BACKGROUND: Patent omphalomesenteric duct is one of the birth defects included in the spectrum of vitelline duct abnormalities. It is a rare anomaly with estimated prevalence of 0.13-0.2% in the general population. The most common presentation of patent vitelline duct is yellowish or mucoid type umbilical discharge which is usually noted in neonatal age or infancy. The main stay of diagnosis is clinical and outcome is favorable as long as timely surgical correction is offered. Here we present a 2 years old male child who presented with ileal prolapse through patent vitelline duct which is an exceptional mode of presentation of this pathology...

Heterotopic brain tissue is rare and has not been reported. Our center made the first report. 4 years and 2 months old Girl presented with a cystic mass in the right adrenal gland 2 weeks after right upper abdominal pain. The operation was successful, and the diagnosis was confirmed by postoperative pathology. 6 months after the procedure, the incision healed well without recurrence. This case report has a detailed diagnosis and treatment process and satisfactory examination results. It can provide a reference for diagnosing and treating clinical HBT and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis and mistreatment...

Fetus-in-fetu (FIF) is a rare congenital anomaly in which a malformed parasitic twin develops within the body of a live fetus or child. Abdominal teratoma, a type of germ cell tumor, can be a great imaging mimicker of FIF and vice-versa, as they both can present as a heterogeneous mass with calcifications and a fat component. Radiological differentiation of these 2 entities should be made because of the difference in surgical planning and treatment options. Features such as visualization of distinct bony vertebral elements and encysted cystic components are the specific features of Fetus in fetu [1]...

This case report describes an 81-year-old male with Child-Pugh B chronic liver disease presenting with dyspnea and atypical precordial pain. Evaluation revealed a third-degree atrioventricular block, necessitating temporary pacemaker placement. Portable cardiac ultrasound identified an intracavitary mass in the right atrium. A triphasic abdominal CT scan unveiled a solid lesion in hepatic segments VII and VIII, displaying arterial phase enhancement and late-phase washout. The neoplastic lesion, measuring 9...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Prenatal exposure to air pollution is robustly associated with fetal growth restriction but the extent to which it is associated with postnatal growth and the risk of childhood obesity remains unknown. We examined the association of prenatal exposure to air pollution with offspring obesity related measures and evaluated the possible protective effect of maternal fruits and vegetables intake (FV). METHODS: We included 633 mother-child pairs from the Rhea pregnancy cohort in Crete, Greece...

INTRODUCTION: During the Covid-19 era, acute abdomen and mesenteric lymphadenopathy were encountered as frequent mimic of appendicitis. This phenomenon can further complicate the diagnosis of acute abdominal conditions, not solely due to bacterial or viral intestinal infections but also attributable to post-infectious acute inflammatory states resulting in either undertreatment of inflammatory conditions or unnecessary surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case study, we present the case of an 11-year-old female who initially presented with fever and right lower quadrant abdominal pain, raising concerns of appendicitis...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Foreign body ingestion leading to luminal obstruction in both the small and large bowels is rare, especially in children. The authors present a case of a 7-year-old patient who presented with a small bowel obstruction caused by an ingested radiolucent foreign body. The previous herniotomy surgery 1 year back led to initial diagnostic confusion, highlighting the need for a broad differential diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 7-year-old child with a history of herniotomy presented with symptoms of small bowel obstruction...

Liver cysts are common benign lesions with rare malignancy potential. Distinguishing between benign and malignant tumors within liver cysts is challenging. We present the case of a patient with a chronically expanding hematoma within a liver cyst that was resected under suspicion of liver cystadenocarcinoma. A 73-year-old female patient presented with elevated hepatobiliary enzyme levels, no viral hepatitis, elevated tumor marker levels, and preserved liver capacity (Child-Pugh grade A). Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a large cyst (>10 cm) occupying the right lobe and a 25-mm mass lesion with mixed echogenicity inside the cyst...

BACKGROUND: Liver masses are a cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Although the patterns and clinical-radiological characteristics of primary liver masses have been studied in developed countries, few studies have been conducted in developing countries. Studying the patterns of liver mass in children helps to improve the outcome of liver masses and to design preventive strategies if the identified risk factors are preventable. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted on children who met the inclusion criteria, using a self-administered structured questionnaire...

Stimulation of thermogenesis by inducing uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) expression in adipocytes is thought to promote weight loss by increasing energy expenditure, and it is postulated that the human newborn has thermogenic subcutaneous fat depots. However, it remains unclear whether a relevant number of UCP1-expressing (UCP1+ ) adipocytes exist in the early postnatal life. Here we studied the distribution of UCP1 and the expression of thermogenic genes in the subcutaneous adipose tissues of the human fetus, infant and child...

BACKGROUND: Congenital infantile fibrosarcoma (CIF) and congenital hemangioma (CH) have similarities on prenatal ultrasound and are rare. CASE SUMMARY: We report 3 cases of fetuses with superficial hypervascular tumors, confirmed by postnatal pathology as CIF (1 case) and CH (2 cases, including 1 in a twin fetus). In Case 1, a mass with a rich blood supply in the fetal axilla was discovered by prenatal ultrasound at 28+0 wk of gestation. The postpartum pathological diagnosis was CIF, the mass was surgically removed, and the prognosis of the child was good...
