BACKGROUND: In clinical fields, many types of insoles are used to not only realign movement patterns, but also treat pressure-related foot diseases. However, the characteristics of and plantar pressure in each type of insole are still unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to validate the plantar pressure-relieving effect of three representative types of insoles (metatarsal padding insole [MPI], lateral heel wedge insole [LHI], and arch support insole [ASI]) in asymptomatic men...

BACKGROUND: The foot support has been described as that of a tripod. Biomechanical studies often report on peak pressures and pressure time integrals under specific areas of the foot. Reference needs to be made to the normal tripod distribution especially in the forefoot. In the forefoot the ratio between the 1st metatarsal and the 5th metatarsal on the medial and lateral columns of the foot respectively provide an excellent reference especially if the normal ratio is known. This study provides conclusive evidence of the 1st to 5th metatarsal ratio for peak pressures and pressure time integrals in the normal foot to be used as a reference...

AIMS: Determine the prevalence and relative risk of having single and combinations of biomarkers of chronic kidney disease-mineral bone disorder (CKD-MBD) syndrome in the diabetic foot from an electronic medical record (EMR) review. METHODS: Review of 152 patients with one foot radiograph and diagnoses of both diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) stages 1-5. Presence/absence of peripheral neuropathy (PN), targeted serum markers, and both pedal vessel calcification (PVC) and buckling ratio (BR) of 2nd and 5th metatarsals from radiographs were recorded...

This research was conducted to define the typology of the peroneus tertius, which is considered to be a part of the musculus extensor digitorum muscle and plays a role in dorsiflexion and eversion of the foot. In addition, another aim of the study was to examine the relationship of the peroneus tertius with the extensor digitorum longus and to investigate the possible effects of the tendon/insertio properties of the peroneus tertius on the fifth metatarsal. In this study; classical anatomical dissection was performed on 30 lower limbs...

METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted at an academic medical center on patients who underwent 1st MTP arthrodesis during 2009-2021. In total, 136 patients (148 feet: HR=57, HV=47, combined=44) met the inclusion criteria of minimum three-month follow-up (mean=1.25 years, range=0.25-6.14 years). Forefoot pain, hallux valgus, shoe sore, flat foot, and calluses are among the common foot problems encountered by high heel wearers. This study aimed to investigate the external forces associated with shoe sore and callus while wearing formal heel shoes. The external force on the 1st , 2nd , and 5th metatarsal heads and heel center was measured using the ShokacChip. Women were asked to wear pumps with four heel heights (10, 30, 55, and 80 mm) and walk 15 m twice. Thirty-five women were included. The data of two participants were excluded due to sensor fault...

In this report, we discuss the successful management of delayed splenic rupture, presenting days after index injury, with no commonly associated injuries or blunt abdominal trauma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 50 year old male, not on anticoagulants, presented with blunt trauma after driving his motorcycle into a tree. The patient sustained right 3-5 rib fractures, displaced right midclavicular fracture, 25 % right pneumothorax, T5-9 posterior spinous process fractures, left 2nd-5th metatarsal fractures, and scattered abrasions to the left foot, knee and hand...

BACKGROUND: Trans-phalangeal and trans-metatarsal amputation, collectively termed 'minor amputations' are important procedures for managing infections of diabetes-related foot ulcers (DFU). Following minor amputation, international guidelines recommend a prolonged course of antibiotics if residual infected bone on intra-operative bone samples are identified, but the quality of the evidence underpinning these guidelines is low. In this study, we examined the concordance of microbiological results from proximal bone cultures compared to results from superficial wound swabs in relation to patient outcomes; with the aim of determining the utility of routinely obtaining marginal bone specimens...

Polydactyly is a common deformity of the limbs, and excision of the extra digit has shown good results in the vast majority of patients. However, this treatment approach may not suitable for all cases of polydactyly. Some complex surgical procedures are required to treat rare forms of polydactyly and achieve satisfactory correction. Here, we report the use of on-top plasty technique for treating polydactyly between the 4th and 5th metatarsals with concomitant angulation of the 5th metatarsophalangeal joint...

Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB) affection of foot appears to be a rare clinical entity and accounts for <10% and 0.1-0.3% of osteoarticular and extrapulmonary TB, respectively.
