This study compares the effects of inducing ovulation using human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) or gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) at the end of a 5-day progesterone(P4)-based protocol for fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) in lactating dairy cows on ovarian dynamics and fertility. A P4 intravaginal device (PRID) was fitted for five days and GnRH administered upon PRID insertion and a double dose (24 h apart) of prostaglandin F2α upon PRID removal. Cows received either GnRH (GnRH group; n = 98), 1000 IU hCG (hCG-1 group; n = 97), or 3000 IU hCG (hCG-2 group; n = 104) 36 h after PRID removal and were inseminated 50-56 h after PRID removal...

Cervical cancer is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). The disease develops over many years through a series of precancerous lesions. Cervical cancer can be prevented by HPV-vaccination, screening and treatment of precancer before development of cervical cancer. The treatment of high-grade cervical dysplasia (CIN(2+)) has traditionally been by cervical conization. Surgical procedures are associated with increased risk of undesirable side effects including bleeding, infection, scarring (stenosis), infertility and complications in later pregnancies...

Progestin-primed ovarian stimulation (PPOS) protocol has recently been demonstrated to be an novel regimen for preventing premature LH surges during controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) in combination with frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET). Our prospective controlled study was to explore the effect of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) contained in human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG) on the clinical outcomes in normalovulatory women undergoing COH with PPOS. A total of 180 patients were allocated into three groups according to the gonadotropin (Gn) used: group A (human menopausal gonadotropin, hMG-A), group B (hMG-B) or group C (follicle stimulating hormone, FSH)...

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether in a modified natural cycle (modified-NC) for a frozen-thawed single euploid blastocyst transfer, a critical LH value, above which human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration should be avoided, may be defined. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-seven patients underwent modified natural cycle in order to transfer a single frozen-thawed euploid blastocyst. All embryos were obtained by intracytoplasmic sperm injection and were biopsied at the blastocyst stage and analyzed by means of array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH)...

Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy. It is becoming more common, but it can lead to uterine rupture and severe hemorrhage. Here, we report a case of a 37-year-old woman with CSP complicated with pseudoaneurysm. The pseudoaneurysm emerged following focal injection of methotrexate (MTX) and potassium chloride with systemic MTX treatment. Due to a risk of sudden bleeding, uterine artery embolization (UAE) was recommended, but the patient hoped to avoid this if possible. Because the serum human chorionic gonadotropin level and the gestational sac were still persistent, dilation and curettage were performed with interventional radiologists on standby...

We present a case of persistent trophoblast tissue (PT) five weeks after salpingectomy for tubal pregnancy. The fallopian tube-sparing method (salpingotomy) has a greater risk of PT than removal of the whole fallopian tube (salpingectomy) has. A 32-year-old woman was treated with salpingectomy on suspicion of a bleeding ectopic pregnancy and was readmitted due to PT. There is no evidence for measuring the human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) level as routine follow-up after salpingectomy, but it is important to be aware of the risk of PT and if in doubt measure the levels of hCG...

The human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) test represents a key step in assessing Leydig cell function in prepubertal males, but differences in terms of hCG doses, number of injections, and sequence of blood drawing are published in the literature, showing poor standardization. The few available data in healthy boys are summarized here. A recombinant hCG (rhCG) formulation might permit overcoming some controversies as well as avoid the potential biological risk related to the injection of extractive hormones. Studies in humans are scarce, but they indicate that 250 µg rhCG in a single dose may represent a useful scheme for the dynamic evaluation of Leydig cell function in children as well as in adults...

Testosterone (T) concentration is a useful indicator of reproductive function in male animals. However, T concentration is not usually measured in veterinary clinics, partly due to the unavailability of reliable and rapid assays for animal samples. In this study, a rapid chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay system (CLEIA system) that was developed for the measurement of T concentration in humans use was validated for stallion blood samples. First, serum T concentrations were measured using the CLEIA system and compared with those measured by a fluoroimmunoassay that has been validated for use in stallions...

In this work, a Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC) platform is used to electromagnetically actuate magnetic bead chains for an enhanced immunoassay. Custom-made electromagnets generate a magnetic field to form, rotate, lift and lower the magnetic bead chains (MBCs). The cost-effective, disposable LOC platform was made with a polymer substrate and an on-chip electrochemical sensor patterned via the screen-printing process. The movement of the MBCs is controlled to improve the electrochemical signal up to 230% when detecting beta-type human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG)...

The purpose of this review is to analyze current medical strategies in the prevention of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) during ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization. Owing to contemporary preventive measures of OHSS, the incidence of moderate and severe forms of the syndrome varies between 0.18% and 1.40%. Although none of medical strategies is completely effective, there is high-quality evidence that replacing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists after GnRH antagonists and moderate- quality evidence that GnRH antagonist protocols, dopamine agonists and mild protocols reduce the occurrence of OHSS...

A high concentration of copper is a hazardous element to organisms and human health. Although various strategies have been reported for the sensitive detection of copper, a facile and rapid detection of aqueous copper has seldom been addressed to date. Here, we present an easy and accessible colorimetric method to detect Cu(2+) using the redispersion of cysteamine-modified gold nanoparticles (CA-AuNPs). Initially, CA caused the aggregation of AuNPs due to the electrostatic interaction and aggregated AuNPs can be regenerated in basic medium...

The role of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the regulation of molecular genetics factors determining the functional activity of human naïve and memory T cells in vitro was studied. It was found that hCG (10 and 100IU/ml) inhibited CD28 and CD25 expression on the naïve T cells (CD45RA+) and CD25 expression on the memory T cells (CD45R0+). hCG didn't affect the CD71 proliferation marker expression in total. Nevertheless, hCG reduced the percentage of proliferating memory T cells with simultaneous suppression of CD71 expression on proliferating CD45R0+cells...
