The relationships among depression, anxiety, and quality of life were tested, as were the effects of age, gender, and pain frequency on these variables in children (n = 44) and adolescents (n = 31) with sickle cell disease. Participants completed the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (ROADS) and the Pediatric Quality of Life (PedQL Generic Model). The mean and standard deviation for summary RCADS scores for the majority of participants were below the clinical thresholds of T < 65, indicating low risk for depression (n = 65; 89...

We report the coexistence of stress-bearing percolation with arrested phase separation in a colloidal system of thermoresponsive nanoemulsions spanning a broad range of volume fractions (0.10 ≤ ϕ ≤ 0.33) and temperatures (22 °C ≤ T ≤ 65 °C). Here, gelation is driven by short-range interdroplet polymer bridging at elevated temperatures. Direct visualization of the gel microstructure shows that nanoemulsions undergo a homogenous percolation transition prior to phase separation. Rheological characterization shows that both the percolated and the phase separated structures are capable of supporting a significant amount of elastic stress...

The main components of the mitochondrial genome of the marine polychaete, Perinereis nuntia, were initially obtained from the assembled expressed sequence tags by GS-FLX sequencer. After several cycles of polymerase chain reaction with genomic DNA, the complete mitochondrial genome of P. nuntia was obtained with 15,817 bp in length including 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two rRNA genes, and 22 tRNA genes with the same contents and order as shown in previous studies on other annelids. Some PCGs shared nucleotides with neighboring genes, and all 13 PCGs started with ATG as a start codon...

The heterosite phase occurring in a pegmatitic rock sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction, by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The orthorhombic unit-cell parameters, expressed in Å, were found as a=9.733 (1), b=5.837 (1) and c=4.776 (1). The composition was determined to be (Fe(0.54)Mn(0.43)Mg(0.04))PO(4). Mössbauer spectra recorded at temperatures T of 65 K and higher consist of two broadened quadrupole doublets. Their isomer shifts δ are both diagnostic for the ferric state...

In the present study, the authors explored the meaning of low scores on the MMPI-2/MMPI-2-RF restructured clinical (RC) scales. Using responses of a sample of university students (N = 811), the authors examined whether low (T < 39), within-normal-limits (T = 39-64), and high (T > 65) score levels on the RC scales are differentially associated with multidimensional personality questionnaire (MPQ)-defined personality descriptions. Eleven primary MPQ scales and three higher order MPQ scales (negative emotionality, positive emotionality, and constraint) were used to yield these descriptions...

The lack of availability of continuing medical education programs on tobacco dependence for psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses is profound. We developed a 2-day curriculum delivered in November 2006 and March 2007 to 71 participants. Ninety-three percent ( n = 66) completed a pretest/posttest, and 91% (n = 65) completed the attitudes and beliefs survey. Scores on the pretest were low (M = 47% correct). Paired t tests found significant increases in raw scores from 6.7 to 13.6, t(65) = -22.8, p < .0001. More than 90% of psychiatrists and nurses indicated that motivating and helping patients to stop smoking and discussing smoking behavior were part of their professional role...

Previous studies suggest adverse effects of arsenic exposure on children's cognitive function. In this study, we examined the potential association between arsenic exposure and children's behavior. Five hundred and twenty-six children, 6-7 years old, living near a metal foundry in Torreón, Mexico, participated in the study. Arsenic exposure was measured as total urinary arsenic (UAs) and arsenic metabolites-monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) concentrations. Children's behavior was assessed by Conners Behavior Rating Scales for parents and teachers...
