OBJECTIVE: To assess efficacy and tolerability of semaglutide as a weight loss treatment for children living with comorbid obesity. DESIGN: Retrospective observational study of the first 50 children from a weight management service treated with semaglutide for at least 6 months. SETTING: A tertiary paediatric multidisciplinary weight management clinic in a UK hospital. PATIENTS: Aged 10-18 years old with a body mass index (BMI) SD score (SDS) >2 with a weight-related comorbidity (including insulin resistance (defined as homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance >4), type 2 diabetes, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnoea or hypertension)...

The present article describes the protocol of a mixed-methods study (an observational cohort design and focus groups), aimed to examine neuropsychological functioning and other biopsychosocial outcomes, therapeutic adherence and unmet care needs in paediatric population undergoing solid organ or allogeneic hematopoietic transplant during the pre- and post-transplant phases. Following a multi-method/multi-source approach, neuropsychological domains will be comprehensively measured with objective tests (SDMT, K-CPT 2/CPT 3, TAVECI/TAVEC, WISC-V/WAIS-IV Vocabulary and Digit Span subtests, Verbal Fluency tests, Stroop, ROCF, and TONI-4); ecological executive functioning, affective and behavioral domains, pain intensity/interference, sleep quality and therapeutic adherence will be assessed through questionnaires (parent/legal guardians-reported: BRIEF-2 and BASC-3; and self-reported: BASC-3, BPI, PROMIS, AIQ and SMAQ); and blood levels of prescribed drugs will be taken from each patient's medical history...

The objective of this study was to report outcomes of early cleft palate repair in infants born with Robin sequence (RS). A retrospective case series in a tertiary referral paediatric hospital was carried out, examining a consecutive series of 69 infants born with RS and cleft palate. A minimally invasive approach was taken to upper airway obstruction, with liberal nasopharyngeal airway (NPA) and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) use, guided by sleep studies. The palate was repaired between 6 and 9 months with a modified Malek technique...

BACKGROUND: Bruxism has a multifactorial etiology, including the influence of sleep characteristics and chronotypes. AIM: To identify the pathways that influence the occurrence of probable sleep bruxism (PSB) and probable awake bruxism (PAB) in adolescents. DESIGN: A total of 403 adolescents, aged 12-19 years, participated in the study. Parents/caregivers filled out a questionnaire about sociodemographic issues and the adolescent's health conditions, and the adolescents about sleep characteristics, occurrence of bruxism (based on previous study and the International Consensus of Bruxism), and chronotype (Circadian Energy Scale)...

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder affecting children. This study aims to characterize factors associated with the development and progression of severe forms of paediatric OSA. METHODS: This study included children admitted to Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, a tertiary children's hospital in southwest China between January 2020 and December 2020 with a discharge diagnosis of OSA. Each patient underwent polysomnography examination, following assessments of apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) and lowest oxygen saturation (LSaO2 ) by standardized techniques...

Paediatric sleep-disordered breathing is a common condition which varies in severity from snoring to obstructive sleep apnoea. Paediatric sleep-disordered breathing is usually diagnosed clinically, with investigations such as polysomnography reserved for more complex cases. Management can involve watching and waiting, medical or adjunct treatments and adenotonsillectomy. National working groups have sought to standardise the pathway for surgery and improve the management of surgical and anaesthetic complications...

Respiratory health in children is essential for general wellbeing and healthy development in the short and long term. It is well known that many respiratory diseases in adulthood have their origins in early life, and therefore research on prevention of respiratory diseases and management of children with respiratory diseases will benefit patients during the full life course. Scientific and clinical advances in the field of respiratory health are moving at a fast pace. This article summarises some of the highlights in paediatric respiratory medicine presented at the hybrid European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress 2023 which took place in Milan (Italy)...

Tongue mobility is an obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) marker and myofunctional therapy (MFT) target. For this reason, all paediatric patients with sleep-disordered breathing should require a combined functional assessment from an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist and a phonoaudiologist to confirm or rule out the presence of ankyloglossia. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a 13-year-old girl diagnosed with severe OSA and a significant decrease of 94% in her apnoea index (AI), requiring frenotomy with an immediate postoperative change in the tongue position...

This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of atypical deglutition (tongue thrust) in children diagnosed with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and to explore its associations, particularly in relation to the type of dentition (mixed or permanent). The study was conducted over a 5 year period at a paediatric hospital in Paris, France. Children aged 6-18 years with moderate to severe OSAS (apnea-hypopnea index ≥5/h) underwent a comprehensive evaluation, including the recording of demographic data, symptoms of snoring and breathing issues, and otolaryngology examination...

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep disordered breathing (SDB) is prevalent in patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and possibly reduced by disease modifying treatment (DMT) such as nusinersen. We hypothesized that some obstructive events may in fact be pseudo-obstructive, reflecting the imbalance of chest wall weakness with preserved diaphragmatic function, rather than true upper airway obstruction. If confirmed, these events could represent SMA-specific outcome measures. We aimed to report on the pattern observed in respiratory polygraphies (PG) in paediatric patients with SMA type 2 resembling obstructive SDB...
