Objective: To compare the application of endoscope and microscope in all kinds of stapes surgeries. Methods: Fifty-nine stapes surgeries have been collected from April 2020 to May 2023 in Senior Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Chinese PLA General Hospital, Chinese PLA Medical School. Hearing level, hospital stay post-operation, times of hospital visit post-operation, etc. have been compared between the endoscopic group and microscopic group. Patients who were failed to place the stapes prosthesis because of the poor exposure of the oval window have been analyzed...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of piston diameter in patients undergoing primary stapes surgery on audiometric results and postoperative complications. METHODS: A retrospective single-center cohort study was performed. Adult patients who underwent primary stapes surgery between January 2013 and April 2022 and received a 0.4-mm-diameter piston or a 0.6-mm-diameter piston were included. The primary and secondary outcomes were pre- and postoperative pure-tone audiometry, pre- and postoperative speech audiometry, postoperative complications, intraoperative anatomical difficulties, and the need for revision stapes surgery...

OBJECTIVE: Middle ear surgery involves reconstruction of the ossicular chain, predominately using rigid implants. New middle ear prostheses strive to mimic the physiologic micromovements of the ossicular chain and prevent dislocation, protrusion, and preloading of the annular ligament due to pressure fluctuations. METHODS: Thirty-five patients were included in a monocentric, prospective observational study. Patients received tympanoplasty with ossicular reconstruction using the mCLIP ARC partial prosthesis...

OBJECTIVE: Placing a middle ear prosthesis is considered a key competency for the general otolaryngologist, but surgeons struggle to obtain and maintain this skill. The current study aims to characterize pre-coronavirus disease 2019 trends in stapedectomy and ossiculoplasty. STUDY DESIGN: Database review. SETTING: Tricare beneficiaries are treated at civilian and military facilities. METHODS: The Department of Defense beneficiary population of more than nine million persons per year was reviewed for patients undergoing either stapedectomy or ossiculoplasty between 2010 and 2019, identified by the current procedural terminology code...

This study investigates the performance of personalised middle ear prostheses under static pressure through a combined approach of numerical analysis and experimental validation. The sound transmission performances of both normal and reconstructed middle ears undergo changes under high positive or negative pressure within the middle ear cavity. This pressure fluctuation has the potential to result in prosthesis displacement/extrusion in patients. To optimise the design of middle ear prostheses, it is crucial to consider various factors, including the condition of the middle ear cavity in which the prosthesis is placed...

METHODS: Retrospective observational study, which included patients treated with primary stapes surgery performed between January 2009 and January 2020. Three audiometric measurements (PTA, GAP and SDS) were evaluated as main results, evaluated by analysis of covariance (controlling the preoperative value). Intraoperative and postoperative complications were also analyzed...

Congenital cholesteatoma accounts for 25% of cholesteatoma cases in children. Transcanal Endoscopic Ear Surgery (TEES) is ideal for these patients because it offers a wide endoscopic view of the middle ear and a minimally invasive approach. The two main limitations are the loss of one operative hand and a narrow external auditory canal in younger children. Here, we present the case of a 3-year-old patient with a Potsic stage III congenital cholesteatoma adherent to the incus and branches of the stapes. A robotic-assisted TEES procedure was performed, during which a robotic arm with 6 degrees of freedom held a 0°, 2...

PURPOSE: Otosclerosis is a common ear disease causing ankylosis of the stapedio-vestibular joint and conductive hearing loss. Stapedoplasty is the most advisable surgical solution. The restoration of hearing depends on the condition of the patient and the surgery itself. The aim of our work was to compare the surgical and audiological results of stapedoplasty performed with endoscopic versus microscopic technique. METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 254 patients treated with stapedoplasty with a microscopic approach (91/254) or with an endoscopic approach (163/254) between 2014 and 2021 at our tertiary referral center...

The Chaoyangopteridae is a clade of azhdarchoid pterosaurs that stands out in China, particularly in the Jehol Biota, as a Cretaceous group of medium-sized and high-crested pterosaurs. Herein, we describe a new species, Meilifeilong youhao gen. et sp. nov., based on two specimens, one tentatively referred to this taxon. This new species represents the most complete and well-preserved chaoyangopterid recorded to date. Along with a set of characters (low premaxillary crest above the nasoantorbital fenestra extending posteriorly, posterior premaxillary process arched and curving posteriorly, a slightly convex sternal articulation surface of coracoid, and a fibular shaft close to proximal articulation strongly arched posteriorly), this species also provides new information both on the unknown palatal region of this clade, and on the rarely preserved (in place) ear portion with stapes...

BACKGROUND: Variations along the facial nerve (FN) course present considerable challenges in the surgical treatment of otosclerosis, often complicating the procedure. Existing knowledge of its tympanic tract and its implications primarily comes from microscopical procedures. This study aims to assess endoscopic findings of FN anatomy in a healthy tympanic cavity and its impact on the stapedotomy procedure, focusing on the risk of complications and functional hearing outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective study on exclusive endoscopic stapedotoplasties between October 2014 and October 2021 at our Otorhinolaryngology University Department was carried out...

Background: For patients with severe tympanic adhesion, reconstructing the tympanic air cavity is often challenging, resulting in poor hearing reconstruction outcomes. Therefore, establishing a sound conduction pathway independent of the tympanic air cavity may be a viable method for reconstructing hearing in these patients. Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of sound conduction independent of the tympanic air cavity (i.e., replacing the original cavity with a tympanic vibrating material) using finite element analysis...

Congenital agenesis of the stapes and the oval window is rare. Congenital stapedial agenesis (CSA) may be recognized preoperatively in the presence of conductive hearing loss. The principal radiological imaging approach of the temporal bone, computed tomography (CT), can be used to diagnose CSA. Our 17-year-old male patient (case A) had long-term hearing loss which was getting worse. A temporal bone CT scan revealed the absence of the stapes and the oval window on both sides and an abnormal position of the facial nerve...

It is important to know the morphometry of the auditory ossicles for middle ear surgical applications. The present study aims to investigate the morphometric measurements of sheep auditory ossicles and the relationship between these ossicles. In this study, 100 malleus, incus and stapes of 50 Akkaraman sheep were examined using at trinocular stereo microscope and a total of 19 morphometric measurements were taken. The mean values of the morphometric measurements were obtained, and correlation analysis was performed between each part of each auditory ossicle...
