We present a mass spectrometry-based method for the identification of cis and trans double-bond isomers within intact complex lipid mixtures using electron impact excitation of ions from organics (EIEIO) mass spectrometry. EIEIO involves irradiating singly charged lipid ions with electrons having kinetic energies of 5-16 eV. The resulting EIEIO spectra can be used to discern cis and trans double-bond isomers by virtue of the differences in the fragmentation patterns at the carbon-carbon single bonds neighboring the double bonds...

A series of gold(I) and gold(III) complexes containing bulky bis-N,N'-(9-alkylfluorenyl) heterocyclic carbene ((R) F-NHC) ligands have been prepared in high yields from appropriate imidazolinium, imidazolium and benzimidazolium salts. In all complexes, the carbene ligand provides high steric protection of the Au-X bond trans to the carbenic C atom. Irrespective of the metal oxidation state, the complexes showed high efficiency in a tandem 3,3-rearrangement/Nazarov reaction of an enynyl acetate. One of the Au(III) complexes, [AuCl3 ((R) F-NHC)], was further found to be suitable for the efficient cyclisation of a propargylcarboxamide...

Prompt γ-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich ^{96}Kr, produced in transfer- and fusion-induced fission reactions, has been performed using the combination of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array and the VAMOS++ spectrometer. A second excited state, assigned to J^{π}=4^{+}, is observed for the first time, and a previously reported level energy of the first 2^{+} excited state is confirmed. The measured energy ratio R_{4/2}=E(4^{+})/E(2^{+})=2.12(1) indicates that this nucleus does not show a well-developed collectivity contrary to that seen in heavier N=60 isotones...

Measurements of the cross section for producing b quarks in the reaction pp→bb[over ¯]X are reported in 7 and 13 TeV collisions at the LHC as a function of the pseudorapidity η in the range 2<η<5 covered by the acceptance of the LHCb experiment. The measurements are done using semileptonic decays of b-flavored hadrons decaying into a ground-state charmed hadron in association with a muon. A modified Bouveault-Blanc reduction has been developed for the synthesis of α,α-dideuterio alcohols from carboxylic acid esters. Sodium dispersions are used as the electron donor in this electron transfer reaction, and ethanol-d1 is employed as the deuterium source. This reaction uses stable, cheap, and commercially available reagents, is operationally simple, and results in excellent deuterium incorporation across a broad range of aliphatic esters, which provides an attractive alternative to reactions mediated by expensive pyrophoric alkali metal deuterides...

Targeted mass spectrometry of a surrogate peptide panel is a powerful method to study the dynamics of protein networks, but chromatographic time scheduling remains a major limitation for dissemination and implementation of robust and large multiplexed assays. We unveil a Multiple Reaction Monitoring method (Scout-MRM) where the use of spiked scout peptides triggers complex transition lists, regardless of the retention time of targeted surrogate peptides. The interest of Scout-MRM method regarding the retention time independency, multiplexing capability, reproducibility, and putative interest in facilitating method transfer was illustrated by a 782-peptide-plex relative assay targeting 445 proteins of the phytopathogen Dickeya dadantii during plant infection...

Human disturbance can affect animal life history and even population dynamics. However, the consequences of these disturbances are difficult to measure. This is especially true for hibernating animals, which are highly vulnerable to disturbance, because hibernation is a process of major physiological changes, involving conservation of energy during a resource-depleted time of year. Valuable 1-azabicycloalkane derivatives have been synthesized through a novel gold(I)-catalyzed desulfonylative cyclization strategy. An ammoniumation reaction of ynones substituted at the 1-position with an N-sulfonyl azacycle took place in the presence of a gold cation by intramolecular cyclization of the disubstituted sulfonamide moiety onto the triple bond. Depending on the size of the heterocyclic ring and substitution of the substrates, two unprecedented forms of nucleophilic attack on the sulfonyl group were exploited, that is, a N-desulfonylation in the presence of an external protic O nucleophile (37-87 %, 10 examples) and a unique N-to-O 1,5-sulfonyl migration (60-98 %, 9 examples)...

An acid-fast, rapidly growing, rod-shaped microorganism designated 8WA6 was isolated from a lake in Algiers, Algeria. The lake water was characterized by a temperature of 18 °C, a pH of 7.82, a copper concentration of 8.6 µg/L, and a cadmium concentration of 0.6 µg/L. New energetic compounds are designed to minimize their potential environmental impacts, which includes their transformation and the fate and effects of their transformation products. The nitro groups of energetic compounds are readily reduced to amines, and the resulting aromatic amines are subject to oxidation and coupling reactions. Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is a common environmental oxidant and model system for kinetic studies of aromatic amine oxidation. In this study, a training set of new and previously reported kinetic data for the oxidation of model and energetic-derived aromatic amines was assembled and subjected to correlation analysis against descriptor variables that ranged from general purpose [Hammett σ constants (σ(-)), pKas of the amines, and energies of the highest occupied molecular orbital (EHOMO)] to specific for the likely rate-limiting step [one-electron oxidation potentials (Eox)]...

Polysubstituted pyrrolin-4-ones have been efficiently synthesized from readily available 1-(N-sulfonylazetidin-2-yl) ynones via gold(I)-catalyzed cyclization/nucleophilic substitution in the presence of various nucleophiles, such as water, alcohols, or indoles. Additionally, 3-iodopyrrolin-4-one derivatives have also been obtained under the same reaction conditions upon addition of 1.2 equiv of N-iodosuccinimide.
