The inhibition of gastric cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1) enzyme was believed to be the major cause of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)-induced gastric ulcer. Recent studies disproved this belief and showed that the gastric tissues vulnerability is not solely connected to COX-1 inhibition. This work aimed at exploring and rationalizing the differential analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of novel selective COX-1 inhibitors with improved gastric profile. Two novel series of 4,5-diarylthiazole and diarylimidazole were designed, synthesized in analogy to selective COX-1 inhibitors (mofezolac and FR122047) which lack gastric damaging effects...

BACKGROUND: Aedes mosquitoes in Taiwan mainly comprise Aedes albopictus and Ae. aegypti. However, the species contributing to autochthonous dengue spread and the extent at which it occurs remain unclear. Thus, in this study, we spatially analyzed real data to determine spatial features related to local dengue incidence and mosquito density, particularly that of Ae. albopictus and Ae. aegypti. METHODS: We used bivariate Moran's I statistic and geographically weighted regression (GWR) spatial methods to analyze the globally spatial dependence and locally regressed relationship between (1) imported dengue incidences and Breteau indices (BIs) of Ae...

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative awareness is a rarely occurring phenomenon. Obesity is considered as one of the factors increasing the probability of intraoperative awareness due to problems with the dosing of anaesthetics. In a randomized prospective study we compared bispectral index (BIS) recordings during propofol-based total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) and sevoflurane-based inhalation anaesthesia in morbidly obese patients as a sign of possible intraoperative awareness. METHODS: 120 morbidly obese patients were randomly allocated into two subgroups: TIVA or SEVO...

The previously reported bis(6-diphenylphosphinoacenaphth-5-yl)mercury (1) was used as ligand for the preparation of the copper(I) complexes, 1·CuCl and [1·Cu(NCMe)]BF4, which were characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. DFT calculations employing topological analysis of the electron and electron pair densities within the AIM and ELI-D space-partitioning schemes revealed significant metallophilic Hg···Cu interactions. Evaluation of noncovalent bonding aspects according to the noncovalent interaction (NCI) index was applied not only for the Cu complexes 1·CuCl and [1·Cu(NCMe)]BF4 but also for the previously reported Ag and Au complexes, namely, [1·MCl] (M = Ag, Au) and [1·M(NCMe)n](+) (M = Ag, n = 2; M = Au, n = 0), and facilitated the assignment of attractive dispersive Hg···M interactions with the Hg···Cu contacts being comparable to the Hg···Ag but weaker than the Hg···Au interactions...

Impulsivity is associated with distinct mental disorders but is also considered as a personality trait exhibited by healthy individuals. Current studies suggest that early stressful life events might cause higher impulsivity in the adulthood. Morphological features, which reflect early brain development, could provide valuable information regarding the origin of impulsive behavior. However, none of the previous MRI studies employed a methodology specifically designed to investigate the relationship between impulsivity and markers of brain development...

Accumulating evidence has shown that chronic injection of d-galactose (d-gal) can mimic natural aging, with accompanying liver and brain injury. Oxidative stress and apoptosis play a vital role in the aging process. In this study, the antioxidant ability of polydatin (PD) was investigated using four established in vitro systems. An in vivo study was also conducted to investigate the possible protective effect of PD on d-gal-induced liver and brain damage. The results showed that PD had remarkable in vitro free radical scavenging activity on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH˙), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzo-thiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS(+)˙) radical ions, and hydroxyl and superoxide anions...
