Many phosphorescent iridium complexes are potent candidates as photodynamic therapeutic agents. In this work, a series of mixed-ligand phosphorescent iridium complexes (Ir1: [Ir(L1)(bpy)Cl](PF6)2; Ir2: [Ir(L1)(ppy)Cl](PF6); Ir3: [Ir(L2)(bpy)Cl](PF6)2; Ir4: [Ir(L2)(ppy)Cl](PF6). L1 = 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine; bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine; L2 = 2,6-bis(1-methyl-benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine; ppy = 2-phenylpyridine) have been synthesized and characterized. These complexes display high luminescence quantum yields and long phosphorescence lifetimes...

Due to restrictions on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), market demand for alternative flame retardants is projected to increase, worldwide. Information regarding the environmental behavior of these compounds is limited. The present study involved field measurements of several alternative halogenated flame retardants (HFRs), along with PBDEs and legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in surface water, bottom sediments and suspended particulate matter (SPM) within a highly urbanized watershed in Singapore...

Three new guaiazulene alkaloids muriceidines A-C (1-3) and one new bis-sesquiterpene muriceidone A (4), were isolated from the South China Sea gorgonian Muriceides collaris. Muriceidines are the first examples structurally architected by guaiazulene coupling with an inner-salt Δ (1)-pipecolic acid via a unique sp(2) methine-bridged linkage, and the bis-sesquiterpene was comprised by a guaiazulene and a indene units linked through a unprecedented carbon-carbon σ-bond between the high steric bridgehead carbon C-10 of guaiazulene moiety and C-2' of indene moiety...

Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. The many complications presented by the current treatment - including high toxicity, high cost and parasite resistance - make the development of new therapeutic agents indispensable. The present study aims to evaluate the anti-Leishmania potential of new ruthenium(II) complexes, cis‑[Ru(II)(η(2)-O2CR)(dppm)2]PF6, with dppm=bis(diphenylphosphino)methane and R=4-butylbenzoate (bbato) 1, 4-(methylthio)benzoate (mtbato) 2 and 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoate (hmxbato) 3, in promastigote cytotoxicity and their effect on parasite-host interaction...

Carbon fibre reinforced flame-retarded bioepoxy composites were prepared from commercially available sorbitol polyglycidyl ether (SPE) cured with cycloaliphatic amine hardener. Samples containing 1, 2, and 3% phosphorus (P) were prepared using additive type flame retardants (FRs) resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and their combinations. The fire performance of the composites was investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 tests, and mass loss calorimetry. The effect of FRs on the glass transition temperature, and storage modulus was evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), while the mechanical performance was investigated by tensile, bending, and interlaminar shear measurements, as well as by Charpy impact test...

A UV-curable, flame-retardant monomer, DAPP (bis[di-acryloyloxyethyl]-p-tert-butyl-phenyl-phosphate), was synthesized based on BPDCP (4-tert-butylphenyl-dichloro phosphate) and HEA (2-hydroxy ethyl acrylate). DAPP was blended with regular bisphenol A epoxy acrylate (BAEA) in various ratios to yield various phosphorus contents. The TGA-IR (thermogravimetric analyzer interface with an infrared spectrometer) results demonstrate that compounding 30 mol % DAPP with BAEA significantly reduced the amount of released CO gas...

The design and synthesis of novel pH-responsive nanoantibiotics is an emerging research area to address the antibiotic resistance crisis. The purpose of this study was therefore to synthesize a new anionic gemini surfactant (AGS) that could result in the formulation of pH-responsive chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) to treat methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. The coupling of oleic acid with 2,2-dimethyl-5,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-dioxane and subsequent deprotection followed by a reaction with succinic anhydride and sodium bicarbonate yielded AGS...

The polymerization of a new polar diene-based monomer 2-(2-methylidenebut-3-enyl)furan (MBEF) without masking is achieved by using the bis(phosphino)carbazoleide-ligated yttrium (Y) alkyl complex upon the activation of [Ph3 C][B(C6 F5 )4 ]. Under mild conditions, the polymerizations under the monomer-to-Y ratios ranging from 100:1 to 500:1 perform fluently in high yields. The afforded polydienes bearing pendant terminal furan groups have high cis-1,4-regularity up to 98.6% and molecular weights close to the theoretic values and narrow polymer dispersity index(PDI) (1...

We report on the engineering of full thermally activated delayed fluorescence - based white organic light emitting diodes (W-OLEDs) composed of three emitters (2,7-bis(9,9-dimethyl-acridin-10-yl)-9,9-dimethylthioxanthene-S,S-dioxide (DDMA-TXO2), 2,7-bis(phenoxazin-10-yl)-9,9-dimethylthioxanthene-S,S-dioxide (DPO-TXO2) and 3,11-di(10H-phenoxazin-10-yl)dibenzo[a,j]phenazine (POZ-DBPHZ) in two different hosts. By controlling the device design through the study of the emission of DDMA-TXO2 and DPO-TXO2, the behaviour of POZ-DBPHZ in a device with more than one emitter, and the combination of the three materials, respectively, we show that external quantum efficiencies as high as 16% can be obtained for a structure with a correlated colour temperature close to warm white, together with colour rendering index close to 80...

For a decade, depth of anesthesia monitoring has become a reality in the operating room. It provides valuable help for managing anesthesia, especially for unstable patients. This might be particularly relevant during aeromedical evacuation. In this study, we aimed to assess the validity of the bispectral index (BIS) during long-range patient transportation aboard fixed-wing aircraft. BIS was recorded in 30 patients, 25 under anesthesia and 5 awake, during aeromedical evacuations performed by the French Air Force...

Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS) is a group of disorders characterized by prolonged reversible cerebral vasoconstriction, associated with acute-onset, severe, episodic "thunderclap" headaches with or without other neurologic clinical features. We describe the first reported case, to our knowledge, of a patient with RCVS who was managed under general anesthesia in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. A 67-year-old woman with a diagnosis of RCVS made 2 months earlier was scheduled to undergo surgical extraction of the mandibular right third molar...

Vanadium compounds are promising anti-diabetic agents. However, reducing the metal toxicity while keeping/improving the hypoglycemic effect is still a big challenge towards the success of anti-diabetic vanadium drugs. To improve the therapeutic potency using the anti-oxidative strategy, we synthesized new N,N-dimethylphenylenediamine (DMPD)-derivatized nitrilotriacetic acid vanadyl complexes ([VO(dmada)]). The in vitro biological evaluations revealed that the DMPD-derivatized complexes showed improved antioxidant capacity and lowered cytotoxicity on HK-2 cells than bis(maltolato)oxidovanadium (IV) (BMOV)...

INTRODUCTION: The nociceptive flexion reflex threshold (NFRT) is a promising tool to monitor analgesia during general anaesthesia. Clinical studies have shown that the NFRT allows to predict movement responses to painful stimuli under a combined anaesthetic regime of sedative and opioid agents. Experimental studies indicated that the NFRT is also able to predict such movement responses under an exclusively sedative regime like propofol mono-anaesthesia. Therefore, we performed this study to investigate the ability of the NFRT to predict movement responses to painful stimuli in patients during a clinical propofol mono-anaesthesia...

The brain noradrenaline (NA) system, particularly NA transporters (NAT), are thought to play an important role in modulating impulsive behavior. Impaired impulsivity is implicated in a variety of neuropsychiatric conditions; however, an in vivo link between central NAT availability and human impulsivity has not been shown. Using positron emission tomography (PET) and S,S-[(11)C]O-methylreboxetine (MRB), we tested whether NAT availability is associated with this basic behavioral trait based on the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11) in twenty healthy individuals (12 females, 33...
