BACKGROUND AND AIM: Non-specific isolated terminal ileum abnormalities (NSITIA) namely erosions, ulcer and nodularity are frequent findings on ileal examination during colonoscopy. Their clinical significance and management are uncertain. METHODOLOGY: A pilot randomized clinical trial comparing combination antimicrobial therapy (oral Rifaximin 550 mg twice daily for two weeks; Albendazole 400 mg orally as a single dose; Tinidazole 1 gm twice daily for three days i...

Lactobacilli, play a beneficial role in the female reproductive tract (FRT), regulating pH via lactic acid metabolism to help maintain a healthy environment. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is characterized by a dysregulated flora in which anaerobes such as Gardnerella vaginalis ( Gardnerella ) create a less acidic environment. Current treatment focuses on antibiotic administration, including metronidazole, clindamycin, or tinidazole; however, lack of patient compliance as well as antibiotic resistance may contribute to 50% recurrence within a year...

The negative consequences of Substandard and falsified (SF) medicines are widely documented nowadays and there is still an urgent need to find them in more efficient ways. Several screening tools have been developed for this purpose recently. In this study, three screening tools were used on 292 samples of ciprofloxacin and metronidazole collected in Cameroon. Each sample was then analyzed by HPLC and disintegration tests. Seven additional samples from the nitro-imidazole (secnidazole, ornidazole, tinidazole) and the fluoroquinolone (levofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, moxifloxacin) families were analyzed to mimic falsified medicines...

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common dysbiosis of the human vaginal microbiota characterized by depletion of hydrogen peroxide and lactic acid-producing Lactobacillus bacteria and an overgrowth of certain facultative anaerobic bacteria. Although short-term cure rates following treatment with frontline antibiotics (most notably oral metronidazole (MNZ), clindamycin vaginal cream, and MNZ vaginal gel) are generally high, longer term recurrence rates are an issue. The development of vaginal formulations offering continuous/sustained administration of antibiotic drugs over one or more weeks might prove useful in reducing recurrence...

Infections by Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) lead to considerable morbidity and mortality worldwide and treatment is reliant on a single class of drugs, nitroimidazoles. Treatment failures and intermittent reports of relapse from different parts of world indicate towards development of clinical drug resistance. In the present study, susceptibility testing of clinical isolates of E. histolytica was carried against metronidazole and tinidazole. Additionally, anti-amoebic property of active compounds of Andrographis paniculata was also evaluated...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Efficacy of Helicobacter pylori (H . pylori ) eradication is related to the local antimicrobial resistance epidemiology. We aimed to investigate the antibiotic resistance of H. pylori in Fujian, China. METHODS: H. pylori -infected patients in four centers were enrolled in the study from Oct 2019 to Jan 2022. The bacteria were isolated, cultured and identified from the biopsy of patients' gastric mucosa samples. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by a modified broth microdilution method for H...

Tinidazole plus an appropriate probiotic therapy, including Lactobacillus reuteri and vitamin D, proved to be effective in the condition. The liver plays a very important role in physiological processes of the human body. Liver regeneration has developed into an important area of study in liver disease. The Mtz (metronidazole)/NTR (nitroreductase)-mediated cell ablation system has been widely used to study the processes and mechanisms of liver injury and regeneration. However, high concentrations and toxic side effects of Mtz severely limit the application of the Mtz/NTR system. Therefore, screening new analogs to replace Mtz has become an important means to optimize the NTR ablation system...

Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted reproductive tract pathogen of men and women. M. genitalium infections are increasingly difficult to treat due to poor efficacy of doxycycline and acquired resistance to azithromycin and moxifloxacin. A recent clinical trial suggested that metronidazole may improve cure rates for women with pelvic inflammatory disease and reduced the detection of M. genitalium when included with standard doxycycline plus ceftriaxone treatment. As data regarding susceptibility of mycoplasmas to nitroimidazoles are lacking in the scientific literature, we determined the in vitro susceptibility of 10 M...

Bacterial nitroreductase enzymes that convert prodrugs to cytotoxins are valuable tools for creating transgenic targeted ablation models to study cellular function and cell-specific regeneration paradigms. We recently engineered a nitroreductase ("NTR 2.0") for substantially enhanced reduction of the prodrug metronidazole, which permits faster cell ablation kinetics, cleaner interrogations of cell function, ablation of previously recalcitrant cell types, and extended ablation paradigms useful for modelling chronic diseases...

In this study, highly fluorescent sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (SN-CQDs) were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method using thiosemicarbazide and citric acid as starting materials. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were applied to characterize the prepared SN-CQDs. The synthesized SN-CQDs' maximum fluorescence emission was obtained at 430 nm after excitation at 360 nm. Rifampicin (RFP), tinidazole (TNZ), ornidazole (ONZ), and metronidazole (MNZ) all quantitatively and selectively quenched the SN-CQDs' native fluorescence, which was the base-for their-spectrofluorimetric estimation without the need for any tedious pre-treatment steps or high-cost instrumentation...

In this study, octanoic acid (OA) was used as an extraction solvent for the pre-concentration and determination of three antibiotic drugs (levofloxacin, metronidazole, and tinidazole) in urine samples. To extract the antibiotic drugs, a green solvent was used as the extraction solvent in the continuous sample drop flow microextraction method, followed by a high-performance liquid chromatography photodiode array detector. According to the findings, the present study offers an environmentally friendly analytical method with a high capacity for the microextraction of the antibiotic drugs at very low concentrations...

It is shown that in aqueous buffer media, Co(III)-coproporphyrin I, unlike Zn(II)-coproporphyrin I, binds two imidazole derivatives, and the stability of mono-axial Co-coproporphyrin imidazole complexes is two to three orders of magnitude higher than that of similar complexes of Zn-coproporphyrin I...

This paper describes the recognition process of tetrahedral [CuII (tnz)2 X2 ] (X = Cl, Br) complexes by a DNA chain, analyzing the specific interaction between the DNA bases and backbone with the metal and the tinidazole (tnz) ligand. We identified the coordination of the copper metal center with one or two phosphates as the first recognition site for the tinidazole copper(II) complexes, while the ligands present partial intercalation into the minor groove. Also, we discuss a novel trigonal copper(I) tnz bromide complex, obtained by reducing the previously reported [Cu(tnz)2 Br2 ]...
