Superovulation procedures and assisted reproductive technologies have been widely used to treat couples who have infertility problems. Although generally safe, the superovulation procedures are associated with a series of complications, such as ovarian hyper-stimulation syndrome, thromboembolism, and adnexal torsion. The role of long-term repeated superovulation in ovarian aging and especially in associated disorders such as osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases is still unclear. In this study, we sought to determine if repeated superovulation by ten cycles of treatment with pregnant mare serum gonadotropin/human chorionic gonadotropin could affect ovarian reserve, ovarian function, bone density and heart function...

Luteal phase support is mandatory in ovarian stimulation cycles in assisted reproductive technology owing to a deficit in LH pulsatility after the effects of exogenous hCG-used for triggering ovulation-vanish. This is classically accomplished by means of exogenous P administration, but emerging new options include microdoses of hCG and exogenous GnRH agonist. Although luteal phase support is commonly continued for up to 10 weeks into pregnancy, there is accumulating evidence that it can be stopped after the first ultrasound or even after a positive pregnancy test...

The increasing utilization of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist ovulation trigger and the widespread use of artificial cycles for the transfer of frozen-thawed or donated embryos has renewed interest in the luteal phase in assisted reproductive technology. The "luteal phase defect" phenomenon is now understood as a continuum: there is less impairment with milder stimulation than with more intense ovarian stimulation, and less impairment after controlled ovarian stimulation and human chorionic gonadotropin ovulation triggering than after gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist ovulation triggering, the latter being associated with rapid luteolysis...

RESEARCH QUESTION: Are maternal concentrations of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) on a fixed day after embryo transfer associated with duration of pregnancy? DESIGN: A follow-up study of 1917 singleton pregnancies after IVF was performed. Embryos were cultured for 2 days and maternal HCG concentration quantified on day 12 after embryo transfer. Duration of pregnancy was obtained from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Association of HCG concentration (log2-transformed) with duration of pregnancy was estimated as hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) by applying Cox regression proportional hazard models, where time to delivery for pregnancies shortened because of planned Caesarean delivery or induction of labour was treated as censored...

The present study in seasonally breeding spotted snakehead Channa punctatus, for the first time in nonmammalian vertebrates, demonstrated correlation between reproductive phase-dependent testicular expression of ligand Jag1/receptor Notch1 and spermatogenic events. Testicular transcriptome sequencing data from our earlier study in C. punctatus was used in the present study to select the best transcript for jag1 (cpjag1) and notch1 (cpnotch1). The transcripts cpjag1 and cpnotch1 encoded full-length putative proteins of 1215 (cpJag1) and 2475 (cpNotch1) amino acids, respectively...

INTRODUCTION: The main cause of slightly elevated human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) after successful treatment of male germ cell tumors is considered to be pituitary-derived HCG. It is well known that pituitary-derived HCG is frequently detected in postmenopausal women. We evaluated the status of serum HCG in men with elevated gonadotropins, which were induced by androgen deprivation therapy, using commercially available assays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 44 patients with prostate cancer, who underwent luteinizing-hormone releasing hormone agonist treatment...

Progesterone elevation (PE) during the late follicular phase of controlled ovarian stimulation in fresh embryo transfer in vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycles has been claimed to be associated with decreased pregnancy rates. However, the evidence is not unequivocal, and clinicians still have questions about the clinical validity of measuring P levels during the follicular phase of stimulated cycles. We reviewed the existing literature aimed at answering four relevant clinical questions, namely (i) Is gonadotropin type associated with PE during the follicular phase of stimulated cycles? (ii) Is PE on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) associated with negative fresh embryo transfer IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles outcomes in all patient subgroups? (iii) Which P thresholds are best to identify patients at risk of implantation failure due to PE in a fresh embryo transfer? and (iv) Should a freeze all policy be adopted in all the cycles with PE on the day of hCG? The existing evidence indicates that late follicular phase progesterone rise in gonadotropin releasing analog cycles is mainly caused by the supraphysiological stimulation of granulosa cells with exogenous follicle-stimulating hormone...

The polycystic ovary (PCO) syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of anovulatory infertility in women and is associated with several clinical disorders. Despite the great amount of research in the area, mechanisms involved in the genesis of this syndrome remain poorly understood. In a recent issue of Clinical Science (vol. 132, issue 7, 759-776), Wang and colleagues, highlight the important role of overactivated C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP) and natriuretic peptide receptor 2 (CNP/NPR2) system in preventing oocyte maturation and ovulation in PCOS mice model induced by androgen...

Establishing captive breeding populations of amphibians is an important conservation strategy to safeguard against ongoing declines of wild populations and provide broodstock for reintroduction programs. The endangered dusky gopher frog (DGF) has never naturally reproduced in captivity and requires breeding intervention to sustain the population. Methods for inducing ovulation in female DGFs using hormone therapies have not been evaluated. To address this need, we tested four exogenous hormone treatments to induce ovulation in DGFs ( n = 11/treatment), including: treatment (A) gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa); (B) GnRHa with dopamine antagonist metoclopramide hydrochloride; (C) GnRHa and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and (D) GnRHa with hCG following two low hCG priming doses...

OBJECTIVE: Methotrexate is an alternative treatment for tubal pregnancy. However, despite initial treatment, ∼15% of women eventually require surgery. This study aimed to identify the risk factors for medical treatment failure in tubal pregnancy and apply them to a risk prediction model. STUDY DESIGN: This single-center retrospective cohort study included 123 participants initially treated medically for tubal pregnancy between January 2006 and December 2015. Logistic regression analysis was used to construct a risk prediction model (visually presented as a nomogram) for medical treatment failure...
