BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Telehealth can improve care for patients with progressive cancer enrolling in hospice. Coordinated telehealth visits (patient/family-hospital-hospice) may improve communication, satisfaction with and interdisciplinary hospice collaboration. This pilot examines the impact of three coordinated telehealth visits on these outcomes. METHODS: This is a prospective pilot study of 0-29-year-old patients with cancer initiating hospice care between 2021-2023...

IMPORTANCE: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) facilitate essential treatment. Failure of these essential devices is frequent and new securement strategies may reduce failure and improve patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical effectiveness of novel PIVC securement technologies for children to reduce catheter failure. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A 3-arm, parallel group, superiority randomized clinical trial was conducted at 2 regional Australian hospitals from February 5, 2020, to January 14, 2022...

Understanding the impact that early psychosocial neglect has on the course of human development has implications for the millions of children around the world who are living in contexts of adversity. In the US, approximately 76% of cases reported to child protective services involve neglect; world-wide, there are more than 150 million orphaned or abandoned children, including 10.5 million orphaned because of COVID-19. In much of the world, children without primary caregivers are reared in institutional settings...

The children's mental health landscape is rapidly changing, and youth with mental health conditions (MHCs) are overrepresented in the child welfare system. Mental health is the largest unmet health need in child welfare, so MHCs may affect the likelihood of system reentry. Concerns regarding mental health contribute to calls for expanded supports, yet systems contact can also generate risk of continued child welfare involvement via surveillance. Still, we know little about how expanded supports at the state-level shape child welfare outcomes...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is a common cause of infant death. We evaluated whether a predictive risk model (PRM) - Hello Baby - which was developed to stratify children by risk of entry into foster care could also identify infants at highest risk of SUID and non-fatal unsafe sleep events. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Cases: Infants with SUID or an unsafe sleep event over 5½ years in a single county. CONTROLS: All births in the same county...

Adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at an increased risk of anxiety and depression compared to peers, but availability of mental health services in IBD clinics does not meet patients' needs, and use of primary care services for mental health screening and care is low. This study provides qualitative data regarding adolescent and caregiver perspectives on addressing mental health in IBD. Interviews were conducted with adolescents with IBD and caregivers of adolescents with IBD. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed for prominent themes...

BACKGROUND: The early years is a critical stage to establish optimal nutrition and movement behaviours. Community playgroups are a relaxed environment for parents with a focus on social connection and supporting parents in their role as 'First Teachers'. Playgroups are therefore an opportunistic setting to promote health behaviours in the early years. To support parents with young children around healthy lifestyle behaviours, the Healthy Conversations @ Playgroup program was delivered in urban and regional areas, across three Australian jurisdictions between 2021-2023...

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Group social skills interventions (GSSIs) versus any comparator on social functioning in children aged 5-12 years with acquired brain injury or cerebral palsy. BACKGROUND: GSSIs are an evidence-based approach to foster social skills development in children with autism spectrum disorder. Currently, limited literature exploring GSSIs in children with acquired brain injury and cerebral palsy is available. IMPORTANCE: There are considerable socioeconomic status (SES) disparities in youth physical activity (PA) levels. For example, studies show that lower-SES youth are less active, have lower participation in organized sports and physical education classes, and have more limited access to PA equipment. OBJECTIVE: To determine the potential public health and economic effects of eliminating disparities in PA levels among US youth SES groups. DESIGN AND SETTING: An agent-based model representing all 6- to 17-year-old children in the US was used to simulate the epidemiological, clinical, and economic effects of disparities in PA levels among different SES groups and the effect of reducing these disparities...

Specialized knowledge and skills applicable to caring for children in foster care include guidelines developed to address this population's special health care needs, cross-system collaboration, and helping families cope with the health impacts of trauma. This paper begins with a review of the special health care needs of children in foster care and relevant guidelines. We discuss different models of health care delivery that can be employed to meet the special health care needs of children in foster care. We then provide examples of two programs employing different models of care that work collaboratively to deliver care to children in foster care in our community...

The China Student Nutrition Improvement Plan (SNIP) covers 40.6 million students in the compulsory education stage, accounting for 42% of all students enrolled in rural compulsory education in 2021. This paper utilizes the county-by-county rollout of the SNIP and estimates the effect of this nutritional intervention on students' cognitive outcomes. We find that SNIP increases math test scores but has a statistically insignificant effect on verbal achievement. The effect is greater for middle school students and children from disadvantaged families...

BACKGROUND: Fathers of children and youth with special healthcare needs (FCYSHCN) are an overlooked population at risk for chronic stress. Mind-body practices offer a patient-centered approach to foster coping and resiliency, yet low engagement from fathers in existing programs suggests adaptation is needed. This multiphase study examines the feasibility of a synchronous, virtual mind-body intervention adapted for FCYSHCN. BACKGROUND: Most young children (0-3 years) attend formal childcare in Denmark, many of them fulltime. Yet recent reports of the quality of Danish childcare centers have shown that in more than one-third of nurseries, the interactions between caregivers and young children (0-3 years) are of "insufficient" quality, which constitutes a risk for affected children's well-being and development. Effective interventions to improve childcare providers' interactive skills are necessary. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, we test the effectiveness of the Caregiver Interaction Profile training, which focuses on improving six core interactive skills: sensitive responsiveness, respecting children's autonomy, structuring and limit setting, verbal communication, developmental stimulation, and fostering positive peer interactions...

Youth in out-of-home care are at high risk for suicide-related thoughts and behaviors (STB), yet there are no known efficacious interventions that reduce STB for this population.
