OBJECTIVE: We wished to evaluate the feasibility of colon lavage cytology using an orally administered balanced electrolyte solution. METHODS: Thirty-three patients undergoing colonoscopy for suspected colorectal cancer were entered into the study. Fifteen of these patients eventually had pathological confirmation of colorectal cancer, and one patient had prostatic adenocarcinoma with invasion of the rectum. The other 17 patients had no colonoscopic evidence of neoplasm and therefore served as controls...

Colyte and Colyte-flavored are effective in preparing the bowel for endoscopic examination, particularly when used in combination with saline and stimulant laxatives, which may decrease the volume of Colyte required for optimal bowel cleansing.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of the Hemoccult and Gastroccult tests (SmithKline Diagnostics) to detect blood in vitro in whole-bowel irrigation (WBI) solution. INTERVENTIONS: One tablet of ferrous gluconate 324 mg, ferrous sulfate 325 mg, or ascorbic acid 500 mg; or one Materna prenatal vitamin tablet (Lederle Laboratories) was dissolved in 30 mL of Colyte. Colyte alone and each test solution were tested with Hemoccult and Gastroccult slides, then retested at pH values of 3 and 8...

We prospectively studied 26 patients receiving simethicone (n = 14) or placebo (n = 12) in Colyte (Edlaw Preparations. Inc., Farmingdale, NY, U.S.A.) to determine if the addition of simethicone could improve visibility when administered the night before colonoscopy. Two parameters of visibility were assessed: amount of bubbles and degree of haziness. The effectiveness of a night-prior administration of Colyte to clean the colon of feculent debris was also examined. Patients receiving simethicone had significantly less bubbles (p less than 0...

Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) catalyzes the formation of putrescine from ornithine, which is the first step in the pathway of mammalian polyamine biosynthesis. Tissue activity levels of ODC have been suggested to be a marker of risk for colorectal cancer in hereditary polyposis and in adenoma formers. We analyzed ODC activity in rectal and sigmoid colon mucosal biopsies obtained at 10 cm and at 30 cm in 40 healthy, colon cancer risk factor-free adults following three endoscopic preparation regimens: 1) no special preparation; 2) two phosphate enemas; and 3) "Colyte" lavage preparation 12 hr previously...

The symptoms of urgency, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort are exaggerated after a meal in inflammatory disorders of the colon, such as ulcerative colitis. The possible motor correlates of these symptoms were investigated in a model of acute colitis in six dogs. Each dog was instrumented with seven strain gauge transducers, two on the proximal, three on the middle, and two on the distal colon. After an overnight fast, 4-hour fasted recordings were made from the normal colon and after the colon had been cleansed on the previous day with Colyte (Reed & Carnrick, Piscataway, NJ)...

This study monitored high-amplitude propagated contractions (HAPCs) in ambulating subjects over a 24-h period using a new ambulatory recording system. Twelve healthy volunteers aged 34 +/- 5.96 yr participated. Approximately 12 h after a Colyte bowel prep, a small catheter (OD less than 3 mm), containing three solid-state pressure transducers spaced 5 cm apart, was positioned by flexible sigmoidoscope at 40-50 cm from the anal verge. A battery-operated data recorder sampled the pressure at each port at 1 Hz and stored the values on all ports if any port exceeded 75 mmHg...

A frequent complaint of patients asked to drink polyethylene glycol (PEG) colonic lavage solution is the salty flavor. This often results in failure to ingest the entire 4 liters of the solution and compromises bowel cleansing. The purpose of this study was to determine systematically whether the addition of a flavored drink mix sweetened with aspartame to the PEG lavage solution would improve palatability without significantly altering the osmolality of the solution. Eighty-seven (87) staff volunteers participated in a taste test of PEG lavage solutions containing varying amounts of commercially available drink mixes...

RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIAL

A prospective, randomized trial of inpatient vs. outpatient bowel preparation for elective colorectal surgery was performed in 100 consecutive patients. Bowel preparation was standardized for both groups and consisted of 4 liters of Colyte (Reed & Carnrick, Piscataway, NJ) and oral neomycin and Flagyl (G. D. Searle & Co., Skokie, IL) the day before surgery. Patients were randomized into four subcategories: ileocolostomy, colocolostomy, abdominal perineal resection, and other. Tap water enemas were administered on the morning of surgery to ensure and adequate mechanical preparation...

We investigated the effect of absorbable and nonabsorbable fluid perfusion and cleansing on colonic motor activity in eight intact conscious dogs. Each dog was instrumented with an indwelling catheter in the proximal colon and seven strain gauge transducers on the entire colon. After an overnight fast, a control recording was made for 3 h, followed by 3 h of perfusion and 3 additional h of postperfusion recording. Next day, a 3-h recording was made when the colon was empty. The colon exhibited normal migrating and nonmigrating motor complexes in the control uncleansed state...
