PURPOSE: This study assessed the pain associated with movement and exercise in older individuals with cognitive decline, using the Abbey Pain Scale (APS) to identify the sub-items that effectively reflect pain during such activities. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 225 older patients with musculoskeletal disorders and cognitive decline at the Ikeda Rehabilitation Hospital in Toyama, Japan. Pain during walking or transferring was assessed using the verbal rating scale (VRS) and the APS...

OBJECTIVE: To calibrate the 25 items from the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) patient-reported outcome measure (PROM), using item response theory (IRT), into 1 or more item banks, and assess reliability, validity, and administration efficiency of scores derived from computerized adaptive test (CAT) or short form (SF) administration modes. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Outpatient rehabilitation clinics. PARTICIPANTS: Patients (N=28,815; women=69%; mean age [SD]=60 [18]) included in a large national dataset and assessed for dizziness-related conditions who responded to all DHI items at intake...

OBJECTIVES: The Gambling Disorder Identification Test (GDIT) is a recently developed self-report measure. The GDIT includes items with multiple response options that are either based on frequency or time, and item response theory evaluations of these could yield vital knowledge on its measurement performance. METHODS: The GDIT was evaluated using Rasch analysis in a study involving 597 Swedish gamblers. RESULTS: In a three-dimensional Rasch model, the item response difficulty range extended from -1...

INTRODUCTION: The inclusion of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) in the fifth revision of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) by the American Psychiatric Association and Gaming Disorder in the 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) by the World Health Organization requires consistent psychological measures for reliable estimates. The current study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Gaming Disorder Test (GDT), the Ten-Item Internet Gaming Disorder Test (IGDT-10), and the Five-Item Gaming Disorder Test (GDT-5) and to compare the WHO and the APA frameworks of gaming disorder symptoms in terms of psychopathological symptoms, life satisfaction, and personality traits...

It is shown that the psychometric test reliability, based on any true-score model with randomly sampled items and uncorrelated errors, converges to 1 as the test length goes to infinity, with probability 1, assuming some general regularity conditions. The asymptotic rate of convergence is given by the Spearman-Brown formula, and for this it is not needed that the items are parallel, or latent unidimensional, or even finite dimensional. Simulations with the 2-parameter logistic item response theory model reveal that the reliability of short multidimensional tests can be positively biased, meaning that applying the Spearman-Brown formula in these cases would lead to overprediction of the reliability that results from lengthening a test...

The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS) is the most widely used measure of hopelessness, a key psychological construct linked with various mental health outcomes. In clinical settings, the BHS has proven a reliable tool for assessing hopelessness; however, there has been debate regarding the tool's internal consistency among non-clinical populations. Most studies assessing the dimensionality of the BHS have relied on the use of classical test theory (CTT). The length of the BHS has also prompted concerns over its practicality...

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder which is linked to many health risks. The gold standard to evaluate OSA in clinical trials is the Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI). However, it is time-consuming, costly, and disregards aspects such as quality of life. Therefore, it is of interest to use patient-reported outcomes like the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), which measures daytime sleepiness, as surrogate end points. We investigate the link between AHI and ESS, via item response theory (IRT) modeling. Through the developed IRT model it was identified that AHI and ESS are not correlated to any high degree and probably not measuring the same sleepiness construct...

BACKGROUND: To understand why some individuals who develop alcohol use disorders (AUD) first begin to drink heavily, a number of scales have been developed that index aspects of alcohol craving and restraint from drinking. We developed a new measure called the Alcohol Consumption Questionnaire (ACQ), based in part on items modified from scales used to index binge eating because there are data to suggest that binge eating and binge drinking may share common antecedents. We present an initial validity study using data from a sample of Mexican Americans...

This paper presents an empirical challenge to the assumption that an item-response theory analysis always yields a better measure of a clinical construct. We summarize results from two measurement development studies that showed that such an analysis lost important content reflecting the conceptual model ("conceptual validity"). The cost of parsimony may thus be too high. Conceptual models that form the foundation of QOL measurement reflect the patient's experience. This experience may include concepts and items that are psychometrically "redundant" but capture distinct features of the concept...

A sample of 177 teachers from southern Finland participated in the study, commencing with a startup session followed by an 8-day ESM period. Through twice-daily prompts, participants reported their immediate positive and negative affect as well as recent stressors encountered, such as workload and challenging social interactions...

The Multidimensional Forced Choice (MFC) test is frequently utilized in non-cognitive evaluations because of its effectiveness in reducing response bias commonly associated with the conventional Likert scale. Nonetheless, it is critical to recognize that the MFC test generates ipsative data, a type of measurement that has been criticized due to its limited applicability for comparing individuals. Multidimensional item response theory (MIRT) models have recently sparked renewed interest among academics and professionals...

The abbreviated measurement of coping strategies is useful for monitoring and identifying the effects of stress. The Coping strategy indicator-Short version (CSI-S, including the dimensions of seeking support, problem solving and avoidance strategies) is a new adaptation of the full version of this indicator, and additional evidence of its validity is needed. Psychology students (n = 125) from a public university in Lima, Peru, were recruited to help provide such evidence of validity in terms of internal structure, reliability and associations with other variables (perceived stress and general efficacy in cope with difficulties), which were evaluated using nonparametric item response theory procedures...

Witnessing degradation and loss to one's home environment can cause the negative emotional experience of solastalgia. Using data collected from three large, independent, adult samples (N = 4229), who were surveyed soon after the 2019/20 Australian bushfires, factor analyses confirmed the scale's unidimensionality, while analyses derived from Item Response Theory highlighted the poor psychometric performance and redundant content of specific items...
