OBJECTIVES: To report our experience with endourologic methods in the treatment of pyeloureteral stenosis in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From July 2004, 7 patients from 9 months to 15 years old with pyeloureteral junction stenosis (PUJ) diagnosis underwent endourologic repair. An endourological dilatation was made under radioscopic control. The procedures consist of an initial cystoscopy with a retrograde placement of catheter (4 or 5 Fr) and the guide wire (0,014''-or 0,035'')...

OBJECTIVES: To report our experience with laparoscopic pyeloplasty in the treatment of pyeloureteral junction obstruction. METHODS: Between August 2001 and August 2004 14 patients with the diagnosis of pyeloureteral junction obstruction underwent laparoscopic repair. Seven cases had the obstruction on the left side and the other seven on the right side. We describe the technique of laparoscopic dismembered Anderson-Hynes type pyeloplasty, performed to 12 patients in our series...

BACKGROUND: Prenatal diagnosis of renal pyelectasis usually involves postnatal studies to determine whether treatment is necessary or not. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence of fetal pyelectasis in our environment, to review our postnatal management protocol, and to review definitive diagnoses. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We performed a retrospective review of newborns with a prenatal diagnosis of pyelectasis. The variables recorded included prenatal ultrasound examinations, gestational age, sex, anthropometric data, postnatal study (ultrasound, cystography, isotopic renogram) and indication for antibiotic prophylaxis...

Endometriosis is a biologically benign albeit aggressive pathology marked by high local recurrences. Ureteral involvement accounts for only a minority of cases (0.1-0.4%) with often non-specific symptoms at clinical presentation and difficult preoperative diagnosis. Thirteen cases of severe ureteral endometriosis (i.e. causing significant obstruction to the urinary flow) were observed and surgically treated, out of 17 ureteral units affected (three cases of bilateral involvement, one case of complete pyeloureteral duplicity)...

The aim of this study was to present our experience of using four minimally invasive methods in treatment of pyeloureteral stenosis by percutaneous access. Fifty patients underwent different percutaneous operative procedures: the Korth's method, endopyeloureterotomy, the Fenger's plastic, and laparoscopic dismembered pyeloplasty. We classified results into 3 groups (outcome good, outcome intermediate, and outcome poor), depending on clinical improvement and the ultrasonography and diuretic renography findings six months after the operation...

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility of Multislice spiral CT (MSCT) with volume rendering (VR) and maximum intensity projection (MIP) reconstructions in recognizing ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with UPJO underwent MSCT. To visualise the excretory system, 50 ml of uroangiografic contrast medium was administered by drip infusion via the cubital vein 180 minutes before the CT scan. MSCT was performed after the injection of 120 ml of contrast medium at a flow rate of 3...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficiency of magnetic resonance urography (MRU) in pediatric urology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report retrospectively on 12 children who underwent MRU between January 1999 and November 2001. MRU was performed to accurately evaluate the entire urinary tract because of megaureter, ectopic ureter, vesicoureteral reflux, Y-inverted duplication and hydronephrosis because of pyeloureteral stenosis. T1- and T2-weighted images were obtained in the coronal, sagittal and axial planes...

REVIEW

Ureteral valves together with stenosis and diverticula represent congenital malformations of the ureteral tract between the pyeloureteral junction and the ureterovesical junction. They are rare malformations and even more rarely they cause an obstacle to urine flow. The proximal subjejunal ureteral tract is more frequently involved. The most reliable pathogenetic hypotheses suggest a delay in the canalization of fetal ureter or an ischemic damage. The true ureteral valves should be distinguished from Ostling embryonic folds that can be documented in 5% of newborns and disappear with growth...

INTRODUCTION: Under the actual controversy about the management of hydronephrosis for ureteropelvic junction obstruction, our objective has been to evaluate the indications and the effects of pyeloplasty as therapeutic option. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have reviewed the charts of patients who underwent pyeloplasty, in special concerns at the preoperatory study and the postoperatory control by means of differential renal function (DRF) and half-time drainage (T1/2) on curves of Tc99m MAG3 diuretic renogram, and the effects in the body growth...

Over a 5-year period, 346 helical computed tomographic (CT) studies were performed in renal transplant recipients. Helical CT proved useful in this context by depicting parenchymal, perirenal, renal sinus, pyeloureteral, and vascular complications in great detail. CT often delineates fluid collections and their anatomic relationship to adjacent structures better than ultrasonography (US), particularly in obese patients. CT-guided puncture and drainage can be performed in cases in which US is deemed inadequate...

A young female patient underwent ureteral resection and Hynes-Anderson pyeloureteroplasty because of pyeloureteral junction stenosis and a ureteral valve (UV), which caused hydronephrosis. Despite using ultrasonography and intravenous urography the ureteral valve was observed only on exploration. UV should be considered as a possible cause of upper urinary tract obstruction; retrograde urography can be essential.

The obstruction of the pielo-ureteral junction, in most of the cases, recognizes an intrinsic etiopathogenesis, the presence of a segment ureteral aperistaltic and alteration of the ureteral musculature. The association of GPU stenosis and the presence of vascular anomalous shanks are frequent. The knowledge of this anatomical situation is important for choosing the therapeutic strategy and the surgical technique. The pre-operative diagnosis of the anomalous vase could condition the choice of the technique (endoscopic technique, laparoscopic), opting for open surgery to have a better control of the vascular shank...
