The consensus statement published by the German Society for Phoniatry and Paedaudiology in the year 2000 has been revised and actualized. The revised version takes into account current scientific and clinical findings. Aspects of the definition of auditory processing disorders (APD) are described extensively. These include symptoms, anamnestic information and diagnostic steps (preliminary examinations, subjective and objective audiological procedures). APD can appear in different forms, some of which can be classified within subtypes...

OBJECTIVE: Aim of the study was to assess the mean age at diagnosis of bilateral congenital hearing loss in the Audiology and Phoniatry Centre of the University of Turin, pointing out, by North-West Italy experience, the role of the newborn hearing screening in anticipating the age of diagnosis. METHODS: This was a retrospective study. Forty-six congenital deaf babies were reviewed and age at diagnosis was assessed for each, taking in consideration the role of hearing loss risk factors...

The aim of this publication was estimation of osteomeatal complex and its visualisation by means of CT in children having been treated conservatively and surgically because of sinusitis. There were analyzed 47 children age 4 to 18 years who had been treated in Dept. of Children Otolaryngology, Phoniatry and Audiology of Medical University in Lublin during 2001-2005. It was found, that the causes of sinusitis are disturbances of osteomeatal complex and that the frontal projection in CT investigation is more efficient in preoperative diagnostics than sagittal projection...

Signs and symptoms obtained by clinical examination and endoscopic observations in consecutive subjects presenting at our Phoniatry and Logopedics Service from 1998 to 2003 for swallowing disorders were reviewed and evaluated statistically. The predictive power of these parameters is discussed in terms of short-term complications of dysphagia (aspiration). Epidemiological considerations are made based on a statistical model.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective voice analysis represents a diagnostic tool in phoniatry and is a part of everyday practice if a phoniatrist has a "trained ear". MATERIAL AND METHODS: This clinical prospective study included a sample of 20 male patients with malignant tumors involving one vocal cord-right or left. All patients underwent otorhinolaryngological and phoniatric examinations. Subjective acoustic analysis was done when patients pronounced numbers from 1 to 10...

An important role of the surgical clinics of Warsaw Royal University (established in 1818) in the development of otolaryngology is also presented. Biophysics is the science comprising the sum of biophysical disciplines describing living systems. It also includes the biophysics of voice and speech. The latter deals with physiological acoustics, phonetics, phoniatry as well as logopaedics. In connection with the problems of voice and speech, including also their teaching problems, a common language is often being sought for appropriate to all the interested scientific branches. As a result of our efforts aimed at removing the existing barriers we have tried to set up a University Society for the Study of Voice and Speech...

With the help of an Analog to Digital Converter we are able to perform serial and statistical analysis in the time domain. The difficulty in those long-term period measurements consists in the correct extraction of the periodicity in human voice. A simple method is the electroglottography, which, however, is not applicable in all cases. The analysis of the acoustic wave (translated via microphone) demands a lot of electronics if to be precise. Our investigation consists of a compromise between precision and amount of instrumentation, and we only took one parameter as a criterion...
