Humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM) is often reported in cancers derived from the squamous epithelium; however, there are very few reports of HHM in patients with gallbladder cancer. We report a case of a parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP)-producing gallbladder cancer presenting with HHM. A 43-year-old woman presented with appetite loss, nausea, and brown-colored urine. Blood tests revealed that she had hypercalcemia, high serum bilirubin, and high serum parathyroid hormone. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a gallbladder tumor, liver metastasis, and bile duct obstruction caused by the gallbladder tumor in the hilar region...

A 69-year-old woman presented with a right clavicle pain. CT revealed a pathological fracture of the right clavicle, multiple osteolytic lesions, and a left cervical mass. 18F-FDG PET/CT demonstrated a marked FDG uptake in the cervical mass and osteolytic lesions indicative of metastatic parathyroid cancer. 99mTc-MIBI SPECT/CT revealed either faint or no uptake in the osteolytic lesions. However, a histopathological analysis after a parathyroidectomy and right clavicle biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of parathyroid cancer and the presence of benign brown tumors secondary to hyperparathyroidism...

BACKGROUND: Cancer survivors have increased risk of endocrine complications, but there is a lack of information on the occurrence of specific endocrinopathies at the population-level. METHODS: We used data from the California Cancer Registry (2006-2018) linked to statewide hospitalisation, emergency department, and ambulatory surgery databases. We estimated the cumulative incidence of and factors associated with endocrinopathies among adolescents and young adults (AYA, 15-39 years) who survived ≥2 years after diagnosis...

OBJECTIVE: Imaging studies in the setting of primary hyperparathyroidism are performed to rule out an ectopic parathyroid adenoma. Although rare, false-positive scans can cause confusion and possibly more extensive procedures. METHOD: A 68-year-old woman with parathyroid hormone-dependent hypercalcemia was found to have uptake in the left midclavicular area on the parathyroid scan with sestamibi. Retention of the isotope was considered a possibility, and the sestamibi scan was repeated after injecting the isotope in the right hand and this did not show uptake in the left midclavicular area...

In recent years, predictive methods for assessing the preservation of the parathyroid glands have been actively implemented. The article describes the first experience of evaluating the blood supply of the parathyroid glands by quantitative determination of the indocyanine green (ICG) accumulation index in real time in 6 patients before and after a thyroidectomy with central neck lymph node dissection for papillary thyroid cancer. Intraoperative fluorescent angiography was performed by using domestic equipment with a fluorescent module, as well as by using a domestic medication of ICG...

BACKGROUND: Risk of postoperative transient or permanent hypoparathyroidism represents one of the most common complications following total thyroidectomy. This risk increases if a cervical lymphadenectomy procedure must also be performed, as is usually the case in thyroid carcinoma patients. Parathyroid autofluorescence (AF) is a non-invasive method that aids intraoperative identification of parathyroid glands. METHODS: In this prospective study, 189 patients with papillary thyroid cancer who underwent total thyroidectomy with central neck dissection were included...

Immunotherapy has revolutionised the treatment of oncological patients, but its application in various endocrine tumours is rather limited and is mainly used when conventional therapies have failed. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been employed in progressive adrenocortical carcinoma, primarily utilizing the anti-PD-L1 agent pembrolizumab, obtaining overall response rates ranging between 14% and 23%. In contrast, the response rate in phaeochromocytoma/paraganglioma was substantially less at 9%, considering the small number of patients treated...

In hyperparathyroidism (hyperPTH), excessive amounts of PTH are secreted, interfering with calcium regulation in the body. Several drugs can control the disease's side effects, but none of them is an alternative treatment to surgery. Therefore, new drug candidates are necessary. In this study, three computationally repositioned drugs, DG 041, IMD 0354, and cucurbitacin I, are evaluated in an in vitro model of hyperPTH. First, we integrated publicly available transcriptomics datasets to propose drug candidates...

Hypoparathyroidism is the most frequent complication in thyroid surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of intraoperative parathyroid gland identification, using autofluorescence imaging, on the rate of post-operative (PO) hypoparathyroidism in thyroid cancer surgery. Patients undergoing total thyroidectomy with central neck dissection from 2018 to 2022 were included. A prospective cohort of 77 patients operated on using near-infrared autofluorescence (NIRAF+) with the Fluobeam® (Fluoptics, Grenoble, France) system was compared to a retrospective cohort of 94 patients (NIR-)...

The frequency of concurrent thyroid cancer in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) varies. While the pathological association between thyroid and parathyroid disorders is frequently noted, the co-occurrence of parathyroid adenoma and papillary thyroid cancer is exceptionally rare. Furthermore, an ectopic parathyroid adenoma in the retropharyngeal space is exceedingly rare. Therefore, anatomical variations through the utilization of relevant diagnostic tools play a crucial role in guiding decisions pertaining to clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, surgical interventions, and operative strategies for parathyroid tumors...

Background Primary hyperparathyroidism is an endocrinopathy associated with dysregulated calcium homeostasis. The most common etiology is a parathyroid adenoma most definitely managed via a parathyroidectomy. The two main surgical approaches include a minimally invasive parathyroidectomy (MIP) and open four-gland exploration (4-GE). MIP is the preferred operative strategy since it is associated with less postoperative complications. Accurate preoperative imaging is essential in informing the optimal approach to surgery...
