PURPOSE: To develop an automated method for quantifying vitreous signal intensity on optical coherence tomography (OCT), with particular application for use in the assessment of vitreous inflammation. METHODS: This retrospective, observational case-control series comprised 30 patients (30 eyes), with vitreous haze secondary to intermediate, posterior, or panuveitis; 12 patients (12 eyes) with uveitis without evidence of vitreous haze; and 18 patients (18 eyes) without intraocular inflammation or vitreoretinal disease...

PURPOSE: To ascertain the effect of digitally induced large angle strabismus and its correction on social bias against strabismic adults. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This prospective, observational study included 10 orthotropic subjects whose face photographs were digitally altered to produce esotropia, exotropia, and hypertropia. Three batches of non-medical professionals, each consisting of 14 subjects, adjudged personality traits of the altered face photographs on a 10-item questionnaire...

Evidence-based medicine is a paradigm shift in the biomedical field toward scientific-based clinical practice. It is recognized as the process of acquiring and applying into practice the best available research findings in a defined filed. Although the roots of evidenced-based medicine date back more than 150 years, the modern evidenced-based medicine concept has been rapidly and constantly developing in the past two decades. Since its introduction, evidenced-based medicine has simultaneously attracted proponents and critics...

OBJECTIVE: We assessed in a retrospective unicenter study the impact of treatment with GnRH analogs (GnRHa) on adult height (AH), body mass index (BMI), bone mineral density (BMD), and reproductive function in girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP). PATIENTS: Eighty-seven ICPP patients were treated with GnRHa for 4.2 +/- 1.6 yr (range 3-7.9) and observed for 9.9 +/- 2.0 yr (range 4-10.6 yr) after discontinuation of treatment; to estimate the efficacy better, 32 comparable ICPP untreated girls were analyzed...

The plasma pharmacokinetics of alpha-dihydroergocryptine (DHEC, CAS 14271-05-7) were investigated in 24 patients with Parkinson disease after the administration of repeated oral doses of 40 mg DHEC twice daily by means of a novel 40 mg DHEC tablet (Almirid 40 mg test T) and an established 20 mg DHEC tablet (Almirid 20 mg - reference R). The trial was conducted according to a randomised, controlled, open, within-subject cross-over design; steady-state was established by means of a stepwise up-titration from 5 to 40 mg b...

BACKGROUND: Tricyclic antidepressants are structurally related to local anesthetics, suggesting that part of their analgesic action may result from properties shared with local anesthetics. Because local anesthetics block G protein-coupled receptor signaling (which explains, in part, their inflammatory modulating properties), the authors studied whether antidepressants have similar effects. METHODS: Peak Ca-activated Cl currents induced in Xenopus laevis oocytes by lysophosphatidic acid (10(-4) m) were measured using a voltage clamp...

Vascular anastomoses are invariably performed manually and may be difficult technically particularly in smaller calibre vessels. This may be even more pronounced when an emergency situation exists and a surgeon relatively inexperienced in vascular surgery has to deal with the problem. A technique is described allowing for rapid anastomosis of vessels ranging upwards from a diameter of 2.5 mm using incomplete adjustable metal rings. The technique is simple and can be applied by surgeons with minimal vascular training...

The paper shows the importance and role played by medicine in the orientation and solving of the adaptation processes of the individual at the working site and in modern life, under the conditions of variability and complexity of industrial development. Correct knowledge of work and of efficiency achieved provides the elements of a complete appreciation of the workers' adaptation, with the possibility of improving those conditions on which the formation of the dynamic stereotype depends. The efficiency parallels the training, being influenced by the adaptation of the respiratory and cardiovascular functions, elimination of useless movements during the working process and increase of muscular strength...
