BACKGROUND: It has been observed that patients with liver dysfunction need lower dose anesthetic compared patients with normal liver function. The minimum amount of volatile anesthetic to achieve an optimal depth of anesthesia for these patients is still unclear. In this study, Minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) of the sevoflurane was determined using an electric stimulation and the effect of severity of liver dysfunction on the MAC was observed in cirrhotic patients. METHODS: Thirty patients undergoing upper abdominal surgery were divided into the following groups: group N (normal liver function), group A (Child-Pugh grade A) and group B (Child-Pugh grade B-C)...

The previously reported bis(6-diphenylphosphinoacenaphth-5-yl)mercury (1) was used as ligand for the preparation of the copper(I) complexes, 1·CuCl and [1·Cu(NCMe)]BF4, which were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. DFT calculations employing topological analysis of the electron and electron pair densities within the AIM and ELI-D space-partitioning schemes revealed significant metallophilic Hg···Cu interactions. Evaluation of noncovalent bonding aspects according to the noncovalent interaction (NCI) index was applied not only for the Cu complexes 1·CuCl and [1·Cu(NCMe)]BF4 but also for the previously reported Ag and Au complexes, namely, [1·MCl] (M = Ag, Au) and [1·M(NCMe)n](+) (M = Ag, n = 2; M = Au, n = 0), and facilitated the assignment of attractive dispersive Hg···M interactions with the Hg···Cu contacts being comparable to the Hg···Ag but weaker than the Hg···Au interactions...

Impulsivity is associated with distinct mental disorders but is also considered as a personality trait exhibited by healthy individuals. Current studies suggest that early stressful life events might cause higher impulsivity in the adulthood. Morphological features, which reflect early brain development, could provide valuable information regarding the origin of impulsive behavior. However, none of the previous MRI studies employed a methodology specifically designed to investigate the relationship between impulsivity and markers of brain development...

Accumulating evidence has shown that chronic injection of d-galactose (d-gal) can mimic natural aging, with accompanying liver and brain injury. Oxidative stress and apoptosis play a vital role in the aging process. In this study, the antioxidant ability of polydatin (PD) was investigated using four established in vitro systems. An in vivo study was also conducted to investigate the possible protective effect of PD on d-gal-induced liver and brain damage. The results showed that PD had remarkable in vitro free radical scavenging activity on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH˙), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS(+)˙) radical ions, and hydroxyl and superoxide anions...

BACKGROUND Despite the high frequency of hypotension during spinal anesthesia with proper sedation, no previous report has compared the hemodynamic effects of dexmedetomidine and midazolam sedation during spinal anesthesia. We compared the effects of bispectral index (BIS)-guided intravenous sedation using midazolam or dexmedetomidine on hemodynamics and recovery profiles in patients who underwent spinal anesthesia. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and sixteen adult patients were randomly assigned to receive either midazolam (midazolam group; n=58) or dexmedetomidine (dexmedetomidine group; n=58) during spinal anesthesia...

Optical microscope is widely used real-time investigation tool, but usually suffers from low resolution due to Abbe diffraction limit. Herein, we design and successfully synthesize ZrO2/polymer hybrid colloidal microspheres with as high as 47.5 wt% inorganic nanoparticles by suspension polymerization of 9,9'-bis[4-(2-acryloyloxyethyloxy) phenyl] fluorene (BAEPF). Owing to the homogeneous dispersion, high density and high refractive index of inorganic nanoparticles and deformability of polymer, the obtained ZrO2/poly(BAEPF) hybrid colloidal microspheres have high refractive index, optical transparency and controllable curvature, and thus can be directly used as a hybrid solid immersion lens (hSIL) for optical microscope, achieving super-resolution imaging of 50 nm even 45 nm under a standard white light or blue light optical microscopes, which is far beyond the diffraction limit for visible light optical microscopes...

Magnetic resonance (MR) is currently used for diagnosis of osteosarcoma but not well even though contrast agents are administered. Here, we report a novel bone-targeted MR imaging contrast agent, Gd2-diethylenetriaminepentaacetate-bis(alendronate) (Gd2-DTPA-BA) for the diagnosis of osteosarcoma. It is the conjugate of a bone cell-seeking molecule (i.e., alendronate) and an MR imaging contrast agent (i.e., Gd-DTPA). Its physicochemical parameters were measured, including pKa, complex constant, and T1 relaxivity...

BACKGROUND: During awake craniotomy, the patient's language centers are identified by neurological testing requiring a fully awake and cooperative patient. Hence, anesthesia aims for an unconscious patient at the beginning and end of surgery but an awake and responsive patient in between. We investigated the plasma (Cplasma) and effect-site (Ceffect-site) propofol concentration as well as the related Bispectral Index (BIS) required for intraoperative return of consciousness and begin of neurological testing...

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Patients with chronic kidney disease treated by haemodialysis (HD) are at increased risk of sarcopenia. Bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) can be used to determine body composition, and is one of the several potential screening tools for sarcopenia. The newer generation of portable hand-held devices can be readily used in dialysis centres. The results from BIS devices using a two-compartmental model of body composition can be affected by hydration status and so ideally measurements should be made when patients are not overhydrated...

The depth of anesthesia (DoA) is a crucial feature in general anesthesia. Nowadays the DoA is usually evaluated by the bispectral index (BIS). According to the surgical procedure, different reference levels for the BIS may be clinically required. This can be achieved by the simultaneous administration of an analgesic (e.g. remifentanil) and an hypnotic (eg propofol). As a contribution to the effort of automating the processes of drug delivery in general anesthesia, in this paper, a positive state observer is designed for the implementation of a control scheme proposed for the automatic administration of propofol and of remifentanil, in order to track a desired level for the BIS...
