PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs; age 18-39 years) with cancer report needing support with health insurance. We conducted a pilot randomized controlled trial to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a virtual health insurance navigation intervention (HIAYA CHAT) to improve health insurance literacy (HIL), awareness of Affordable Care Act (ACA) protections, financial toxicity, and stress. MATERIALS AND METHODS: HIAYA CHAT is a four-session navigator delivered program; it includes psychoeducation on insurance, navigating one's plan, insurance-related laws, and managing costs...

PURPOSE: Anxiety is a mental state characterized by an intense sense of tension, worry, or apprehension relative to something adverse that might happen in the future. Anxiety is a known comorbidity in cough patients, yet its prevalence among those with chronic refractory cough (CRC) is unknown. Anxiety is not typically assessed during evaluation for CRC, but treatments for CRC such as neuromodulators and behavioral cough suppression therapy (BCST) may potentially attenuate anxiety. This preliminary study investigates the potential prevalence of anxiety in CRC and its possible role in treatment outcomes...

INTRODUCTION: The US is currently experiencing a maternal health crisis. Maternal morbidity and mortality in the US are higher than in other developed nations and continue to rise. Infant mortality, likewise, is higher in the US than in other developed nations. Limited availability of maternal health services, particularly in rural areas, contributes to this crisis. Maternal health outcomes are poorer, and maternal care workforce shortages are more severe in rural areas of the US. In rural areas where obstetric specialists are rare, many patients rely on family medicine physicians for maternity care...

BACKGROUND: The neurobehavioral disorder, known as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is characterized by impulsivity, hyperactivity, and a lack of focus. In addition, it is connected to poor academic performance. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of ADHD and its effect on their academic performance among medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted among medical students of four medical colleges during December 2021 and April 2022...

We aimed to explore if psychostimulant use among student could be linked to attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms using a self-administered questionnaire sent by email to French students in 2021. Participants were asked about their psychostimulant use and the presence of ADHD symptoms using the Wender Utah Rating Scale and the Adult Self-Report Scale. Among the 4431 respondents, the prevalence of psychostimulant use was concerning and significantly associated with ADHD symptoms. This association could be related to undiagnosed ADHD or to psychobehavioral impairments induced by psychostimulant use underlining the need of ADHD screening and targeted prevention measures...

BACKGROUND: Rates of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are increasing in people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). Providers treating VTE in PwCF have reported low confidence concerning anticoagulant drug selection, dose, duration, and drug-drug interactions. As there are currently no published reports regarding management of VTE in PwCF, our objective was to describe the management of VTE in PwCF. METHODS: PwCF and VTE at the University of Utah Health were identified through electronic medical record searches...

INTRODUCTION: Zero Suicide is a strategic framework designed to transform a healthcare system's suicide prevention activities. In 2020, University of Utah Health launched a Zero Suicide program and Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM) training for its employees. In 2022, the healthcare system surveyed its workforce's attitudes toward suicide prevention and CALM. We sought to evaluate employees' attitudes and behaviors toward suicide prevention and CALM training following the launch of the Zero Suicide program...

OBJECTIVES: Telesimulation utilizes telecommunication technology to engage learners in simulation while in different physical locations. Despite this potential advantage, understanding of the student experience and assessment of student learning in telesimulation activities is limited. This study evaluates medical student emotional experience and self-identified learning in telesimulation through the Kolb experiential learning framework and qualitative analysis. METHODS: Fourth-year medical students enrolled in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine at the University of Utah participated in 3 telesimulation activities as part of a required internal medicine course...

INTRODUCTION: Over 40% of US adults meet criteria for obesity, a major risk factor for chronic disease. Obesity disproportionately impacts populations that have been historically marginalised (eg, low socioeconomic status, rural, some racial/ethnic minority groups). Evidence-based interventions (EBIs) for weight management exist but reach less than 3% of eligible individuals. The aims of this pilot randomised controlled trial are to evaluate feasibility and acceptability of dissemination strategies designed to increase reach of EBIs for weight management...

INTRODUCTION: Headache is a common chief complaint of children presenting to emergency departments (EDs). Approximately 0.5%-1% will have emergent intracranial abnormalities (EIAs) such as brain tumours or strokes. However, more than one-third undergo emergent neuroimaging in the ED, resulting in a large number of children unnecessarily exposed to radiation. The overuse of neuroimaging in children with headaches in the ED is driven by clinician concern for life-threatening EIAs and lack of clarity regarding which clinical characteristics accurately identify children with EIAs...

John Robert Ward was one of the early academic rheumatologists in the United States. He was the founding father of rheumatology in the Intermountain West, the first Chief of the Division of Rheumatology in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Utah. Dr Ward became a national leader in the understanding and treatment of rheumatic disease. His foundational work established gold-standard techniques for the successful investigation of anti-rheumatic drugs. His leadership and scientific contributions clearly qualify him as a "giant in rheumatology...

PURPOSE: The data resulting from epilepsy surgical evaluation are occasionally unclear in cases of mesial temporal lobe (MTL) epilepsy. BACKGROUND: Severe forms of depression have been linked to hyperactivity of the subcallosal cingulate cortex. The ability to stimulate the subcallosal cingulate cortex or associated circuits noninvasively and directly would maximize the number of patients who could receive treatment. To this end, we have developed an ultrasound-based device for effective noninvasive modulation of deep brain circuits. Here we describe an application of this tool to an individual with treatment-resistant depression...

BACKGROUND: The American Thoracic Society Guidelines recommend vancomycin as first line option for treatment of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Two studies have described the pharmacokinetics (PK) of intermittent intravenous (IV) vancomycin in adult people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). Currently, there have not been any studies describing the PK of continuous infusion vancomycin in PwCF. Our study aimed to describe the PK of continuous infusion vancomycin in adult PwCF.
