Cex grid by a structured objective clinical examination (OSCE), a long-case clinical examination (LCE) and a global end-of-placement marking (GEPM)...

OBJECTIVES: The current official model of training in Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) in Spain is based on exposure to experiences through clinical rotations. The main objective was to determine the level of competency (I novice to V independent practitioner) achieved by the residents at the end of the 3rd year of training (R3) in ICM through a simulation-based OSCE. Secondary objectives were: (1) To identify gaps in performance, and (2) To investigate the reliability and feasibility of conducting simulation-based assessment at multiple sites...

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major public health problem, yet residents undergo little formal training and assessment in obesity-related care. Given the recent growth of telehealth, physicians must further learn to apply these skills using a virtual platform. Therefore, we aimed to develop an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) with reliable checklists to assess resident ability to take a patient-centered obesity-focused history that was feasible over telehealth based on published obesity competencies for medical education...

Decision-making in clinical assessment, such as exit-level medical school Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs), is complex. This study utilized an empirical phenomenological qualitative approach with thematic analysis to explore OSCE assessors' perceptions of the concept of a "prototypical intern" expressed during focus group discussions. Topics discussed included the concept of a prototypical intern, qualities to be assessed, and approaches to clinical assessment decision-making. The thematic analysis was then applied to a theoretical framework (Cultural Historical Activity Theory-CHAT) that explored the complexity of making assessment decisions amidst potentially contradicting pressures from academic and clinical perspectives...
