Electric Source Imaging (ESI) and Magnetic Source Imaging (MSI) of EEG and MEG signals are widely used to determine the origin of interictal epileptic discharges during the pre-surgical evaluation of patients with epilepsy. Epileptic discharges are detectable on EEG/MEG scalp recordings only when associated with a spatially extended cortical generator of several square centimeters, therefore it is essential to assess the ability of source localization methods to recover such spatial extent. In this study we evaluated two source localization methods that have been developed for localizing spatially extended sources using EEG/MEG data: coherent Maximum Entropy on the Mean (cMEM) and 4th order Extended Source Multiple Signal Classification (4-ExSo-MUSIC)...

Epilepsy is a network disease. The epileptic network usually involves spatially distributed brain regions. In this context, noninvasive M/EEG source connectivity is an emerging technique to identify functional brain networks at cortical level from noninvasive recordings. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the two key factors involved in EEG source connectivity processing: (i) the algorithm used in the solution of the EEG inverse problem and (ii) the method used in the estimation of the functional connectivity...

Distributed inverse solutions aim to realistically reconstruct the origin of interictal epileptic discharges (IEDs) from noninvasively recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals. Our aim was to compare the performance of different distributed inverse solutions in localizing IEDs: coherent maximum entropy on the mean (cMEM), hierarchical Bayesian implementations of independent identically distributed sources (IID, minimum norm prior) and spatially coherent sources (COH, spatial smoothness prior)...

Single suspended carbon nanowires (CNWs) integrated on carbon-MEMS (CMEMS) structures are fabricated by electrospinning of SU-8 photoresist followed by pyrolysis. These monolithic CNW-CMEMS structures enable fabrication of very high aspect ratio CNWs of predefined length. The CNWs thus fabricated display core-shell structures having a graphitic shell with a glassy carbon core. The electrical conductivity of these CNWs is increased by about 100% compared to glassy carbon as a result of enhanced graphitization...

A family of linear hexamer peptide ligands HWRGWV, HYFKFD and HFRRHL, initially identified for their affinity to the Fc portion of human immunoglobulin G (hIgG), also have potential for use in the purification of human immunoglobulins A (hIgA) and M (hIgM). HWRGWV demonstrated the strongest binding affinity to hIgM, followed by hIgA and hIgG respectively. The effects of N-terminal acetylation of the peptide, as well as elution buffer pH, on the chromatographic elution of human IgG, IgA and IgM from HWRGWV resins at various peptide densities (0...

CMEM model for calculating time based instantaneous emission from light duty diesel vehicle and its input parameters were introduced. On-board test data were used to validate the simulation results. The relative error of THC, CO, and NOx are 14.2%, 3.7% and 32.7%, respectively, while the correlation coefficients reach 0.73, 0.72 and 0.87. The instantaneous emissions of the light duty diesel vehicle simulated by CMEM model are strongly coherent with the transient driving cycle in Shanghai. The simulation of instantaneous emissions and fuel economy under the ECE-15 cycle, FTP cycle, Japan 10-15 cycle and the cycle of shanghai arterial road show that the instantaneous emissions decline with the increase of the vehicle speed, especially from 0-10 km x h(-1) to 10-20 km x h(-1)...

Core architecture and input parameters of CMEM model were introduced to simulation the second by second vehicle emission rate on real world by taking a light-duty diesel car as a case. On-board test data by a portable emission measurement system were then used to validate the simulation results. Test emission factors of CO, THC, NO(x) and CO2 were respectively 0.81, 0.61, 2.09, and 193 g x km(-1), while calculated emission factors were 0.75, 0.47, 2.47, and 212 g x km(-1). The correlation coefficients reached 0...

Chromatographic resins of a family of linear Fc-binding hexamer peptides (HWRGWV, HYFKFD, and HFRRHL) exhibited the ability to selectively adsorb and isolate human IgG (hIgG) from complete mammalian cell culture medium (cMEM). Among them, the HWRGWV resin with a peptide density of 0.08 mequiv./g of resin was able to purify hIgG from cMEM with both purity and yield as high as 95%, comparable to Protein A and A2P agarose gels. The influences of N-terminal acetylation of the HWRGWV resin, ligand density on the resin, initial hIgG concentration, and temperature on IgG isolation were also investigated...

Orthogonal experimental design has been applied to study the suitable cell culture medium and condition of conductive polypyrrole on rat keratinocyte cell cultures. The results showed that one thousand milliliters of complete minimum essential medium(CMEM) which contained 900 ml minimum essential medium(MEM), 10% fetal bovine serum(FBS), 1% NEAA, 6 ml insulin and 10 mg hydrocortisone was fit for keratinocyte cell culture. And the conductive polypyrrole obtained with 10 mA current density for 100 second switching times, given 100 mV electrical stimulation voltage for 2 hours, would stimulate the growth of rat keratinocyte cell in vitro cultures...

The aim of the two studies presented here was to produce and refine a measure of victim empathy for the assessment of child molesters. In the first study, 61 nonfamilial child molesters completed the Child Molester Empathy Measure (CMEM), a questionnaire designed specifically for this study. The measure assessed empathy in three contexts: (a) toward a child who was in a motor vehicle accident and was disfigured, (b) toward a child who had been sexually molested by an unknown assailant over a period of time, and (c) toward the offender's own victim(s)...

Long slender trypanosomes, isolated from infected mouse blood or from cryopreserved stabilates, respectively, were unable to grow in conditioned media (cMEM), prepared from the declining phase of axenic bloodstream form cultures. Additionally, mixtures of fresh medium and cMEM led to decreased growth rates and, in accordance to the amount of cMEM used, to a decreased S-adenosyl-L-methionine decarboxylase (Ado-MetDC; E.C. activity. Since addition of polyamines could not overcome the process of transition from dividing to non-dividing cells and the intracellular S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet), ornithine and putrescine concentrations seemed unaltered during the course of cultivation, we questioned if polyamine metabolism is involved in this transition process...

The culture of cutaneous keratinocytes grown on a Puropore nylon microporous membrane at the air-liquid interface has been shown to be similar to the epidermis in a number of molecular and morphologic characteristics but to exhibit a significantly greater degree of tritiated water permeation. Various culture conditions have been altered in an effort to improve the water barrier properties. A Kp value in the range of 5.5 +/- 1.6 x 10(3) has been obtained for 79% of the cultures a) by plating 0.9 x 10(6) viable basal cells on a piece (13-mm diameter) of membrane for 7 days of submerged growth, b) by placing two membranes on two stacked glass fiber filters (47-mm extra-thick) in a culture dish (60 mm) for 14 days of growth at the air-liquid interface, c) by replacing the growth medium, i...
