BACKGROUND: The genus Mycobacterium includes well-known bacteria such as M. tuberculosis causing tuberculosis and M. leprae causing leprosy. Additionally, various species collectively termed non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) can cause infections in humans and animals, affecting individuals across all age groups and health conditions. However, information on NTM infection prevalence in Panama is limited. METHODS: This study conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical records from 2017 to 2021, specifically focusing on patients with NTM isolates...

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter related infections continue to be a major cause of morbidity and transfer to hemodialysis (HD) in PD patients. The treatment of tunnel infection (TI) could be challenging, especially when the infection involves the superficial cuff requiring the removal of the catheter. To spare the patient the loss of the catheter and the transfer to HD, several mini-invasive surgical techniques have been proposed as rescue therapy. Furthermore, nowadays, the rapid growth of digital technology has enormously increased the diagnostic sensibility of the echo signal allowing to accurately defines the extent of the infectious process along the PD catheter tunnel...

IMPORTANCE: Hemodialysis requires reliable vascular access to the patient's blood circulation, such as an arteriovenous access in the form of an autogenous arteriovenous fistula or nonautogenous arteriovenous graft. This Review addresses key issues associated with the construction and maintenance of hemodialysis arteriovenous access. OBSERVATIONS: All patients with kidney failure should have an individualized strategy (known as Patient Life-Plan, Access Needs, or PLAN) for kidney replacement therapy and dialysis access, including contingency plans for access failure...

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal dialysis is the preferred approach for kidney replacement therapy. A peritoneal-vaginal fistula is a rare complication associated with peritoneal dialysis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 69-year-old woman with a history of type two diabetes and systemic arterial hypertension for twenty years is scheduled to undergo the surgical placement of a Tenckoff catheter to begin renal replacement therapy. After having thirty dialysis sessions, she was discharged to continue therapy at home...

OBJECTIVE: Pyogenic cerebral ventriculitis (PCV) is a rare infectious entity characterized by a potent inflammatory reaction of the ventricular ependyma, which in most cases leads to death. We aim to present the technical note and protocol, based on our center's 10-year experience of the use of endoscopic ventricular lavage in pediatric patients with PCV and ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). METHODS: For this study, all pediatric patients (<16 years) with VP shunts and PCV who were treated with endoscopic ventricular lavage between January 2012 and January 2022 were included...

BACKGROUND: Peritonitis is the leading cause of peritoneal dialysis (PD) discontinuation. However, few data concern risk factors of peritonitis development and catheter removal caused by treatment failure in pediatric patients. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study analyzed data from pediatric patients who underwent chronic PD between March 2002 and June 2022. The incidence rates of peritonitis by the person-year method were calculated, and they were stratified by patient age groups...

INTRODUCTION: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is the method of choice for extra-renal replacement therapy (ERT) for children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), because of its various advantages. However, it presents different infectious and non-infectious complications, causes of important morbidity and mortality. AIM: To determine the mechanical complications of PD in our center and to identify risk factors of their occurrence. METHODS: We retrospectively collected the records of 99 patients who were treated with PD within the past eleven years in the department of pediatrics of the University Hospital Charles Nicolle of Tunis...

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: A history of prior abdominal procedures may influence the likelihood of referral for peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter insertion. To guide clinical decision making in this population, this study examined the association between prior abdominal procedures and outcomes in patients undergoing PD catheter insertion. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: Adults undergoing their first PD catheter insertion between November 1, 2011 and November 1, 2020, at 11 institutions in Canada and the US participating in the International Society for Peritoneal Dialysis (ISPD) North American Catheter Registry...

Green nail syndrome is an infectious nail disorder caused most commonly by Pseudomonas aeruginosa . We report a rare case of peritoneal dialysis (PD) exit site infection (ESI) accompanied by P. aeruginosa -associated green nail syndrome. The patient was treated with oral and topical antibiotics without the need for PD catheter removal. We aim to emphasise the importance of nail assessment for ESI in patients undergoing PD.

PURPOSE: Immediate-start peritoneal dialysis (PD) has emerged as a strategy for patients in need of urgent dialysis. However, the ideal timing for initiating this procedure remains uncertain. In this study, we aimed to compare complications and outcomes between immediate-start PD and conventional-start PD. METHODS: We performed a two-center retrospective cohort study between 1 January 2015 and 31 May 2020. Patients who underwent PD were divided into immediate-start PD (without break-in period) and conventional-start PD group (break-in period within at least 14 days)...

BACKGROUND: Prophylactic peritoneal dialysis (PD) in neonates undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is safe and improves outcomes. We sought to (1) derive the pre-operative characteristics of neonates who are most likely to benefit from PD after CPB and (2) validate a new prophylactic PD protocol based on our retrospective analysis. METHODS: First, we retrospectively evaluated neonates requiring cardiac surgery with CPB from October 2012 to June 2016. We categorized neonates as those who "needed PD" and those who "did not need PD" based on prior experience with neonates requiring kidney support therapy...

BACKGROUND: Immediate-start peritoneal dialysis (ISPD) is an effective renal replacement therapy that can prevent central venous catheterization due to its immediate initiation of peritoneal dialysis (PD) after catheter insertion without a break-in period. This study aimed to investigate the effect of ISPD on long-term patient survival. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center cohort study, 178 consecutive patients who started PD from August 2005 to March 2023 were enrolled, from whom 144 patients with ISPD were analyzed...

Introduction Fetal ventriculomegaly is one of the most commonly diagnosed central nervous system (CNS) pathologies of the second trimester occurring with a frequency of 0.3-0.5/1000 births. Severe fetal ventriculomegaly (SVM) may necessitate intrauterine intervention. Most such interventions have been made percutaneously with ultrasound guidance insertion of a pigtail catheter, which sadly often became obstructed or migrated. Case presentation Our case report presents the possibility of ventriculo-amniotic valve implantation (VAVI) by classic hysterotomy in isolated severe fetal hydrocephalus (IVSM) due to aqueductal stenosis...

Catheter-related tunnel infection may lead to peritonitis and discontinuation of performing high-quality peritoneal dialysis (PD). Tunnel infection is commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus . Gas-forming bacterial infection is rare in patients with PD and even exceedingly rare when such a infection spreads along the PD catheter tract. The first case of emphysematous PD catheter infection is presented here.
