AIM: To study mental disorders in patients with breast cancer (BC) at different stages of the disease taking into account premorbid characteristics and psychosomatic correlations in their development. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 82 patients with histologically confirmed BC. The first group consisted of 30 patients (mean age 49.7±11.1 years) with the first established diagnosis of BC and mental disorders caused by somatic disease (ICD-10 F40-F48, stress-related neurotic and somatoform disorders)...

AIM: To investigate affective pathology in patients with adolescent bulimia nervosa (BN) and to analyze comorbid mutual influences of these clinical entities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample consisted of 52 young female patients, aged from 13.9 to 17.4 years, who simultaneously meet ICD-10 criteria of F50.2 - typical BN and F30-F39 - mood disorders. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the Beck Depression Inventory were used for psychometric assessment. Duration of follow-up ranged from 1 to 7 years...

Based on the conception of correlations between independent endogenous factors (positive and negative disorders), the author present a psychopathological model of psychosomatic (hypochondriac) symptoms in deficit disturbances, comorbid with the changes of «verschroben» type, observed in general medical practice. The psychosomatic symptoms are represented by a wide range of symptom complexes (from idiopathic pain and conversions to restricted hypochondria, organ neuroses, encapsulated organ psychosis) and defined as a syndrome of endoform of somaticized disorders...

Skin substitutes for repair of dermal wounds are deficient in functional elastic fibres. We report that the content of insoluble elastin in the dermis of cultured human skin can be increased though the use of two approaches that enhance elastogenesis by dermal fibroblasts, forced expression of versican variant V3, which lacks glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chains, and forced expression of versican antisense to decrease levels of versican variant V1 with GAG chains. Human dermal fibroblasts transduced with V3 or anti-versican were cultured under standard conditions over a period of 4 weeks to produce dermal sheets, with growth enhanced though multiple seedings for the first 3 weeks...

The suitability of the ovine forestomach matrix (OFM) for the treatment of recalcitrant wounds was evaluated in 19 patients. At 12 weeks, 50% of wounds had closed, and the average reduction in surface area was 73.4%. Promising outcomes of this initial series support the clinical consideration of OFM.

Basing on the peculiarities of psychopathological presentations and dynamics of disease in 253 patients with an ICD-10 diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder (F25), the authors argue for the diagnostic validity of this disease. Schizoaffective psychosis (SAP) is considered in the context of endoform schizophrenic reaction in people with schizotypal personality with signs of reactive lability. In the dynamics of a schizoaffective episode, this reaction is formed in the period, but not in the structure, of endogenous phasic affective disorders and emerges itself as psychotic symptoms characteristic of schizophrenia which are independent from circulatory affective symptoms pathogenetically and pathokinetically...

This is a report on 112 patients with endoformic syndromes associated with senile dementia, including 27 patients with a history of schizophrenia from young age. The initial stages of senile dementia were shown to be characterized by deepening of the endogenous productive symptomatology and by a reduction of some other manifestations of the endogenous process, in particular, the waning of specific personality changes. Complex productive psychoses occurring in pronounced dementia are also described.

The authors analyzed clinical and genealogical findings about the psychopathological aggravation of heredity in patients with reactive psychoses. The data were collected by studying a familial history in an epidemiological forensic-psychiatric sample of psychogenic psychoses. A conclusion is made about genetic heterogeneity of psychogenic paranoids and psychogenic depressions as well as hysterical and endoformic psychogenic psychoses on the whole.

The paper describes the psychiatric status on the basis of 76 patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome. There is considerable difference between the different stages of the disease. The disorders are divided into groups following the German and French psychopathological tradition, where the incidence is dependent on the underlying complaint. 50% of the patients suffered from chronic psychoorganic disorders (34% organic personality disorders, 16% dementia). 9% suffered from an acute psychosis caused by complications and founded on substantial physical illness...

Multiple sclerosis lesions may occur predominantly in the hemispheric white matter and cause various psychiatric disorders such as remitting-relapsing endoform or exogenous psychosis, organic personality alterations and dementia. Nineteen patients suffering from this encephalitic form of multiple sclerosis as diagnosed by characteristic CSF immunoglobulin findings are analysed according to established psychopathological criteria. All cases began with psychiatric symptoms and neurological signs were either absent or overlooked...

A clinico-pathological follow-up of mentally ill patients of the Rheinische Landesklinik Düsseldorf between 1960 and 1984 revealed intracranial space-occupying processes in 47 of 1023 post mortem examinations (4.6%). 9 of the 47 cases (19%) were meningiomas. 5 patients of those clinically not diagnosed as having meningioma had signs of raised intracranial pressure at post mortem, in 4 others the meningioma was in incidental finding of presumably lacking clinical significance. 4 other meningioma patients were diagnosed while alive; 2 of them were operated on the tumor...

The effects of LSD are characterized by a number of disturbances of perception and experience, which can be observed in the fields of visual, spatial and temporal perception and of affectivity. We also see disturbances of experience, which can otherwise be observed only in psychoses, for example reduction or change of cognitive functions, but also depersonalization and euphoria. In atypical courses of intoxication ("horror-trips") anxiety and excitement are predominant. Atypical courses of intoxication may be interrupted by "talk down" and additional application of tranquilizers...

A clinical study of 50 patients with late schizophrenia and 150 with senile dementia demonstrated an involvement of the endogenous predisposition in the origin of schizoform psychoses in senile dementia, as well as close relation of these psychoses with atrophic processes. The author suggests that a slowly developing atrophic process creates specific, especially favourable conditions for the accomplishment of the endogenous predisposition in some cases and for the exacerbation and depending on the already existing endogenous disturbances in other cases...

As a result of a clinico-psychopathological study of atherosclerotic hallucinatory-paranoid (endoform) psychoses the author eliminated 3 syndromological forms: 1) hallucinatory, 2) paranoid, 3) paranoid with their clinical variants. according to their development and clinical expression the endoform hallucinatory-paranoid psychoses are differentiated into acute transitory (exogenous type of reaction) and chronic progressive. Clinico-anotomical correlations demonstrated that of acute psychoses large focal changes are more typical, while of chronic--multiple small foci--brain lesions...

The author conducted a clinico-statistical and follow up study, related to the development of a clinical shaping, courese and outcome of reactive psychoses in individuals with brain traumas. The data gave grounds to eliminate 2 main groups of psychogenic reactions: hysterical and endoform. The former developed on the personality-charactegenic level and developed more moderately. Endoform reactive psychses appeared on a more profound personality--vital level and had a more severe course with a worse prognosis...
